I think it’s important to recognize how deep Levi’s character is, he looks stoic and unbothered but he’s easily one of the most emotional in the show. He doesn’t want people to die more than anyone probably that’s why he says to them “if I can’t do it, drop it” he knows he’s the strongest and it burdens him because he has to watch people die. I love his and Erwin’s dynamic, Levi understands that Erwin can see things that he can’t and trusts him completely, for me, he’s the definition of a true soldier

When you realize why Levi manages to hold it all in during emotional realizations. Because he already lost those most important to him, that he viewed as family. The closest we might've gotten was Petra, and although his squad is important to him, he's already cried all his tears long before we were introduced to him.

The thing with "aniki", there aren't many different ways of saying "brother" in English, but in Japanese there are so many ways to say "brother" and you can understand the relationship between them just by hearing how they say the word "brother". In this example, Isabel looking up to Levi with full respect; when it is translated as just "bro" you can't see that relationship, thinking they are equal but they definetely not. And that's why I support the idea of explaining the word the first time we hear, but leaving in the subtitles as it is as "aniki". I support the same idea for "-san, -sama, -kun, -chan, -dono" honorifics which tells a lot without explaining the relationship in details.

Fun fact: In the manga, it was Levi the one who found Isabel as a small child, half dead from hunger, and basically adopted her. It was only shown for a second but I think it's so in character for Levi, especially after what we find out about him in season 3.

This is a good choice; gives some world-building and character back-story without spoiling the major plot line of the show. ETA: I'd skip all three of the "Lost Girls" trilogy of OVAs (two-part "Wall Sina, Goodbye" and "Cruel World") as well as "Ilse's Notebook" because of possible spoilers; at least get S2 behind you before you check them out. ETA again: I think "3-D Maneuver Gear" and "Omni-Directional Maneuver Gear" (or just ODM Gear) are just two ways of saying the same thing.

I have no regrets watching this OVA because I learnt a lot about Levi as character, he is such a well-written character. As a manga reader I completely satisfied with his character, how he started his journey till the end, afterall he is an awesome character not only because of his strength (he is humanity strongest soldier) but also because of his personality (he always cares about his comrades and always thinks that each comrade's life is valuable). The expedition with Eren and others is the 57th expedition and Levi’s first expedition with Erwin was the 23rd expedition. If in 1 year, they have 4 expedition (based on what I heard they have around 3 - 4 expedition in a year, then we have around 8 - 11 years gap between the current expedition and this OVA expedition. That means Levi has been around with Erwin, Hange and Miche for quite a long time, so it is understandable that he got quite a higher rank as a Squad Captain. In the current episodes , I heard that Levi is currently in his early thirties, so in this OVA, Levi was still in his early twenties, he just doesn’t age, our short king looks almost the same, maybe because he is a cleanfreak, he has a good daily skincare that makes him always look young. I love the subtal hints to levis demeanor in the normal show after his squad got killed by Annie. Levi shows his rage in this OVA. He's very vocally and visually pissed and his eyes change to have a glint of red. In the fight with Annie, it's subtle, but he also has that glint of red. He's been through so much after so many years in the Scouts that he can hide his visual rage... but his eyes can't hide the red glint, the pain of losing more close comrades. This show is all about details, damn i love it!

Isabel calls Levi "aniki" which basically means "big brother". In a lot of other languages we don't just call them by their names, we have an honorific and that includes Japanese.

In manga they actually show how both Isabelle and Farlan died. I don't remember the details but they sure did put up a fight against a group of titans. Sadly Isabelle died first and at her last moment she was calling her brother Levi. It's really doesn't surprise me that they die considering it was their first expedition, they're surrounded by fog and it wasn't just one or two normal titans. The reason this titan killed so many people is because of it movements. You can see the difference between this titan and others. It was clearly an abnormal (an aberrant) because it was moving unfamiliar, unlike others. It was also moving a lot like wild animal, like a predator and it was fast too

I don’t know if anyone explained to you guys what a OVA is, so here it is OVA’s used to be like pilot episodes or concept episodes that would be sold as dvd’s or vhs, if they were sold enough studios would work on the show that would either air on television or be made into more ovas, over time the role of OVA changed as the pipeline for anime production changed so they became a tool to give fans bonus episodes or snippets often bundled with exclusive manga copies or sold separately. OVA full form is original video animation, it’s name easily tells you it was what it was originally intended for but now it’s a dying format since dvd and Blu-ray are not that popular anymore. It’s only done out of tradition now, hopefully they find a way to make more ovas and sell them as it usually gives a studios a better pay than a tv production, meaning better pay for the hard working animators.

Not a spoiler... Never forget Erwin standing up to Levi right there at the end, giving him purpose, telling him to continue moving forward. It's very important to remember for a key plot point in the future of Levi's arc, and is key to his and Erwin's relationship.

I love the parallels here between these episodes and the episodes with Eren and Levi Squad in the forest. I think that the more we learn about Levi the more similar we find he is to Eren, which helps us understand what exactly he saw in him in that cell all those episodes ago, why he decided to take him under his wing, and what Eren has the potential to become with the right guidance. We now understand why Levi said what he said to Eren in the forest, that he has an ability unlike anyone else and he needs to decide whether to put his faith in himself or those around him - whichever outcome he would regret the least. Levi is a devout follower of Erwin at this point and has placed all his trust in Erwin's plan, so one would assume he wouldn't say something that would seemingly give Eren the go ahead to act against that plan, but he has been in those shoes before. Probably a hundred times over. Sure, he doesn't have a special titan ability like Eren that could single-handedly turn the tide of battle, but he does have skill no one else can rival and this is a choice he has seen both sides of many times. He knows that if Erwin’s plan fails it could (and probably would) mean the death of his entire squad, but he has placed his trust in Erwin anyway. He has made his choice. Eren is new, he doesn’t have the experience to understand the weight of what is happening. Sure, he wanted to follow Erwin when joining the Survey Corps, but in the end Eren being in the Survey Corps was something that was forced upon him, and not a choice he made. Levi is all too aware of this, he went through the same thing. Levi knows the respect Eren has for him and how easy it would be to tell him to shut up and do the mission, and yet he lays the situation out for Eren anyway and leaves the final call of what to do to Eren himself. It speaks volumes about Levi’s character, and about how he sees those around him as people, and not just soldiers the way Erwin does. And in the end when it all goes wrong and Eren’s choice leads to the death of his squad, he doesn’t hold it against him. He doesn’t blame him. After all, no one knows what the outcome will be. “Become a monster to defeat the monsters.” Is a theme brought up through the 2nd half of s1, and is very interesting to look at alongside Levi’s character. At first it’s easy to assume that is what Levi has done. He comes across as cold, he has the power to do whatever he wants to do, the way people talk about him like he is some untouchable being on a different level to anyone else, it’s very easy to fit him into that kind of character archetype. But as we get to know him it very quickly becomes apparent this is not the case. He’s just a small guy who likes tea and poop jokes, appreciates the beauty in a clean space, is cold to cold people and kind to kind people. He continues to let people into his life despite knowing that in this cruel world he will probably outlive them all. He butts heads with Erwin about the lives lost in his plans, and whether the price of victory is worth paying at times. When a soldier lets his emotions take over and he endangers the trip home to retrieve his dead friend, Levi’s first reaction is to console him the way he knows how. The same way he does with Eren. He doesn’t blame him, he doesn’t have a go at him even if he deserves it, he simply understands. Jean’s response to Armin in episode 25: “Even if (Eren) became a monster and got rid of all the titans, would that really be a victory for humanity?” paired with Levi’s character paints a solid picture of one of the many themes of the show. After everything Levi has been through, he never once stopped being human. Sure, if he was more like the cold person people assume he is in the beginning maybe things would be different. Maybe people like Isabel and Farlan would still be alive if he hadn’t caved and let them come on the expedition. But we don’t even know if that is true, and that's not the kind of person Levi wants to be. It’s easy to assume the title “Humanity’s Strongest" refers only to Levi’s skill, and for most people in universe that is all it’s meant to be. But when taking his whole character into account it is very easy to see what Isayama actually means by true strength, not his skill with a sword but his heart. Levi has a lot of fans, understandably so - he’s good looking and badass and his sense of humour especially in his scenes with characters like Hanji is quite funny. And don’t get me wrong - liking him for those reasons is completely valid, but there is so much more to this man I feel goes overlooked sometimes, things that make him one of my favorite characters in all fiction. There are so many layers to peel back and examine and this was just season 1, there is so much more I could talk about his depth is crazy. Okay yapping session over. TLDR: Levi is the goat and I love AoT.

I just realized something, and I can't believe I didn't at first. The dynamic with Levi's group directly mirror's the dynamic and also mission of another trio. IYKYK

Fun fact, the leader of the survey corps in these (the guy Erwin was talking to in the carriage) is the same guy who screamed about how they accomplished nothing yet in episode 1 when they brought out the arm. He is also the same guy who trained them in the cadets (the guy Sasha offered "half" of the potato to). :)

One thing I would've liked to see them add to the ova is the scene where the three of them meet Hange. Considering that everyone didn't treat Levi, Furlan and isabel right because they all viewed them as criminals, Hange, in the no regrets manga, was the first person to be nice to the three of them, and got along with Isabel right away. This kind of gives a little into why Levi and Hange became close later on.

Honestly never seen the OVAs i waited until season 2 ! So shocked there was a whole Levi backstory I missed 😅. Glad I got to watch it for the first time with the bad medicine crew though ☺️

The best translation is pretty much "bro," which is why it pops up so often in these subs. - 28:55 "Omni-directional gear" or ODM gear is, from my understanding, a localization change. The literal translation is 3D-maneuver gear, which is what you where seeing in season one's subtitles, but when they localized the script and translated it to English, they changed the name to ODM gear, which is also what they say in the English dub. This is one of the downsides to watching in subs: you're at the mercy of the will of the translator. Whomever made the subtitles that you watched for season 1 decided to use the more literal translation of "3D Maneuver gear," but the folks who did the subtitles for this OVA went with the localized name. I wanted to mention this so you don't get confused into thinking that there is some difference in technology; it's the same thing, just with a different name. - Yes, O.V.A. is how you pronounce "OVA." It stands for Original Video Animation. You may also see it called "OAV," which is Original Animation Video. It's the same thing. It's basically animation that is released directly to home-video. Basically they are bonus episodes, if you will. - Edit: Please ignore the people asking you to skip openings and endings. They are just a bunch of Barbra Streisands that don't understand how spoilers work. Watching the openings and endings will not spoil anything for you.

How did Erwin beat Levi in the underground chase? I think it's a testament to Erwin's brilliance. He knew Levi's skill was better and instead of face him head on, he used cunning to figure out where Levi would go and ambushed him. That whole sequence and the likely events that happened before it just blows my mind!

I love the No Regrets ova. You get so much more background on Levi, including why he is in the scouts (and made many of us love him even more). As for the other OVAs, 'Ilse's Notebook', 'A Sudden Visitor' and 'Distress' are normally watched before season 2, probably because they are basically little stories that happen in-between the first 4(?) episodes of season 1 (they are set before the Battle of Trost)

Just finished the series about three days ago, and it’s all I’ve been thinking about. Not an anime fan, but this show is a top three of all time for me. As close to perfection of a show since Breaking Bad that I’ve seen. Enjoy the ride fellas, it gets WILD!

One thing to keep in mind is that abnormals and sentient Titans are not the same. Abnormals are just regular dumb Titans, but they behave differently from others,. They might be jumping or running on all fours, or climb, or hide, or simply be feral like this one. It's the sentient Titans that might have people inside, not necessarily the abnormals.

Pretty sure omni-directional and 3D-maneuver gear are the same thing, just different translations

An Abnormal titan is the same as a regular titan, just unpredictable. As in, it's easy to know what a regular titan will do when encountered, while an Abnormal might do something sudden like jump, or ignore you while running past you. A titan with a person inside the nape like Eren or Annie are not abnormal titans. Just to clarify :)

I would like to add that around the time this OVA was to come out the author of Attack on Titan had said that Erwin is the person Levit trusts the most. So it was interesting seeing how they meet because it shows how much changed to go from wanting to kill Erwin, then realizing Erwin is too smart/valuable and has a vision beyond everyone else's that he can't kill him then if he wants to see it too, even if he still wants to be the one to kill him eventually, to the present where Erwin is the person he trusts the most. Not to mention how further seasons explore the bond between these two.
