GIIIIRRRLLLLL. I'm SO HAPPY you're watching this movie! This is one of my favorite period pieces of all time. It's SO romantic, it actually has a happy ending, and it's based on an incredible true story!! This movie makes me cry in a good way, and sheds light on such an important moment in the shameful history of slavery. I had a rough weekend, but I just got home from class and have time to relax... and I see you put this up! What a lucky day for me. I can't afford to be a Patreon member now, but when I graduate and get a job, I will. :D Hugs and love!

it's the opposite of the true story... infact almost all facts were the opposite, how her cousin was the heiress irl and loved by her father who actually deemed her German Imperial Countess mother as his true love, Dido was broke, her father left her nothing, didn't even acknowledged her and he also rape Dido's 14 yo slave mum

Jane Austin's Mansfield Park was loosely based on this family. Apparently, Jane knew of them and must have empathized with Dido Belle.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (b. 1983) is a wonderful English actress who performed in the theatre before she started working television and films. An early film role of hers was as a college student who befriends a much older student played by Tom Hanks in the film "Larry Crowne" (2011),

Yess this was so good!! I was pleasantly surprised. I had no idea what it was about when I saw it come up on KZfaq, but based on the thumbnail, I assumed it would be a mediocre rom-com. But I really liked it when I gave it a shot!

This is also based on a wonderful biography by Paula Byrne (a wonderful scholar of Jane Austen and the period of history around her). I highly recommend it, as well as the film Amazing Grace (and the accompanying biography by Eric Metaxis).

I also forgot to mention that there's a theory that Jane Austen named Mansfield Park after Lord Mansfield and that there's a lot of subtext in that novel about the slave trade. Unfortunately that subtext has yet to be translated really well in a film version.

@freshparchment yes I heard this as well, Jane was aware of Dido Belle and very loosely based Mansfield Park on the situation (a looked down on cousin raised up in the wealthy family, not fitting in. She is the heroine.)

The movie details are not all true to the actual historical facts. Belle's mother was well taken care of. I love how you can read between the lines of the plots. ❤❤ I have seen our friend Malfoy has 2 particularly good rolls... "ANNA AND THE KING" 1999 - He was a well behaved child. "A UNITED KINGDOM" 2016 - A similar role as this movie. He just has that "look" that might cause him to be type casted. These are great drama/Romance themes.

Great reaction. I love this movie, and it fits in well with your recent Jane Austen reactions. Gugu Mbatha-Raw was on a few episodes of _Doctor Who_ as Martha Jones' sister and also starred in the very different superhero film, _Fast Color,_ which you may want to react to sometime. Sam Reid (Davinier), co-tars in the Australian sereis, _The Newreader,_ which I also think you might enjoy.

There are historical experts who have told the true story of Dido Lindsey. Her father had a predilection for African women, as many white men of the day. And he had many children from those women. I think he chose Dido to join his family as a glorified companion for her cousin because they were the same age and to elevate her from the station of lowly servant to someone who would help to run the family estate. She did not live with riches as this character did. She actually wore garments from past seasons, was in charge of the birds on the estate and I believe a couple other areas and never held in the same standing as her cousin. She didn't marry until she'd stayed with her Aunt and Uncle until they were very old and then she married a regular office clerk, not an elevated lawyer or cabinet member as it states here. In the painting with Elizabeth, the historian showed how she was slightly positioned behind her cousin, with older fashions on which were out of fashion and holding items which showed the type of work she did on the estate to "earn her keep."

The father not being involved sooner isn't as clear cut as you might think. I don't know all the details myself, but I'm guessing the mother was owned by someone else. Therefore he couldn't take her AND the daughter nor send her money cause slaves didn't have ownership or rights over things like that and it wouldn't be safe. Then of course it would be cruel for him to just take her away from her mother (even if she arguably would've been better off). Maybe he offered at one point but the mother didn't want to be separated from her baby. We also don't know when the father found out about her.
