Kai is humble genius. If he took half the credits he deserves..... For me this song talks about depression, and is very powerful and helped me in a very dark time of my life.

You've seen the guitarist with the pink guitar, Kai hansen, in a Helloween video. He was a founding memeber of Helloween and left in 1989 to form Gamma Ray. The bald singer (Ralf Scheepers) was the singer on the first three albums, (this song was from the first album), then Kai took over lead vocals. The other singer (Frank Beck) was hired more recently so Kai coudl concentrate more on his guitar playing and move around the stage more. Kai is now reunited with Helloween since 2017, and Gamma Ray has been pretty much on hold since then, except for a few live shows, including this one.

Many here don't know that Ralf Scheepers was GammaRay singer on first album, where tou can find find The Silence, a song that had been sang during Kai Hansen's wedding. Ralf left GR trying to replace Rob Halford during his judas priest split but Tim Owens was preferred... so he founded Primal Fear :) Those were the "big splits years" in Heavy metal so it make the final part very important... after so many years: Forever....Togheter!

I've heard Gamma Ray before, and have a couple of their albums in my music library, but it's been quite a while since I've heard them, and 'The Silence' is all new to me. I was expecting power metal, but it has much more storytelling than I was expecting. I suspect those also aren't the same singers I heard before. Quite a ride.

I could distinguish a few rock influences within the track..which I have not heard in years. Clearly a band who have become polished over the years…I remember them as a raw band back in the late 90’s. Love the sudden and unexpected tempo changes. Overall, a very complete and competent performance…amplified by it being a live performance. Glad you liked it Sabina, a good example of a band who have evolved with time.

Wow, thank you for this. Not to many people, if any, react to Gamma Ray. Honestly, your the first I've seen do them. The guitarist Kai Hansen was originally in Helloween, but then left and formed Gamma Ray with Ralf here. In the mid 90's Ralf left to audition for Judas Priest, after Halford's departure. Ralf lost the gig to fellow screamer Tim "Ripper" Owens. Afterwards he formed the band Primal Fear with bassist Matt Sinner. I highly suggest you check out the songs Metal is Forever and Sign of Fear to see why he was considered as Halford's replacement, the note will pierce your brain.

This was good, the original singer Ralf Scheepers 30 years later and a hired gun, very good match. Ralf has kept himself in a good shape, which shows. I own everything Gamma Ray has ever released, same goes to Primal Fear, you could say, that I like Ralf and of course guitarist Kai Hansen, nowadays back in Helloween and who´s creation Gamma Ray is. A fine power ballad this is, one of the better metal power ballads or ish, good rendition of this old masterpiece.Glad you liked it ! And, Ralf is also a vocal coach/teacher, so he really knows what he´s doing with those pipes of his.

Well, the next surprise is that this was the better 'HellOweeN' during the years until that reunion you've already seen :) And the ever smiling guy w/ the red guitar - Kai Hansen, the 'godfather' of 'Power Metal', actually the best phrase is HAPPY METAL 🍺🤠 - was founder and singer of both the bands. His name Kai means 'a keeper of the keys' BTW 🥸 He also: is a lead guitarist and (a great) songwriter in all his projects; was the 1st vocalist of Helloween until Michael Kiske showed up in 1987 (the reason Hansen left 2 years later had nothing to do with that and unlike the rest of the Helloween they remained best friends with Michi and even did a lot of work together through the years, even though Kiske said he was totally not into Metal anymore 😅 - but still is the best voice in Rock at all), now - one of the 3 singers and the 3 guitarists; was the 2nd vocalist of Gamma Ray - after the bald guy here, who sounds like Rob Halford 😁, Ralf Scheepers, left in 1993; did a great job in helping and giving a 'kick-start' to many other great european talents in the genre, like Blind Guardian or Hammerfall for example; played and sang in many studio songs (as Blind Guardian's "Valhalla" and other early works of theirs) and live performances of many other project too...; and most of all, he's a great inspiration for unnumbered metal musicians and fans through all the years :) This on-line Live was a kind of reunion too, like the one they did with Helloween since 2017. And here we have 3 vocalists again! 🤣 He hired Frank Beck, the long haired guy here (a former semi-amateur singer and long-time fan, who used to sing covers of Gamma Ray) to do vocals for the band in the recent years because Kai's own voice got tired and faiding as he himself was never a trained professional vocalist like Kiske or Scheepers, but... most of Gamma Ray's songs actually sound best w/ Hansen on vocals, incl. those of the Ralf's era 😁👍 So, for best impression, you may listen to the '2000 album "Blast From The Past" and all the acoustic performances that are easily findable around here...

Ralf is doing great for his age,but I prefer the version of the song from Japan that was 30+ years ago. There he was just unbelievable compared just to the early Halford.

A lawsuit between two labels blocked power metal band Helloween (which you've also heard) in 1989. Guitarist and songwriter Kai Hansen then left the band and founded Gammay Ray. Today he is the only founder in the band. In the early years, the bald head Ralf Scheepers was the singer. When he secretly applies to another band, he is thrown out and Kai takes over the mic. So this is a temporary reunion for the anniversary. In 2015, a doctor advised Kai not to continue singing so intensely. That's why Frank Beck is engaged, the second and actual singer in the video. Gamma Ray isn't the most successful band, but it is one of the most influential.
