I honestly really love the ending in this musical/film. In the book, when Matilda found out they were moving, she ran to Miss Honey’s house and practically begged her to ask her parents to let her live with her, which Miss Honey gratefully accepted. In the 1996 film with Mara Wilson, Matilda asked her parents to let her live with Miss Honey, along with already having adoption papers, but Miss Honey was already on board with the idea of taking her in. This version however has Miss Honey be the one to ask if Matilda wanted to live with her. I love this ending out of the three renditions of this story because throughout the entire musical/film, Matilda believes she can only rely on herself and nobody would ever do anything for her, so to have someone as kind as Miss Honey want to take care of her is beyond heartwarming. Not to mention the hug she gets at the end is also sweet because it’s obvious she’s been deprived of any positive human contact, hugging being one of them.

Same, I love that this matilda is more of a "saying no to injustice" while the older one was more in a group with her classmates. (I don't prefer any tho, I like to have both because are little nuances that changed a lot of the character while still showing 2 possible "correct" or good approaches)

Alisha Weir, from Dublin, Ireland, was awesome in this movie. She played her part with perfection, evidently having put many a long hour into learning her lines, her songs, her expressions, her movements. Astonishing performance from one so young. Growing up I loved watching the original Matilda movie. I admit it took 2-3 watches for me to really love the musical, but that is only because it's so lyrically dense! But what a touching story, with some really great songs. My favorite is probably Revolting Children. It is a real earworm for me, and this version is incredible.

This is such a great musical! It probably has some of the most clever lyrics I've ever heard (though I would expect nothing less from Tim Minchin)...some fun facts about the stage productions: ~they would cast four young actors to rotate the role of Matilda, and in the Broadway production, one of the original Matilda's was Milly Shapiro, who went on to play Charlie in Hereditary! ~Miss Trunchball is played by a man onstage ~"When I Grow Up" uses swings for it's choreography and it's just *chef's kiss*.

As a thespian, I’ve watched a lot of musicals, and I’ve performed in some. Matilda the musical has to be one of my favorites, and I really love it makes the parallels between her and Miss Honey. My only critique was they should’ve kept the brother Michael, the storyline of Mrs. Wormwood of being a ballroom dancer with her song “Loud” or even Mr. Wormwood’s song “Telly”. And if they ever revived the musical on stage, need to add “Holding My Hand” as the finale. If you love musicals or musical. Other Dahl works you should check out are BFG, James and the Giant Peach and The Witches (1990). If you were wanting more musicals I highly recommend these: Hairsplitting (2007), Mamma Mia, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music, Sister Act 1-2, Annie (1982 and 1999), Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, Cats (1998), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999), and Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997). 👩🏻👩🏾‍🦱📚🧠

While I agree that Holding My Hand is a wonderful finale, it’s not exactly right for stage in my opinion. Just as the Naughty reprise wasn’t the right finale for this movie so they wrote a different one. On stage, it’s hard to end a big, bombastic show with such a peaceful, soft song. It just doesn’t translate well. Whereas the upbeat, loud, ensemble number of the Naughty reprise was too much for the kind of tone they were trying to set with the end of this movie. They were trying to show that yes, they’re having fun now, the school is in good hands, the kids are allowed to be kids again, but most importantly Matilda and Mrs Honey are now safe from all the abuse they suffered, they saved each other, and now they can finally live in peace and just be. The end of the musical is a “Look at this fun live show we just put on” number while the end of the movie is a “look at the happy ending these characters got” number.

I was an usher at a big theatre in our city when the stage production of Matilda came to town, and I still remember how magical it was. (Since it was my job, I got to see it almost every night for months.) To answer your question, the movie is very faithful to the show! The "When I Grow Up" song was always my favourite to watch. They had swings on stage, hanging from the very roof of the theatre down to the stage, for the kids to sit on while singing. And then when the adult dancers/actors (playing the older kids/teenagers) came in and took their turn on the swings, they would get a running start and dive into the swings on their stomachs and soar out over the audience. Between that choreography, and the swelling music, and the beautiful message of the song, it was hard not to get chills, even after seeing it 20+ times ❤

As a lover of theater and being an actor myself, I can confidently say that this adaptation was nearly perfect! They only cut a few songs, and the small changes that they did make serviced the film very well. A fun fact about the Stage version of this show is that Miss Trunchbull is always played by a man! Miss Trunchbull is supposed to be a massive, hulking and ugly woman with a deeper vocal range, and the best way to achieve that on stage is by gender swapping the actor. Obviously doing this wouldn't translate well on screen, so I think that thy made the right call on casting Emma Thompson. If you get the chance, I'd HIGHLY suggest listening to the original Trunchbull Bertie Carvell, he's INCREDIBLE in the role, and I think he's even better than Emma Thompson for me. Great Video, and I look forward to seeing more from you!

They did go down the male route to start as they cast Ralph Fiennes to play Trunchbull but unfortunately he dropped out of the movie, still I think Emma Thompson absolutely smashed it and her voice was incredible.

The visuals were stunning, the characters had such good actors/actresses, the songs were amazing, the values/lessons to learn were all amazing. There was the sense of kindness and respect on how to treat others coming from ms. Honey. There was the sense of bravery and acceptence from Matilda. In a way even the trunchbull had a lesson to be gained. That would be to be responsable and productive at school or work. Her methods were completely wrong and her actions towards the students were aggregious. Which is why Ms. Honey has such an easy time with the kids compared to her. Nobody likes to be told what to do especially children. That being said they still have to be productive and learn. They cannot always be rebelling against the system. Ms. Honey tries to understand the children and their needs in order to keep them happy and willing to learn. An act of kindness can go a long way. On a seperate note I dont really care if they switched up the story a little from the older movie with Danny Devito even though I loved that one too. I didnt care that certain characters races were different because that didnt matter. They still acted the same as they shouldve and didnt bring up a bunch of political mumbo jumbo as some remakes are today. The additional content to Ms. Honeys backstory made it feel more authentic too. It came together very well. I was a little curious as to why the brother wasnt in this though? The updated settings and animation for Matilda's powers were so cool. The chains moving looked awsome. I loved how they included multiple chokeys after Matilda broke the 1st. It seems like a thing the trunchbull would try to do. Ya know up the ante. She is very competitive in nature due to her career as an athlete. The librarian getting more time was so cool too. She was so kind and interested in Matildas stories. You could tell she cared about her well being when she questioned if everything was going allright after the stories got darker. Bruce getting more of a highlight after trunchbulls downfall was great. After being sent to the chokey in front of everyone due to the cake scandal it felt like he would be the best person to inform everyone of the news through the mic.

I went through a lot in those three years when it was their time to have us neither of them knew how to handle my disabilities well either. Dad wanted to watch this movie with me back in January and I had to have him fast forward through where she gets pushed into her room and yelled at thats happened to me then when she tells about the girl locked in the cellar and her dad saving her and dying my dad would have been unalived too or any other family member in his household if i told so I too had nobody to save me after seeing the movie I started getting flashbacks and having sudo seizures as well as real ones and was hospitalized for 2 days and diagnosed with depression anxiety and cptsd I go to childhood trauma therapy now weekly

Not enough people react to them and as someone who works in theatre professionally (behind the scenes) it makes me so happy to watch people discover the magic of musicals. I want to recommend a few pro shots (filmed live performances instead of movie musicals) I HIGHLY reccomend; Billy Elliot live (hardest child role ever. Based on the hit movie. Music by Elton John) Hamilton (about Alexander hamilton and the other founding fathers told in a contemporary way, written by Lin Manuel Miranda) Newsies the musical (based on the Disney movie about the newsboy strike in nyc. Insane dancing) Come from away (based on real life people and their stories when their plane got grounded on 9/11) Waitress (based on the movie about a young married women who bakes pies in a small town) All of those are completely different genres/vibes and all really excellent In The Heights is great too.

I agree that it's virtually impossible to capture the magic of "When I Grow Up" on the screen. This film gives me weird, mixed feelings... It's still a somewhat beautiful movie and I prefer the pacing and storytelling of this movie to the stage musical, but I have issues with the way they did that, because it made this movie less faithful to the book, keeping stuff they added for the musical version (that I'm not a fan of) and cutting out other things which were more true to the book... and I'm not totally keen on how they altered the tone... Yet it's arguably still a decent adaptation of the stage musical and the choices they made do still kinda make sense... Personally, if I had to pick one adaptation from this film, the older film and the stage musical, I would have to say that the older, Danny DeVito film is probably the best option... Though the original book is my favourite ^_^;;. I have some issues with the old film, but they are relatively minor... There are aspects of this film and the stage musical which I love more, but there are also things I dislike more... Complicated feelings here lol.
