You should watch the series Dragons: Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge, they dive deeper into what happened on that 5 year gap between the first film and this. They expand on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, Hiccup and his dad, as well as flesh out the rest of the gang, and how Berk adapted to living with dragons. You should also watch the Gift of the Night Fury holiday special because the events of that are referenced in the next film.

Yet another wonderful thing about the trilogy is that it's also widely celebrated as some of the best disability representation in film. There's SO MUCH going on relating to this in the first film and the trilogy, but here's a few points about this first movie. The plot is about a disabled dragon adapting to his newfound disability with the assistance of a young Viking, who later becomes disabled too. Best of all, you wouldn’t even describe HTTYD as a film ABOUT disability at first either, because the story uses disability to enhance and augment the real themes and overarching plot - like life. Almost everybody in Berk has been injured, lost a limb, etc. Their society has structures in place to enable everyone to continue their way of life, and no one is treated any differently for it. Hiccup is 'able-bodied' for most of the film, and although he has a change in his physical abilities at the end, the film ends in a lighthearted way. Hiccup and Toothless work together to get to the door. Disability isn't seen as something that isolates an 'other' from the group, but something that can a bring people together. In the final scene, we see the prosthetic for both Toothless and Hiccup perfectly fits together to form a whole piece. Although each of them were missing some form of function, together they support each other. Because this portrayal is positive, it showed the audience that even though someone went from being able-bodied to disabled, it didn’t necessarily mean something had to change about that person’s personality, or even their abilities. They could still fly together!

This is my favorite series ever. All three movies, the shows, the MUSIC? OMG THE MUSIC IS HEAVENLY

20:16 Remember, Toothless was flying through the night sky at top speed, perfectly fine before Hiccup hit him with the net. When Hiccup caught Toothless in the net, that's when Toothless' tail was injured - which is why Toothless couldn't fly out of the valley once he went down. At the end, Hiccup lost his leg when Toothless caught him (while saving his life). So now, they match ❤‍🔥

The problem is that the dragons have attacked Berk every night in order to take their livestock (like the sheep at the start) to give to the alpha dragon - driven by fear and the alpha's control. Naturally, the Vikings try to protect their animals (and source of food), which causes a clash and leads to destruction of their homes with angry dragons. It's a difficult cycle, and it's all Stoick and the other Vikings have ever known. They have definitely lost loved ones to dragons, which makes it worse. When Hiccup first reveals his connection to Toothless in the ring, Stoick speaks out of anger and immediately regrets saying those words to Hiccup - you can see it on his face right after he walks outside. He feels betrayed by his own son. Did you notice the creators made a point of having Stoic apologise and assure Hiccup he is proud to call him his son BEFORE Hiccup killed the dragon and saved the day? They made sure we saw the father recognise his mistakes and show his love without it being reliant on the child’s success. I appreciate it so much.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite franchises of all time. The creators really took their time to create a story that naturally evolves in 3 movies. Can't wait for you to watch the 2nd (which is my personal favorite).

How to Train Your Dragon is also a book series. It is very different from the movies. But Hiccup's Dragons' name is Toothless.

There is a pretty popular fan theory that the reason Hiccup lost his leg is because Toothless had to catch him by it and accidentally bit it off. (Since hiccup was falling head first.) There is a line is the second movie that helps the theory.

The Vikings have Scottish accents meanwhile Hiccup has a Canadian accent thanks to his voice actor. It's utilised to show how different Hiccup is to the rest of the Vikings. Fun little detail

In this fictional universe, a lot of the Vikings (usually from Denmark/Sweden/Norway) have Scottish accents. So that's what you're hearing when a few of the adults (Stoick and Gobber for example) are speaking 🙂However, Hiccup and most of the kids don't have Scottish accents.

While I liked the dragons in ‘Fourth Wing’, I wasn’t really sold on anything else. Try ‘His Majesty’s Dragon’ by Naomi Novik- fantastic dragons.

HTTYD is a perfect trilogy. I'm not exaggerating, I would even argue that isn't an opinion, it's a FACT. To this day, I can't believe how incredible the entire trilogy is.
