Where do you want it to go?!? So - few things... Rocky trusts Mickey, he has a locker so he's paying Mickey to train. When Mickey says: "Its a waste of life." That cuts deep from the person you trust. It hurt him so much which leads to the scene where he's letting it out but he also knows that he can't do it by himself and he Needs Mickey to even have a shot. Even after training Rocky knows (guesses) Apollo is way out of his league, he feels that 'he's just another bum from the neighborhood.' He sets his sight on one goal: "To go the distance (all 15 rounds)." If I can go that distance then I'll know for the first time in my life - I wasn't just another bum from the neighborhood. This is only part of the reason why many of us connected with Rocky. Adrian is also a part of it too! Girls we liked - especially if we didn't know their names where: "Adrian" All my cars are called Adrian lol At the time this came out I at least didn't realize till much later that Adrian was also Connie Corlone! Few people notice - or more accurately mention 'how dirty and run down everything looks.' In the theaters - that stuck out big time! Being only 13 when we saw it - we mostly focused on the 'boxing aspect' but the story between Rocky and Adrian stuck out! FYI: It might be worth a re-watch just before you react to Rocky 2! Rocky 2 is way, way way better than this Excellent and Epic show! 😺 Thank you 😺Addie!!! 😺 But, where's Ollie?!?

In the end Creed won by split decision meaning it was so close, even the judges didn't all agree who won. Rocky didn't care about winning. He got through the whole fight and "went the distance". He just wanted to prove to himself and Adrian that he wasn't a bum.

You could hear a pin drop when they said the words "split decision", the theater crowd was absolutely nuts until then. I was a young doorman at a theater in 1976, and loved this movie.

And much less boxing than most people envision in their head, even if they've seen it. Much like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is known as a super-bloody movie, but it has very little shown in it. This movie has only small bits of boxing in it.

Some people get surprised when Rocky goes back to shake Mickey’s hand after venting. Or how he puts up with Pauley day in and day out. It’s not just about Adrienne. Rocky is truly big hearted and generous. I think it’s one of the more complete character representations in cinema.

The moment Rocky turns down the offer to fight Apollo always hits me hard. How many times in our lives we turn down opportunities because the world around us just wears and tears us down that we don't believe we are good enough or worthy of even the chance. It's so relatable cause we all have felt that at some point.

It was a moment showing self-doubt, humility and fear, traits modern Hollywood characters never exhibit. And that's why Rocky is endearing.

@@znk0r yeah it was a moment of real clarity in the midst a heart stopping offer. He also didn't know he had it in him if put to the test and could be trained hard with a purpose. The knockdown in the 1st probably gave him an insane amount of confidence too.

I've always said that this movie does a great job of highlighting the trauma of poverty. The characters don't see opportunity around them, let alone examples of success, and so can't imagine success for themselves. This leaves them accepting their lot in life - Paulie self medicates with alcohol, Adrian accepts being lonely and her brother's abuse, and deep down Rocky does see himself as "just another bum from the neighbourhood" and as such never really took his shot (which is why Mick gives him so much grief - wasted potential). Great characters, great story.

Talia Shire does not get enough credit for her acting chops. Her performances in the Rocky franchise are phenomenal. In this movie alone she goes from a person who one is not sure can even speak to a woman of incredible depth and strength. And she only gets better in subsequent films. I hope you watch at least though Rocky IV and remember that shy little pet shop girl as she becomes the bedrock upon which Rocky makes his stands and from whom he draws all of his strength. Rocky is one of the greatest LOVE STORIES ever put to film in large part due to Talia Shire's performance.

Not quite. Stallone was certainly photographed with the turtles in 2019, but there's no evidence that they were in his care. In 2006, the Philadelphia Inquirer confirmed that the turtles were returned after filming and were, at that time, still being cared for by the (now-closed) pet store. (Source: Snopes)

A lot of people misinterpret Adrians shyness and rocky having to coax her into trusting him as being too aggressive or creepy but I too am shy and understand the plight

@@bossfan49 I get what you're saying, but I literally had discussions like this when the movie first came out on VHS, it was something a few critics even noticed. It's such a subtle, specific scene that is easy for some people to misinterpret. Also, I assure you, when it comes to misinterpreting things, the 70's and 80's make today look like a paradise. You had Video Nasty's being made federal crimes, without any of the governing body actually watching them. We used to bring directors of controversial films to fucking government HEARINGS to get them to say under oath that 'film is pretend'. It's gotten waaaaaaaaay better

Yeah, Rocky's never portrayed as a violent guy. Sure, he's a boxer and he loves boxing but even in the first fight at the start of the movie she's shown being friendly to the guy he fought at the locker room after the fight, and outside of the ring he never wants to fight anybody or act tough. After watching the six Rocky movies and the first two Creed movies you get to know him so well that it feels like Rocky's your uncle or something.

In regards to Rocky being a little pushy when Adrian's in his apartment, I think it's perfectly fine. I'm a man, but I'm not the most social of beings, and I really appreciate being with more talkative women who can make me come out of my shell a little. It's pretty obvious that Adrian is very reserved and not very social, but she likes Rocky quite a lot and needs someone to push her a little in that direction.

More Boxing Stuff: championship boxing matches are 12 rounds. They were 15 rounds until the mid-1980s. Every round is judged to see who did better. If no one is knocked out(or cant continue) by the last round, judges will tally to see who won the most rounds. A "split decision" means some judges think one fighter won, others think another won. In this case, two judges said Apollo won most of the rounds while one said Rocky won most of the rounds.

Hi Addie, as much as you love Rocky the character after seeing this, it will interest you to know that Sylvester Stallone's own story mirrors Rocky's in a lot of ways. He was barely making it as an actor, had an idea for this movie about an underdog boxer, and shopped his script around for a while. It got so bad financially that he could no longer afford to feed his big dog, none other than Butkus -- yes, Butkus was Stallone's own dog! He had to sell Butkus because he couldn't afford the food, and he needed the money to survive himself, things were that bad. After he sold the script, the project was underway, and the funding began rolling in, he used some of the initial money to go buy Butkus back, reuniting with his beloved friend, and had him in the movie!

@@toochangz - Well yeah... in the boxing end of things it's pretty obvious that 'Rocky' is Chuck Wepner. Wepner after all, was supposed to fall in a few rounds at most against Mohammed Ali, and somehow lasted all the way to 15. But as this reactor noted, 'Rocky' is about a lot more than boxing. Stallone's script was a character study, and thus notable in many aspects beyond boxing. This is what made this film a huge success. In fact, it became one of the highest budget to gross ratios ever recorded in the film industry, costing $1 million to make, but raking in more than $100 million at the box office (and eventually becoming a multi-billion dollar franchise).

I’d recommend not letting too much time go between watching this movie and Rocky II. Or even following that with Rocky III. The second one picks up the story right after the end of the first. And the third one is a lot of fun.

33:22 - This is a perfect description. He's a boxer, sure, but that's just what he does, not who he is. Rocky Balboa, as a character, is possibly one of the most compassionate people in films. Even to people who don't deserve it - like Pauly. But he's not soft, either. He stands up for himself, like unloading on Mickey about not being there until there was something in it for Mick. His feelings, his pride was hurt, and he showed that side, too. But he still forgives. It's not a weird thing to say that Rocky is gentle. It's straight fact.

I agree... But not until she watches Rocky 2! The first and second movies are a 2 part full story more than a simple sequel. Rocky 3 is a sequel, but 2 is the second half of a complete story.

Stallone got the idea for this movie when an unknown boxing contender named Chuck Wepner went up against Muhammad Ali, who is arguably the greatest boxer who ever lived! Even though Wepner lost by Technical Knockout, to everyone’s surprise, he lasted up until the 15th round! At the time Sly had been in parts here and there in the movies. So selling his script as well as convincing people he could play the lead was a tremendous uphill battle. This movie actually beat out Star Wars at the Academy Awards for best picture of the year! And to this day, people travel to Philadelphia to run up the museum steps in commemoration of the Italian Stallion!

What a Classic Drama/Romance/Sporty Plot! I was overwhelmed with this movie the first time I saw it, then I realized there was a PURPOSE for the "Split Decision" loss... because ROCKY II really picks up where this one leaves off, and the other ROCKY Movies are undeniably even more captivating!!! This movie is the ultimate definition of DETERMINATION, PERSISTENCE and RISING UP to the CHALLENGE!!! Rocky has truly proven himself as a WINNER...a representative of all the downtrodden population!

The "Rocky" Movies are movies about Relationships and Personal Growth, with a little Boxing thrown in...... Actually Butkis was his dog, he had sold the dog before the movie and bought it back when he got the movie deal....... The scene where Rocky points out the shorts are the wrong color, was added cause the printer messed up the poster/prop and they didn't have enough money left in the budget to correct it, Same thing with Rocky's robe being the wrong size..... So they wrote in dialogue to address it.....

Stallone said it himself... "This was a Love Story with some boxing added in.". In Most Split Decisions, The judges usually side with the Champ, and involves Boxing "Politics". And what does it say about The Rocky Theme, when 48 Years later it's STILL the most recognised Song ever!

This movie was so impactful that the city of Philadelphia erected statue of Rocky at the top of the steps with his arms raised. "Rocky III", picks up where this one ends. ✌️❤️🌹

Fun fact, Stallone had to sell everything he could just to finance this move. He wrote the script and refuse to give up the rights to produce the movie unless they agreed to let him star in the movie. He was trying to sell his dog when it was finally picked up. That dog was his dog Butkus, who was in the film.

The way I heard it, he actually sold Butkus, and when he went to buy him back after the script sold, the guy held him up for like 5 times the selling price, but Sly really does love animals that much, so he took the offer.

in boxing there are 3 judges at ringside who award points to each boxer every round. the split decision would be because 2 of the judges awarded more points to Apollo Creed and the third would have awarded it to Rocky

FYI - The name of the theme from Rocky is called, "Gonna Fly Now." It was released as a single and went #1 on the US pop charts in the spring of 1977.

Rocky said all he wanted to do was go the distance so he would know he was a somebody. And he did. The movie ended at the peak moment of his life (they didn have plans for 5 more rocky movies and 4 spin offs atghe time) so it ends with him going the distance with the champ and the woman he loves in his arms. One of the greatest movie endings

The Rocky series isn't a boxing series. It's about a man trying to work through the problems in his own life. Boxing is just the manifestation of his own fight against his problems. That's why so many people connect with Rocky. He's relatable because he is deeply flawed, and has so many shortcomings. But he finds a way to persevere. Mostly through Adrian helping to "fill the gaps" in his life. Wait until you see Rocky 2-4. You'll see why Rocky became such an iconic franchise.

There are judges in boxing. If it is a knockout, that determines the winner. If not, the judges make their decision and it is them who determine the winner. If they all agree, it is a 'unanimous' decision. If not, it is a 'split decision' and the majority determines the winner. I enjoyed your reaction as always. Each round in boxing is also determined with a 10-point scale ... the judges decide who gets how many of those points per round based on what they see in terms of aggression, the number of landed punches, etc. So if one boxer has a decisive round versus another, the judge might give all 10 points to that dominant fighter. If it's close - they may split those points 4 to one boxer and 6 to the other or whatever. The totals are added up at the end and they see who had more points after the last round.

You can also have a Technical Knockout (TKO) where the ref deems a fighter unable to continue to fight for there own safety and they can call the match. You can see this happen when a fighter keeps getting knocked down in the same round or more common for a TKO when a fighter is disoriented to the point that they can't even keep there guard up.

Fun fact, Stallone still has those Turtles. In the end, Rocky said to Adrian that all he wants is to go the distance, which he did, so in his mind, he won, the decision doesn't matter, the Judges scored 2 to Apollo and 1 to Rocky (split decision), making Apollo the actual winner of the fight, but it doesn't matter to Rocky, that's why the decision is happening in the background while Rocky is shouting for Adrian, he doesn't care about the win.

I love the Rocky movies. I think Rocky II is better than the first. It's better paced and the Rocky/Adrian relationship develops so much more. The ending is super satisfying, too. After that the series becomes more...over the top, I guess, but not in a bad way, in Rocky III and IV, before going back to its roots in Rocky V (it's still the most hated entry in the series, but I really like it) and then Rocky Balboa. Creed is also really good and Creed II is a fantastic follow up, especially because of how it ties in to Rocky IV. I haven't seen Creed III yet, but I want to. I look forward to your reactions.

Rocky lost the championship fight but won his personal battle. He didn't want to win the title, because he didn't think he could. What he could, barely, think he could do at the least was "go the distance" (last to the end of the fight without being knocked out or the referee stopping it). Rocky's "Championship Belt" is Adrian. After the fight was over, he *immediately* calls for Adrian. They profess their love for each other, and both win at the end.

More Boxing suff: Sylvester Stallone got the idea for this movie from watching a Muhammad Ali fight. His opponent was a guy whose nickname was the "Bayonne Bleeder" because he always got beaten up in his matches. But in his match against Ali he actually knocked him down(he was really off balanced but it counted), which surprised everyone. Unlike the movie though, Ali beat him to a pulp a few rounds later. But they remained friends. Chuck Wepner was a good sport and a pretty good guy when he wasn't getting his face smashed.

I think this movie does a great job of highlighting the trauma of growing up in poverty, the trauma of living in an impoverished community. These people don't see opportunity around them, let alone success, and so cannot imagine success for themselves or what that would even look like. How do we see this manifest? Well, Paulie self medicates with alcohol, until pushed Adrian had come to accept a lonely life and Paulie's abuse, and Rocky was so down trodden by fear and doubt that, as Mick points out, he never really ever took his shot..... hell, he even turns down the chance to fight for the heavy weight title initially. None of them believe they deserve any better because where they come from, everyone's "just another bum from the neighbourhood." Wonderful characters and a wonderful story.

Say what you will about some of Stallone’s other movies - even a couple of others in this series - but the original “Rocky” is a heck of a piece of work. There are certainly some people who’ve earned Oscar nominations for both acting and screenwriting, but only a handful, including Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, have ever done it in the same movie, and Stallone did that here. Also, Stallone is only a partial Philadelphian, as he was born in New York but went to high school in Philly, but the character of Rocky has been fully embraced by the city. This movie is shown outdoors near the Art Museum (where the famous steps are) every year around the Fourth of July. 9:24 The promoter is played by Thayer David, an oddball character actor who was probably most well known for appearing in the supernatural soap opera “Dark Shadows.” 20:04 You were so distracted by the raw eggs that you didn’t notice the radio announcer mentioning that it’s 28 degrees outside. Brrrr.

Let's not forget that the first of the three 10-foot bronze Rocky statues created by A. Thomas Schomberg was returned to Philly, and since 2006, still resides at the bottom of those famous steps, and is a super big tourist attraction for selfies/photo ops.

"Your ARE an animal lover"... You have no IDEA! Butkus was Sylvester's IRL... He was so broke before the Movie that he had to sell him. With his First Check, Sly found the guy he sold Butkus to and bought him back (at an EXTREMELY HUGE Mark up). The Lead Singer of the Corner "Jukebox" was Sly's brother, Frankie! And the Song they sang "Take you back" was written by Frankie.

Boxing stuff: 2 weeks is definitely on the shorter end. Particularly for this day and age, boxers will want to train for their match(or fight either is fine). It's like any sport, at the highest level you want to prepare, be in shape, know your opponent. A training camp can easily be at least a month. At the highest level boxing is a business so contract and promotions can drag the time between fights for months if not longer. But "club level fighters", like a Rocky Balboa in the mid-1970s, that isn't preparing or studying opponents that practically just needs the work, 2 weeks is optimal since he probably needs the money. It's basically his job. His earnings is his paycheck. Of course it wouldn't be a matter of days, especially if you're a Rocky and get beaten up during the course of a fight.

Addie! There are three judges. They award a point for every solid blow to the opponent. In the end two had more points for Apollo and one had more points for Rocky...split decision. Really glad you started this series. Keep going; you won't be disappointed.

Paulie is such a complicated character. He sometimes has a good heart and other times he is just the worst. His drinking is obviously the catalyst. Rocky always takes care of him though and takes him back but isnt afraid to put him in his place when he needs it.

I love Carl Weathers in these movies. He’s not a bad guy or a villain. He’s just a great fighter/showman whose cockiness leads him to underestimate Rocky, and he gets his ego checked.

Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor when this came out. He got the inspiration from a real pro boxing match where Muhammed Ali, the world champ at the time, got knocked down by a virtual nobody named Chuck Wepner in a fight in 1975. Stallone wrote the script as a way to put his struggles as an actor into a compelling story, and used boxing to show those struggles while making the love story the true heart of the film. He turned down more money to make the film because he refused to let anyone else play the lead role, and at one point was so broke that he sold his dog to make ends meet (the dog in the film is really his dog that he bought back once the script was sold).

I'm so glad you recognized that Rocky is just a flat-out good person. He cares about people (and animals) and we saw him prove it all throughout the film. Watching you get emotional during his final training montage had me remembering the first time I watched this in the movie theater. I was just nine when this first came out, but I still remember the audience's reaction when Creed went down the first time. I'm just glad everyone sat down after jumping out of their seats and cheering or I couldn't have seen the end of the movie.

Read the IMdB trivia about this movie, it is fascinating. Also, Rocky II is one of the rare sequels that was actually better than the original. Rocky III-V I could take or leave, but the last installment, Rocky Balboa, is the perfect ending to the franchise.

Back then, championship fights lasted 15 rounds. Today, 12 rounds is the maximum for a championship fight. There are three judges scoring the fight. In this case, two judges awarded the fight to Apollo and one scored for Rocky, meaning Apollo won by 2 votes to 1 for a split decision victory.

If you watch closely during the fights you can see them filming the actual movie around the ring you can see the big cameras with big square fronts. The dog was his real life dog named after Dick Butkus.

I've always felt, what made this movie so great was the level of realism in each and every character. Rocky being slightly creepy on his first date. Paulie being detestable towards Adrian. Mickey and his relationship with Rocky. Even the gangster Gazzo being more than just a thug. And then finally there's Rocky being so aware of the lunacy of being given this opportunity at all. Everyone has depth and vulnerability makes the story that much more real.

Rocky is a small time club fighter is given the shot of a lifetime. Rocky is considered just a ham and egger who doesn't stand a chance against Apollo Creed The King Of Sting. Rocky with Adrian by his side takes the champion on and he goes the distance! Most important, he won Adrian's love which is greater than a World Championship.

Great reaction! One of the great movies I've ever seen. It took me a while to understand that it was more a love story than a boxing story. I cry every time I watch i t. Also, Burgess Meredith as his manager. I have always loved him from the original Batman & Robin TV show, several episodes of The Twilight Zone, among other things. Also, not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet or not, but the pup in the movie Budkiss, was actually Stallone's dog in real life that he had to sell because he was so down and out. But when this movie worked out, the first thing he did was went and bought his dog back. Everything about this movie is just perfect.

Butkus was Stallone's own dog. Before selling the script for Rocky, Stallone was so broke that he sold Butkus to a new owner for extra cash. After selling the script, Stallone tracked down the new owner and bought back Butkus, but the owner wanted 10 times what he bought Butkus for. Rocky paid and put Butkus in the movie.

Thinking Rocky is just gonna be about boxing is like thinking First Blood is just gonna be about shooting guns. The two most popular Sly movies are among the most underrated films ever made. But hey, at least, it means you were in for a great surprise. :) The Rocky/Adrienne love story is one of the best love stories of the 70's.

A lot of people made fun of Sly and his acting, But this film really proves he is a underrated actor. He lived in the character completely and made the audience feel every hit Rocky took both in and out of the ring. The whole Rocky series is worth the watch. They're not all great films, but Rocky as a character is great if that makes sense. lol

The banner of Rocky with the red trunks was an actual mistake by the props department. Stallone added the lines to explain the discrepancy, but many critics thought it was meant to foreshadow how brutal the fight would be, showing what the white trunks would look like by the end.

Happy new year! Rocky was Stallone's iconic role. Before that he was in much financial trouble. The movie had a very limited budget, so much that the robe he wears at the end was accidently oversized, so they included it in the movie, and the banner which had his shorts with wrong colors was also accidental. Stallone and Weathers were actually hitting each other, which resulted in the opposite of their character's wounds (Weathers had his face messed up and Stallone had broken ribs). Rocky was not so much a movie about boxing than a movie about the character Rocky, how he was a disrespected bum who got the opportunity to prove himself.

Stallone himself has said that Rocky is not a boxing movie. It's a love story that has boxing in it. Rocky II starts up right where Rocky ends and it's just as good, if not a little better, than Rocky.

If u haven’t watched Stallone’s FIRST BLOOD, u should put it on the list. Stallone’s character is a former Army Green Beret (special forces) who served in Vietnam. Its not a war movie, its about what he experiences when he comes home.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the Rocky movies are sport movies, they’re actually a franchise about the characters life. One of the best franchises at showing the total evolution of a character, the highs, low, good and bad times. Every movie is at a minimum good with some being great. Worth every minute of viewing. The technical term is a boxing bout, but fight or match are also used too. Back then (1970s) they could last up to 15 three-minute rounds (Only 10 or less today) In older times there was no round limit, only knockouts or surrender. Ever since the round limit started, they've had 3 judges scoring on points too, for things like strike count, or knock downs. In this bout, one judge scored Rocky with more points, but the other 2 scored it for Apollo, hence him winning. "Spilt decision" means not unanimous, & it's usually only a difference of a point or 2 on their cards. 2-3 months is the average time to train for a championship fight, which is why Apollo couldn't get anyone, but for a guy on the skids like Rocky, who counts on that money, 2 weeks is an eternity. Championship fights used to be 15 rounds. Then it was either 12 or 15. Then there was a death late in a lightweight championship fight. It was very Rocky-ish, where it was a brutal fight with both fighters inflicting huge punishment, taking huge punishment, and neither willing to quit or back down. After that, all the sanctioning bodies eventually got rid of the 15 round option, and all championship fights are now 12 rounds.

I have always wished they had not made a franchise out of Rocky. The sequels were entertaining, but Rocky as a stand-alone film is a masterpiece, and part of what makes it so powerful is the uncertainty, the fact that Rocky does not become Champion; he proves, past his prime, that he "isn't just some bum from the neighborhood."

Fun facts: Stallone based Rocky on a fight between Muhammad Ali, the flashy trash-talking Heavyweight Champ in 1974 and Chuck Wepner, a "Club Fighter" from Bayonne, NJ, and like Rocky Wepner gave the champ more than he bargained for, but he to came up short in the end. Butkus was is Stallones actual dog that he had to sell prior to the movie because he couldn't afford to keep him, until the money poured in from the movie and Stallone was able to buy him back later.
