The actor who plays the firearms cop you seemed to recognise is Sean Pertwee. He played Alfred Pennyworth in the US series Gotham and was in the UK horror film Dog Soldiers, among many other film and TV appearances. His father was the much loved British actor Jon Pertwee who played Doctor Who in the 1970s and who was such a large part of my childhood.

That was fab. 😂 ♥ 2:18 I have that exact pic of AP in a coaster that I made. 🙂 My wife left me soon afterwards. 😃 Back of the net! ⚽ Glad you enjoyed this. I do hope you try a full episode of one of Partridge's series, the tv stuff is far superior to the film - though I did enjoy the film. I'd highly recommend; 'Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge' (1994) is excellent. In this Alan is a rising star and has his own chat show but he is a very tactless and inept presenter and is often extremely rude to his guests. 30 min episodes. 'I'm Alan Partridge' (1997 + 2002) is outstanding. After killing a man live on air, Alan's career has taken a sharp decline. His wife has left him. And he now lives in a travel tavern near a motorway, he desperately tries to get his career back on track with the help of his assistant Lynn. But makes no attempt to get his wife back (she's a fat cow). 30 min episodes.

They are all different because of the teams of writers involved. Earlier Partrdge involved Armando Iannucci, Peter Baynham, Stewart Lee and Richard Herring. Later ones were with Rob and Lee Gibbons and so there are subtle but noticeable differences.

To get even more context about Alan, you should delve into KMKY (Knowing Me Knowing You). It was first a radio series then a TV series, a chat show but was cut short due to 'an incident' in the very last episode. Very, very funny. Both were well before the TV series I'm Alan Partridge. Even before KMKY he appeared regularly on The Day Today... it's certainly part of his story, and it was a great programme (a satire on news hosted by Chris Morris and created by Morris and Armando Iannucci, tonnes of other content to get into from both of them...Iannucci also co created and wrote KMKY) but there's little need to go back that far, I'd recommend KMKY.

I always felt that this didn't escalate as much as the Simon Pegg trilogy, but should have done. Steve Cougan should have called Pegg up. "We're just not there with the third act yet, old chap. You did the zombie thing, so what should we do with this one, old mate?" Pegg: "My advice, old chap, is to fuck the budget and go nuclear as soon as possible. It's the only way." If Alpha Papa had somehow found a way to include a nuclear war sub plot, it would have been appropriate and I would have enjoyed it much more. I Pegg had written it, and Edgar Wright had directed, the nuclear war plot for Alpha Papa would have been the start point. But Cougan thinks he's so much better than literally everyone else in his industry. So this is what we got. Funny in parts, but mostly weak. A real missed opportunity for a top class farce.

You don't need to go all the way back to The Day Today but you'd perhaps need to start at Knowing Me Knowing You because Alan's character and current situation/predicament in I'm Alan Partridge needs context/back story. I would imagine a lot of the jokes and Alan's nuances in the movie would be lost on any 'Alan virgins' watching.
