Storyline
In the Initech office, the insecure Peter Gibbons hates his job and the obnoxious Division VP Bill Lumbergh who has just hired two efficiency consultants to downsize the company. His best friends are two software engineers Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar, that also hate Initech, and his intrusive next door neighbour Lawrence. He believes his girlfriend Anne is cheating on him but she convinces Peter to visit the hypnotherapist Dr. Swanson. Peter tells how miserable his life is and Dr. Swanson hypnotizes him and he goes into a state of ecstasy. However, Dr. Swanson dies immediately after giving the hypnotic suggestion to Peter. Peter, in his new state, starts to date the waitress Joanna and changes his attitude which results in his being promoted by the consultants. When he discovers that Michael and Samir will be downsized, they decide to plant a virus in the banking system to embezzle fraction of cents on each financial operation into Peter's account. However Michael commits a mistake in the software on the decimal place and they siphon off over $300 thousand. The desperate trio tries to fix the problem, return the money and avoid going to prison.

Yeah this movie was a real underground hit. Originally it wasn't marketed well because the studio didn't believe in it... Then it got famous from word of mouth and became a cult classic. Swingline originally didn't make a red stapler -- Mike Judge had his art department paint one for the movie. Then bootleggers began making bank selling painted staplers until Swingline finally realized what was going on with eBay, and started making their own official version. It's now their top-selling product! I appreciated the coffee montage, nice touch. As a photographer, if you want to react to a couple of movies Roger Deakins worked on, Sicario and Jarhead are great. Sicario has some gorgeous night shots that few other movies have pulled off. I could recommend a wall of movies, but I'm not sure what you're into that you haven't seen.
@RyanCarrington
@RyanCarrington 3 жыл бұрын
Ah I see! In the long run it's probably been to the movies benefit Good but of trivia about the stapler! I've seen Jarhead. Not for a long time but I did Love it! I've watched all sorts, but from people's suggestions I've still made a massive list. I'm pretty open to anything though.

Mike Judge, who wrote and directed this movie, also did a movie about manufacturing work called *Extract* . It mostly focuses on the boss, so it's still about white collar work rather than blue collar work (like *Office Space* ), but it is still about work. It's not as well regarded as *Office Space* , but I like it a lot.

I think I remember tiny red Swingline staplers back in the early 1970s (....sold as school supplies ).....but after this film was released, people wanted FULL-size red staplers. Yes, the cubicles were like that, and often still are. Someone I know was a school teacher. In the last days of the school year, there's the usual slack attitude of not pushing to start new stuff. He brought this movie in and showed it to the class and was startled to find that none of the jokes hit home with the students. I guess you have to go work out in the real world for just a little bit to get it. I've never met anyone who worked in the real world who didn't get the jokes. Favorite scene: the flair scene with Jennifer Anniston. Last time someone mentioned TPS reports to me? Yesterday.

Like it or not, it is of my own personal opinion that in the manner that "Airplane!" served right properly to ordinally cap off the 1970s, "Office Space" likewise single-handedly was responsible for serving right so properly to cardinally kickstart the new millennium. Just sayin', mind you. 😊😊😊

I won't name the giant mega corporation that I used to work for but to give you an example of how crazy things are these days we were subjected to random searches upon entering the office although they never defined what kind of contraband they were looking for, you could get written up if you didn't use the handrail on the stairs or had loose shoelaces or went one mile above the speed limit while driving on the facility. You could even get fired for it. Even when I would take an Uber or Lyft or a company car I was responsible for what the driver did. So if I call to lift to pick me up to go to the airport and the guy sped on his way in even if I wasn't in the car I would get written up. They even had a custom mandatory app for our company issued phones where your fellow coworkers could take a picture of you and report you to your manager if you committed any of these horrible offenses. But we all put up with it because they pay more than anybody else... SMH

@@RyanCarrington love this movie and have watched it dozens of times. It's art imitating life for me. I had a job that I hated as much as Peter hated his. At one point, I realized that they couldn't fire me because they had no one that could do my job unless I trained them first. I wasn't hypnotized like him, but I know the sense of freedom that Peter felt. As a matter of fact, except for cleaning fish at my desk, everything else he does in the montage is something I literally did myself. Made me wonder if Mike Judge had been following me around taking notes. (Not really of course).

I have unfortunately (or fortunately!) But what a reaction that would've been. It's actually one of my favourites. I have the book too! I remember buying it on DVD after hearing about Hunter S Thompson. I watched it a lot 😅

I'll be honest, this movie starts SO SLOW. I like it, but I have a hard time making it thru the first like... Third. I realized I should mention, I feel this way about Grandma's Boy, too. They're both in my favorites list.

His neighbor....the dude with the mustache....he's also in a movie called 'Napoleon Dynamite'. A low-budget independent cult classic......that's funny as hell & bizarre in every way.

Who was he in Napoleon Dynamite? I really liked that movie. I actually saw Jon heder at Comic Con. He was jokingly mocking a woman who was filming him from a distance, he was using lots of Napoleon Dynamite-isms but she really didn't get it and got super offended. We all thought it was hilarious though. Didn't really understand why she was filming him if she didn't get his humour 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey Ryan, I've checked out a few of your videos now and I think you have the vibe and the wit to be a bigger commentary channel! I'm going to give you a subscribe. Just one suggestion; try to make your talking and the video you're commenting on the same volume. It gets annoying having to adjust volume in between your talking and the movie. If its too low to hear the movie then I don't know what you're referencing a lot of the times, and if I just leave it it at a high volume your voice blows out my eardrums.
@RyanCarrington
@RyanCarrington Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I just checked this video out, and the volume is way lower than intended. It's a shame I can't just increase the movie track a few dbs. I think I've rectified this in newer videos though. I got unhealthily fixated on audio at one point haha Thanks for the sub. I appreciate it 🙏

so this will age me, but i need to explain what this movie did to me. it came out the year i graduated high school and for whatever reason peters mood / attitude has stuck with me ever since. it set in motion my need to do what made me happy. ive turned down job offers after meeting the "main boss" because it wasnt worth it! damn it feels good to be a gangster, "O" face & "jump to conclusions" have been phrases i have used for 20 years now!
@RyanCarrington
@RyanCarrington 2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with this! I left a job earlier this year because it was making me so unhappy and just wasn't worth the money. Happiness and mental health had to come first.
