The scene were Sloth rips off his shirt and reveals his Superman shirt is an “in joke”. Richard Donner directed The Goonies (1985) and Superman The Movie (1978).
@tvfella
@tvfella 2 жыл бұрын
There is a second reference to Superman the movie. Dave Grusin, The Goonies composer, briefly quotes John Williams's score just as Sloth reveals his shirt. According to the liner note in the soundtrack, Grusin never told Richard Donner he was going to do this and Donner loved it so much he ran into the studio, as he had done when he heard the Williams theme back in 78.
@happyninja42

@@tvfella The thing I loved most about that scene, isn't so much the Donner reference to Superman itself, it was the two brothers' reactions when he ripped it off. Having grown up with him their whole lives, they would know what he would be like when he decided to "be a superhero" which is why it was SO great when they immediately cut to the two of them after the reveal, and they go "oooooh shit....we're fucked...." xD

This is one of those cult movies that kids loved in the 80s that we grew up with and watched over and over because there was no internet so we just watched the same stuff on tv hundreds of times. But that being the case, everyone had seen it and loved it. When I was about 37ish I was on vacation in Oregon and I did that same road trip you did across the bridge to Astoria and Cannon Beach and all that, but for me and other people my age it really is a super emotional thing because it was mindblowing to see my childhood. If you drive into Astoria you can see their house that they filmed in, it's still there.

Fun Fact: after filming Richard Donner planned to escape from the cast by having a vacation at his home in Hawaii. Little did he know, Steven Spielberg had flown the kids to Hawaii…ahead of his arrival. The cast took over Donner’s home & emptied their cases out everywhere 😂 Also, the reactions of the kids when they first see the pirate ship are genuine. They were kept off the set until the moment they went down the tubes & into the lagoon. As part of his reunited series last year, Josh Gad managed to gather the remaining cast members for his vlog & it was awesome!!

Lots of Easter Eggs were part of Sloths dialogue, since all he did was watch TV all day long. So he referenced shows and movies constantly. When Sloth and chunk reappeared at the top of the ships mast, right before sliding down the sail with a knife (copying a 1935 pirate film called Captain Blood) Sloth yelled "Hey You Guy-eezzzz" which is a reference to a children's show on PBS called "The Electric Company" in the late 70's/early 80's. It was really popular with kids who were too old for Sesame Street but not yet teens. I think I was in 5th and 6th grade when everyone I knew ran home to watch it after school. I was in high school when this movie came out in 1985 and the entire audience busted out laughing when Sloth yelled it... because we ALL grew up on the Electric Company.

I rode my bike around and explored with the best of them, but you know what my favourite thing to do was? Stay inside and read a book, listen to music, draw or make something. Cause I’m an indoor kind of person. Josh Brolin tells the story of this being his first ever trim trying out for a film. He snuck into the audition and got the part. And then became Thanos. This film is just ridiculous, and somehow that makes it awesome. It's not trying to be anything but exactly what it is. Spielberg is a damn genius. Super 8 is sort of an homage to this film and a few others. It's been my experience that in general people who didn't watch this as a kid don't "get" it. Glad you got the vibe and idea of the movie because it really is a gem. Some of the most genuine on screen relationships ever... just kids who are friends ragging on each other but also always there for each other. You really understand the sense of family they've created. Their reaction to the ship was genuine. They hadn't seen it until that moment. They kept the set totally secret from them. And it is a MASSIVE soundstage they filled to the literal limits.

So the hand on the car scene I don’t think is a reference to anything in particular but I think you may be thinking of the scene in back to the future where Marty is hanging onto the car and is on his skateboard. It reminded me of that at least.
