But or Rent - Matilda - / watc
This film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father (Danny DeVito) and mother (Rhea Perlman). Worse, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.

Mandatory fact that you will find under every matilda reaction: During filming, Mara's (matilda) mother had breast cancer, so Danny Devito and his wife took care of Mara. Her mother even passed away a few months before the movie was released, but Danny Devito was able to get an early copy to show Maras mother in hospital.

Her powers were symbolic of a child who's abused/neglected, wanting a way to have control and a voice. It was a way for her to feel less powerless (a way to escape from trauma). She didn't need it once her life became more stable, and safe.

Fun fact, the woman who plays Danny DeVito's wife in this movie is his real life wife. Also, the girl who plays Matilda, Mara Wilson's mother was sick and dying during filming. Danny paid out of his pocket to get an express copy of the movie so her mother could see the movie upon it's completion.

You mentioned that when you cry you get a migraine. I also have that issue, but I was told that it’s mainly caused by you trying to stifle your crying. When you do that you may hold your breathe and straining to hold tears back. That deprives your body of oxygen and the straining causes inflammation around brain and neck. That is what causes the migraine. Best thing to do is allow yourself to cry. (You may still have a migraine if you have an extended bawling session from an argument or something) but taking deep breaths when you cry and it will calm you and prevent the migraine. Also get a glass of cold water to cool you off and help blood flow and shrink inflammation. Hope that helps. I hate migraines and know that it can really put a stop to your day.

Here's some other trivia about this story: In the book, Matilda's powers were like pent up brainpower from how her advanced mind wasn't being challenged enough in her life (she was intellectually bored, basically), so when she gains a better life that lets her freely practice her intellect, her powers subside.

As the story goes, contrary to his character Devito was a favorite of the kids on set while filming. He took a personal interest in the well-being of all his child actors and they actually had a reunion of sorts years later in the form of a tea party to celebrate the re-master on BluRay.

My mother wasn't cruel (my dad was) but they both often left me on my own all day. My mom did because she had to work or we wouldn't eat, and my dad did because he just didn't give a f. My mom used to make him watch me but then he'd take me out wherever he went and then just leave me somewhere, so she kinda learned it was safer for me to be alone at home instead of alone on a random sidewalk or in the middle of the woods. It's crazy how a kid's sense of danger and what not to do when left alone can kick in. I remember knowing not to leave the area my dad would leave me in, or else he might not find me again, even though he never once told me this. It's like a survival instinct or something. But I wasn't nearly as smart as Matilda lol I could not cook for myself.

I prefer the "Matilda (1996)" movie over the book. Danny DeVito directed this movie to greatness. MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS: "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with Gene Wilder is so good. Another great movie is "Charlotte's Web". It's based on the novel by E.B. White. And it's animated with catchy and memorable songs like "Chin Up!". Plus, the characters are fun, memorable and iconic. Totally recommend. WHY I RECOMMEND THEM: "Matilda", "Willy Wonka" and "Charlotte's Web" were some of my childhood favourites.

Amazing reaction to this gem! I’d really love to see you do a reaction to the musical film! One significant difference about Matilda’s powers in the book and stage adaption is that in the end she no longer has them. While Matilda believes the reason is that she has no need for them anymore, Miss Honey believes that her mind is now being more challenged in her schoolwork than it was before. 👩🏻👩🏼‍🦱📚🧠❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷

If you watch the new Matilda, it adds the Broadway songs and slightly changes the final confrontation to match the musical (and use new CGI, the only negative thing I can think of…). I’d recommend at least listening to the songs, video’s only needed for the School Song so you get the joke easier.

The narrator and the dad as two different roles played by the same actor. That's more or less what's going on here. I think Danny DeVito should have hired someone else to do the narrator voice, because you're right that it doesn't make it very obvious that he's playing two roles here (or three of a sort, since he's also the director). He tries to make them separate by giving them two different accents, but it's not as obvious as it should be. In the book Matilda has a theory that her powers come from her lack of intellectual stimulation. After she goes to live with Miss Honey she also starts going to a more difficult class where she can learn more, and Miss Honey keeps her occupied at home with lots of books and stories, she no longer has her powers. They slowly fade away. So she suspects the "energy" her brain has, is now put into learning, when before she had leftover energy. Something like that. So she ends up without powers. 😊
