We have family friends who have adopted. They were honest about their son being adopted when their child was about five or so. They felt it was best to be honest rather than run into an issue down the road and possible face resentment. Their son was fine with it. He's around 11 or 12 now. He knows he's loved and that's enough for him. :)

Being an actress during that period in Hollywood was beyond difficult the older you got. I can't remember who said it, a producer or director or somebody of high power, said "I would wouldn't pay a dime for those two washed up women" or something close to it. As an Adoptee, born a fratenal Twin, separated from my Twin Brother through adoption, as well as all my other family & siblings, with a closed/sealed adoption, an altered identity, amended birth certificate, & both me & my Twin adopted separately into very abusive homes, (my adoptive Mother was a lot like Joan Crawford in this movie except not a movie star), & still fighting for our rights, & still looking for our birth father & his family at 53 years old, I think its morally wrong to keep it a secret, to lie, to hide from a child their origin. What if you were to suddenly find out tomorrow that the family you thought was your family, was not your birth family of origin? No matter how much "love" was in the adopted family you knew as your family, you'd suddenly question that so called love, if they felt a need to hide things from you. Adoptees whether they are told about their origin or not, will often sense that there is something fundementally different or off about themselves compared to their adopted family. And they will question their "belonging" & their identity, especially if they find out late in life. They will not have anyone around them, (unless a biological sibling is adopted with them), that mirrors them in DNA. And even then it won't be a source of that DNA. Finding our birth mother was a long awaited answered prayer, even though it turned out to be a very difficult situation. One thing that I cannot stress enough, was the delight & relief in seeing someone with my hands. I can not describe the relief to finally have that genetic mirroring from someone who was a source of it. We knew her for a year & a month, before she passed away. We tried to get her hospital records, but because we were "Adopted out of the family", someone who is still technically in the family has to get them. Utterly maddening. Soon we will apply to get our names changed to their original names. We've already applied & been accepted into our Mother's & Maternal Grandfather's Native American tribe. We got DNA tests, but don't really know how to utilize the results in our search for our Father.. One thing I want to add - is that Adoptees are frequently denied an inheritance in either family. Which leaves them in a limbo nowhere state of consciousness. Not really belonging anywhere.

I remember watching this in the 80s as I was growing up experiencing some, not all, of this type of treatment from my mother. We had all seen the movie as a family (apart from my Dad, as they divorced when I was 3) so everyone was familiar with the movie and it was weird watching it and having to not say anything when parts really hit home. One day I made the mistake of responding to my mother's request as , "Yes, Mommy Dearest..." Eh, let's just say that did NOT go over well with her. Incredible movie, it was hard to watch even now, some 30 years later.

It clicked & I ran to my mother & said, " mom, I was an orphan". Never once did I not feel like part of the family within my family, my extended family was another story. The ice facial she gives herself at the beginning was a well-known beauty treatment. You poured witch hazel over ice cubes and then doused your face with it. It was supposed to remove puffiness, but witch hazel is very drying to the skin, so I don't imagine it was good for you if you passed a certain age. It would have ended up making you look older. But, then again, they smoke and drank to excess in those days, hardly a good beauty regimen, so I suppose it was another thing that passed them by.

If you are planning to go on a cinematic journey of Joan Crawford, for a modern audience the logical next step would be "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane", co-starring Joan's arch nemesis Bette Davies. Flmed in 1962 when Joan was still head of Pepsi Corp. The backstage hijinx of "Jane" are almost as famous as the movie itself, with Joan upstaging best actress nominee (for Baby Jane) Bette Davis at the Oscars the next year. The filmmakers play on their rivalry for good effect. It was a solid hit, and is great and ghoulish fun!

This movie has been parodied and hailed so much as a camp classic over the years, that it's great seeing you as a first-timer taking it totally seriously with a sincere emotional reaction. You are right about it being over the top and over-dramatic - the film is exploitative and difficult to watch if taken seriously. Dunaway's performance is overblown and almost comic in some of its "serious" moments, which also may be faulted to bad direction. It is definitely memorable, though and the movie is a guilty pleasure for many.

I think this is a lot more about Dunaway than it is Crawford. I rarely watch reality TV shows but there was one called "Starlet" with Dunaway as a judge (Vivica Fox was another) and they judged 10 aspiring actresses in different acting scenes. Dunaway was harsh, very much like her caricature here.

Although the movie or film was a parody, but by looking at Joan Crawford interviews in the 1950's and 1960's, she was indeed over the top individual. So lets not get it twisted, I think Faye Dunaway did a good job immitating aspects of her persona. You can watch her interviews all through youtube, and Dunaways immitated her perfectly.

It doesn't seem that over-the-top if you've experienced something like it. The comments on a video from the Take are filled with people sharing their trauma and how real this was and that the video didn't take it seriously.

Greetings from Massachusetts! Towards the beginning of the video you asked whether adopted children would prefer knowing about their adoption from a young age or not. In my experience, my parents told me from the moment I could understand the concept of family that even though my mom did not physically give birth to me, that I was no less a part of them and our family. I have always been grateful for their gentle honesty when it came to this because I’ve always felt that if they had hidden the truth from me until later that I would be resentful of their secrecy. I know my situation is not the same as every other adopted person’s but I have spoken to many other adoptees, some with experiences similar to mine and others whose parents kept the truth from them until later, and the majority I’ve interacted with have the same perspective as I do; honesty is the best policy. Thank you for making such enjoyable content and for your insight. Keep on keepin’ on, sis. ✌️💚

I feel like I would want to know because it shows transparency, and your child would never feel like you hid things or lied to them about anything. Also to know that I was specifically chosen by you when you could've chosen to birth your own kids, would make me feel special and maybe help us to have a bigger bond because of that. Most adopted kids that I know who's parents hid the fact that they were adopted from were upset when they found out because they felt like if you hid this from me, how many more things are you hiding or lying to me about? So yea it's definitely a trust barrier there amongst adopted kids. So you definitely want to be as upfront as possible with them because you don't want to grow up having trust issues because of you.

Christina Crawford herself was dissatisfied with what they did adapting her book (which is told from the perspective of the child, a daughter) as it was more about Joan's struggles and became Joan's story. Dunaway (who claims to regret doing the film, though it is one of her most legendary performances) had wanted to portray the relationship from both sides. Christina said in interviews that the only true real thing about the film was the makeup and clothes, all incidents are heightened for dramatic effect. Joan Crawford grew up poor, abused (physically and sexually) and neglected and had to fend for herself to get out, so when she reached stardom, she could never shake the insecurities and fear of it all disappearing, so that had a lot to do with her fierce determination, work ethic, competitiveness, and rigid expectations. Joan likely thought she was doing her children good with tough love than raise them with entitlement. Joan was about herself when it came to her wealth and stardom, but in many ways, who could blame her for being a fighting spirit. As a saying I heard before goes from a parent to a child...My job is to make sure you get to into heaven, not into Harvard, that's your job. LOL

Psychologically, children should always be told they are adopted as they are growing up. Keeping it secret makes it painful because it can be seen as "bad".

You should always let an adopted child know they're adopted. What age you should tell them is unique to the child but being adopted is not the kind of secret you keep. If they find out on their own and you didn't tell them, that would be extremely traumatic.

Ms. Davis calls Faye Dunaway the most unprofessional person she has ever worked with. Faye Dunaway portrays Joan Crawford, who was Davis nemesis, back in the day. The two women could not get along. Ms. Davis most famous quote about Joan "I wouldn't pee on her if she was on fire!"😂

Faye Dunaway actually hates this role and doesn't want to talk about it. She was actually friends with Joan Crawford and viewed her as a bit of a mentor so she felt a bit guilty about portraying her like this. She also thought she was going to get an Oscar for this performance but the critics crushed it for being too over the top. Still became a cult classic anyway

I guess I never saw a lot of the camp during the abuse scenes because I’ve been in these things for real a few times and it’s terrifying. Someone tearing apart your house and your home shrieking like a banshee and hurling every object she can at you. I never saw Faye Dunaway as going anywhere “unrealistic” during the freak out scenes. It’s a lot of her other dialogue that comes off as campy to me.

One day ten-year-old Jimmy's mom and dad sat little Jimmy at the dinner table. "Son," started the mother "As you know, we are a pro-life family. As such we have taught you the importance of adoption. Well, you're adopted." Showing maturity beyond his years, little Jimmy took the news very well. "I kinda suspected. The way raised me to be accepting of adoption and I never had siblings-" "No, you don't understand." Interrupted little Jimmy's father. "You're being adopted RIGHT NOW. Go pack your things, they're picking you up in a hour."

Joan Crawford’s dad abandoned her, she grew up in poverty, and slept with her stepfather at 11. This is how she was shaped as a beautiful adolescent going into Hollywood. She actually had four kids but not shown in this film just Christina and Christopher. Faye Dunaway won an Oscar for the film Network and beat out Sissy Spacek in Carrie. Her other top roles are Chinatown, Bonnie and Clyde, and Three Days of the Condor. The Joan Crawford Oscar winning film Mildred Pierce is excellent and was remade as a HBO series which won awards too for Kate Winslett. Sadly this was before kids could call to report child abuse or talk to teachers. The drink scene where Christina makes alcohol is like Auntie Mame with Rosiland Russell which I HIGHLY recommend a REACT which is based on a true story. The line: Does she have the last word? No since she wrote a tell all book and a film came out which made millions for Christina. Plus she was close to Christopher.

Plenty of people have verified Christina's assertions about Joan Crawford. People in Hollywood that were connected to Joan C, and even some in her private life. It is well documented. Just because others never saw it doesn't mean Christina was lying. So from now on if a young girl says her father is molesting her and her slightly older sister says that she herself didn't get molested then what? That means the younger sister is lying about her experience? ASININE. No wonder so many people don't come forward when they're initially abused, because they know tons of idiots will accuse them of lying about it, especially if there is a powerful person being accused of doing the abusing. In other words, it's backwards, like so many other things in society. I'm not saying that people should be easily convicted of crimes, that would be a terrible slippery slope. But people who come forward know damn well they're going to be attacked, sometimes mercilessly by the defenders of the accused abuser, the idea that they would do this for a little notoriety is again asinine. As far as Christina's book.....she didn't really make that much money off of it. Hitting the NYTimes best seller list when a book is released doesn't men you're a millionaire. Not by a longshot. I've seen Christina give interviews from her home and the thing that struck me was how plain the house was. It certainly wasn't a mansion. It was nice, but not the house of a person rolling in money. I believe Christina, and I always did. And yes it made me look at Joan Crawford differently forever. Just like I can't hear a Michael Jackson song and not think to myself.....this guy molested children. Yes I'm aware of his acquittal, but if you can watch Leaving Neverland that aired on HBO and then put your hand on a bible and swear on your soul that you still believe Michael Jackson didn't abuse some of those boys then you're willing to roll dice that I never would. Never.
