One of my favorite bits is all the clues in the narration "I knew the story before he even told it to me" "For some reason, I thought of my first fight with Tyler" And one that I'd completely forgotten about until I saw it in this edit "It was like I was chasing an invisible man" Some other Fincher that deserves to be seen: Panic Room(2002), Gone Girl(2014), and my second favorite after Se7en, The Game(1997)

Google definition paper street. There’s so many tells, but they switch to something else more extreme as fast as most would start to catch it. “No incoming calls” on pay phone. Brad Pitt in the commercial he’s watching. Exiting the car after the crash from the opposite side they crashed in.

"His name is Robert Paulson!" I watched a reaction from a dude that went from "This Sucks!" to "You Have My Attention!" and finally "Greatest Movie Of All Time!" much like a three act structure. Fun Fact: Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter spent three days recording orgasmic sounds for their unseen sex scenes. Fake Bombs Fact: Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) was originally going to recite a workable recipe for home-made explosives (as he does in the novel). But in the interest of public safety, the filmmakers decided to substitute fictional recipes for the real ones. Beautiful Mess Fact: During the shooting of the film, Helena Bonham Carter insisted that her makeup artist, Julie Pearce, apply all of her eye makeup with her left hand, because Bonham-Carter felt that Marla was not a person who would be particularly skilled at (or concerned with) correctly applying makeup. Lost In Adaptation Fact: Author Chuck Palahniuk first came up with the idea for the novel after being beaten up on a camping trip when he complained to some nearby campers about the noise of their radio. When he returned to work, he was fascinated to find that nobody would mention or acknowledge his injuries. Palahniuk concluded that the reason people reacted this way was because if they asked him what had happened, a degree of personal interaction would be necessary and his workmates simply didn't care enough to connect with him on a personal level. It was his fascination with this societal 'blocking' which became the foundation for the novel. Author Chuck Palahniuk has stated that he found the film to be an improvement on his novel.

I appreciate that your initial reaction to Tyler is to find him a little cringey and tryhard - because it actually fits with the twist later in the movie. Tyler is just a loser's idea of a cool guy, a depressed guy's idea of a happy guy, and a timid guy's idea of a tough guy. But you're absolutely right that a ton of guys saw this character and immediately tried to become like him, all while ignoring the fact that the movie's end shows Tyler to be a heartless and destructive character.
@justmeeagainn
@justmeeagainn Жыл бұрын
I think you may have missed the point of Tyler's character.
@dlweiss
@dlweiss Жыл бұрын
@@justmeeagainn Sorry if I gave that impression. My take is that Tyler's character has a few specific points: 1. To show how justified anti-consumerism and individualism (like he talks about at the start) can easily slip into anarchy or even toxic authoritarianism if you're not careful (when Fight Club becomes Project Mayhem). 2. To show how being a cool, charismatic, clever person doesn't automatically mean you're also a wise, constructive, or healthy person. And that can be dangerous - especially if it inspires others to behave just as cruelly, impulsively, and destructively as you. 3. To show that the Narrator is still struggling to truly free himself from society's pressures, because Tyler is full of contradictions. For instance, notice how Tyler mocks fashionable clothes and jokes about men going to the gym in order to look good - but then the movie also shows off multiple scenes of Brad Pitt's flawlessly ripped body, and Tyler frequently dresses in highly stylish and expensive-looking outfits.

Brad pitt plays Tyler so well. He is such a believeable prick with a very opinionated view of the world. If there is a character played by him that is the exact opposite, is his character from the movie “bullet train” called “Ladybug”. Trust me, if you haven’t watched that movie, I surely recommend it as it has so many set ups and payoffs that really make the movie fun to rewatch. Fun fact: Brad pitt’s stunt double for this movie directed Bullet train. And his name is David Finch.

This story definitely suffers from the villain getting a misaimed fandom like The Joker. The writer of the book is a gay guy who wrote a story about bad shit that happens from toxic masculinity, and ironically, a lot of toxically masculine types love this for the wrong reasons. Tyler makes more sense if you have looked in the mirror and hated what is looking back at you. As a non confrontational man with low self-esteem it's very appealing to become the epitome of "masculinity" (very intentional air quotes there). Everyone listens to Tyler and looks up to him. He is the center of attention and he is cutting himself away from the societal rules that enslave the narrator. But Tyler takes the idea to far. By taking control of his life (literally with a gun in his mouth) he no longer needs Tyler and is mature enough to try a mature relationship with Marla. In the book the bombs fail and the narrator wakes up institutionalized but believes he is dead and that his doctor is God. The writer actually liked the film ending more and wished he thought of it first Great reaction mate

There's a few video theories that say Marla isn't real as well, or the other what got me thinking for a minute was: Tyler has testicular cancer. Tylers mind is trying to come to terms with it, thus creating fake Tyler and Marla.

The whole movie is a satire on toxic masculinity. That scene when Tyler says that you created me, I didn't make up a loser alter ego. At the end, it wasn't about physical damage, but he finally made the decision not to imitate, want, or chase Tyler. It had to be a physical response because that's how Tyler was created, so the gunshot wasn't a suicide attempt on himself, but telling himself he didn't need Tyler anymore.

It was not wise of your friends to suggest that the movie has a twist. That's kind of a spoiler. Otherwise, Jack/Tayler's behavior is based on the same premise as many important works of modern world literature (the book by Chuck Palahniuk is the model). It is actually the loss of the identity of a modern person who has lost close contact with the land, faith, and own integrity. Then comes the destruction, where young frustrated men, disillusioned with the system and their lives, vent their need to at least feel something real by fighting. It is a mirror of the lost Generation X as well as today's sterile society. And by the way, also one of Fincher's greatest masterpieces.

You’re 100% right, there is a whole toxic filmbro community of like “alpha male” type dudes who idealize Tyler Durden. Which is. Ironic, considering both the film and the book actively work to deconstruct and criticize toxic hyper masculinity by taking it to the absolute extreme. Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the book, is an openly gay man. It’s interesting how this is a trend of weird cringey conservative dudebros latching on to these stories written by gay and trans people and completely missing the point. Another example being The Matrix by the Wachowskis.

nah those movies just prove that "woke people" can be unintentionally "based" sometimes and make a good cinema, sure there is schizos who take it to the extreme and make those movies their whole personality, but seriously, don't get so salty and gaslight implying that being conservative in any way is evil and "wrongthink", because they have different views on what authors meant originally

When the movie came out no "conservatives" existed in the hip generation of the late 90s, early 2000s. EVERYBODY was a socialist douchebag. As a reaction to the 80s hyper consumerism and weaponized patriotism. And Tyler Durden was their god. All his messages are anti establishment and super leftwing if you havent noticed. And how you got trans people into the mix i dont even fking know.

I think you caught on to Palahniuk’s intentions with the character well enough, but don’t discriminate so much against Tyler. Just because he has to share a brain (an existence, for that matter) with the narrator doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t real. 😉 The narrator’s power animal did tell him to slide. One can definitely slide too far, though.

If you let it run for a long time, it would get clear. This is the water that I collected for my family. The orange water does taste funny, in case you were wondering. Not funny haha.
