Coco Movie Description:
Despite his family's generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Héctor, the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.
Coco is a 2017 American computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich, it is directed by him and co-directed by Adrian Molina. The film's voice cast stars Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía and Edward James Olmos. The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living and to reverse his family's ban on music.
The concept for Coco is inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. The film was scripted by Molina and Matthew Aldrich from a story by Unkrich, Jason Katz, Aldrich, and Molina. Pixar began developing the animation in 2016; Unkrich and some of the film's crew visited Mexico for research. Composer Michael Giacchino, who had worked on prior Pixar animated features, composed the score. With a cost of $175-225 million, Coco is the first film with a nine-figure budget to feature an all-Latino principal cast.
Coco premiered on October 20, 2017, during the Morelia International Film Festival in Morelia, Mexico. It was theatrically released in Mexico the following week, the weekend before Día de Muertos, and in the United States on November 22, 2017. The film was praised for its animation, voice acting, music, visuals, emotional story, and respect for Mexican culture. It grossed over $807 million worldwide, becoming the 16th highest-grossing animated film ever at the time of its release. Coco received two awards at the 90th Academy Awards, and numerous accolades. The film was chosen by the National Board of Review as the Best Animated Film of 2017.

They took great care in being true to the Mexican culture of viewing death. There are 3 deaths: First, when the body dies. Second, when the body disappears from view (burial or cremation). The third death is the hardest - it's when no one is left alive that remembers you.

Ok, this is one of the best done twist villains since SPOILERS "Monsters Inc". There are so many references and hints to Ernesto being the bad guy, but we don't think of it at all at first, taking the information we're given and accepting Miguel's way of seeing events. We think that Hector is just a trickster and conman and Ernesto is the big hero, but the opposite is true. Hector never truly lies in the movie, only dressing up and trying to get across out of desperation to see Coco one last time. "Ernesto's"guitar is personalized, with the skull on the headstock having Hector's gold tooth. Hector, when being mocked by the musicians, says it was food poisoning(he wasn't wrong!)and notes that musicians are "self important jerks". Is this a feeling of self loathing he felt to himself? Or Ernesto? Hector stops Miguel from singing "Remember Me". Thats because it was a personal song between him and Coco, while Ernesto made it all about himself. Ernesto's alebrijes are chihuahua's, showing he's really a small man with a huge ego. The fact that he doesn't show up to his rehearsal shows he doesn't care about the songs or the music Hector made, but just the fame that came from them. When Hector drinks in memory of Chicarron(the old man who goes through the Final Death), he leaves one glass full. This hints at his murder by poisoning. "You'll thank me later!" Hector tells Miguel when he tries to take him back to his family. He knows what a mistake he made and died before he could make amends. He wanted to keep Miguel from making the same mistake. When Ernesto tries to give his blessing, the petal doesn't glow, showing he's not related to Miguel. He even ignores the guitar when Miguel drops into the pool. Hector is barefoot throughout the film. However, when he finally is accepted back by Mama Imelda and the family, he's wearing shoes(the family are shoemakers). Fun fact: Word of God is that Ernesto is not dead after being crushed by the bell the second time, and can never die the Final Death now(thanks to being infamous)but he's now hated in the living world and the land of the dead, meaning he'll never again have the adoration he literally killed for. Think thats a far more meaningful punishment in a film like this.

@@TheSuperMarioBrosMovieFan2003 The two are totally different, lol. I mainly meant that the lead up to Mr.Waternoose being the big bad was very subtly done. Imelda was still hurt and angry that Hector left her in the first place. He was gone long enough to write Coco letters so we’re talking months or maybe years. He never indicated when or even if he would ever come back. She said “you left me with a child to raise”. Back then it was difficult for a woman to support themselves since they were usually housewives who took care of the home and kids. Now on top of that she had to be the breadwinner too. There was no daycare, so it would have been impossible for her to find a job with Coco being so young. So she had to become self employed so she could work from home. A lot of older businesses in Mexico are in houses and that was done on purpose. Things have changed in the last 30 years or so, but I remember going there to visit family as a kid and still seeing a lot of businesses being part of the houses. All this happened because Hector wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a famous musician. He could have just found work in their hometown, but he had such a passion for music that it became more important to him than his own family. He didn’t have to leave. He chose to leave. So you can see how she would still be raw about it, and why she hated music after that. He was gone a long time before he ‘suddenly’ decided to go back home and leave Ernesto. Of course, we all know what happened after that.

@@Josemunoz-hi9nh I said months or years, so the word “months” was stated. It was long enough for him to write a whole bunch of letters and poems to Coco, so it wasn’t just one or two months like you seem to be suggesting. Imelda didn’t know when or “if”he was coming back and the bottom line is that he never came home. She only found out he was murdered when Miguel told her so she was still feeling the pain of being abandoned with a child. Her reaction was justified.

I’m a Spanish teacher, and the year this came out, we took our 8th graders to see it in theaters as a field trip. Also I love seeing others be introduced into it through this film! Two things in this movie stand out as amazing feats of animation. #1 Dante's furless skin. They had to get the skin movements just right when he moved, shook himself, and fell over. It is really amazing that they got it so accurately. #2 The guitars. Every guitar strum and pluck and chord on screen was animated correctly. That is actually how you would play those in real life.

10:55, if you know Frida Kalo's work, this is some of the funniest scenes xD , a lot of her paintings were a lot of self portraits with sexual and surreal undertones. Dante could pass through the Spirit World because he is a Xoloescuincle dog, in Mexica (Aztec) mythology, those dogs guided the spirits at the start of their way through the Spirit World. And if you mistreated those dogs when you were alive, they wouldn't help you, and your soul wouldn't find rest.

Me relating to all of the new Disney/Pixar movies because they feature abusive family relationships: I don't get how people can live like this either. You'll come to realize especially with a film like Coco that this sentence can help a lot of people when it comes to understanding, "Hurt people, hurt people."

I gave this a like because I wanted to commend you for sincerely crying on camera and not being afraid to let people see you react like that. This movie smashed me in the feels the same way when I saw it and I've got tears streaming down my cheeks even now. I watched it a few months before my own grandmother passed away with dementia and it makes me think of her every time I see anything to do with it. But my point is, good on you, Mell, for not editing around your tears for the sake of ego or machoism. I think a lot of men need to know it's ok to cry sometimes. I'll be honest, an overly emotional guy is repelling to me but I also don't think it's fair for guys to bottle up their emotions all the time too, especially when women get a free pass. A happy medium ground is possible.

One of my favorite Pixar movies! They even have a Coco Special on Disney+ where they had some of the singers and actors perform.

Dude the marketing for this movie did it dirty. I had ZERO expectations for this movie, but it blew me AWAY! I thought i had the plot pegged to a T but the twist actually got me! And the scene with Coco had me in tears! And the MUSIC WAS SO GOOD!

Hey, @mellverse, the dog can see the dead because it's a Xoloitzcuintle, a breed of dog indigenous to southern Mexico. They are named after Xolotl, god of twilight and passings. In prehispanic beliefs, the dog was a herald and would accompany the soul of the departed on their journey to Mictlán, the underworld. There was a big river to cross, and the dog would help you swim across it; if you were an asshole to dogs in your life, the dog would not help you. More religions should point out the importance of treating good bois right. Edit: it also tickles me a lot that the dog is named Dante.

The first time I watched coco my nana had just been diagnosed with dimentia. My then 10 year old son burst into tears when she started singing 'remember me' knowing his grandmas memory was fading. She has since past and this film will always have a very important place in our hearts. R.I.P to my beautiful Nana Facchini 💖

When you asked “why is she doing that? Be mature” about not forgiving Hector after finding out he was murdered…that’s the Latina/Hispanic way, holding grudges forever lmao

Just saw your Coco reaction video. I gotta say Coco is my favorite Pixar movie. When I was a young kid, my great grandmother looked almost like Grandma Coco. She would tell us stories about how the Indians would, well you understand.

Like seriously, I'm NOT a crier, but the idea of someone being forgotten and disappearing from existence just gets me. That's my sad thing (happened with Bing Bong in Inside Out as well.) If it tells you how I am NOT a crier, when my mom found out this movie made me cry she was like, "What the heck is this movie that made *YOU* cry?" But I love it so much.

I loved this movie the Grandma reminded me of my Grandma and the women SOOO reminded me of the Tia's. the only complaint i had was the music was Mexican in style but the lyrics were in English THAT hurt my ears BUT aside from that i loved the movie.

11:33 Chorizo is a type of meat, but they are laughing at him beacuse of a dirty joke. Chorizo comes in the form of a sausage, so at saying "He choke on a chorizo", can be interpreted as "He choke on a dick", and that's why they're making fun of him :''v
