I think Nolan's instincts lead him towards more intellectual, stylish films. But there's clearly someone (perhaps his wife/producer, Emma Thomas) who pushes him towards more emotional work because like you say it does resonate with audiences.

I’m a grown man and i’ve served in the military but every time i rewatch this masterpiece of a series i cry like a little bitch. Such a fucking special piece of cinematic history.

I served as a combat medic from 2018-2022, and while things have changed, I loved seeing how much is still the same from the old ways. Also, very much can attest to recruiters will say just about anything you want to hear until you sign that dotted line. They didn't put airborne in my contract and told me I could just volunteer for it in training. The fuck I could. Tried getting it in Korea, no dice. Tried getting it in Virginia, no dice. Then we pulled out of the sandbox and I wanted no part of peacetime army

I think you also have to take into consideration the way the ending affects the beginning with Teddy being shot. His confidence and ignorance at using Leonard ending up going disastrously wrong is fascinating to realise at that moment at the end.

This movie bored me tired me out and made me fall asleep to it during the movie so my memories were even more limited about it

I got a concussion many years ago with associated anterograde amnesia, which is what Leonard has in this movie (and fortunately did not persist in my case). I was only ever able to recall bits and pieces of that evening. I was very confused, and had the constant feeling of having just woken up. The way this movie is presented in reverse is not only brilliant for the twist at the end (beginning?) but is very effective in capturing the experience of anterograde amnesia. In fact, I was under the impression that I had spent the evening of the incident drifting in and out of consciousness until I learned about anterograde amnesia years later in a psychology class in which we watched a video about Clive Wearing (who expressed feelings similar to my own). I asked my mom about it that evening, and learned that I had, in fact, been conscious the entire evening of the incident.

I've been thinking about it for a while now. The editor, you cut Natalie point of view on cousin forbidden love. Why? Was it too scandalous?

It broke my heart watching this film for the first time, and every time since. It was hard to read that in reality they were unable to get the train back from the death camp.

Nolan uses structure to cause the audience to FEEL what the characters feel. In this case, we needed to feel disoriented, wondering "did I see that? do I remember that?"

The black and white was used to note the scenes that were progressing in forward order between the scenes that were ordered backwards. At the end of the movie, the scene turns from black and white to color when the two progressions finally met.

When this movie came out Nolan was no where near as well known as he is today. I saw this movie during a limited theater release in an independent theater. Completely blew me away in my late teens..

I had bought this on DVD. Watched it once. The DVD got jammed in my player and got destroyed. I wanted to watch it again. I could not. Very frustrating. There was a special edition DVD that had as a special feature, the entire film in chronological order.

21:50 In the scene where people enter what they think is a shower but fear might be a gas chamber shows water because the Nazis used it as part of their deception. They led victims to believe they were entering a shower for hygiene, but it was actually a gas chamber disguised as such. This manipulation with water was a cruel tactic to keep victims calm before releasing deadly Zyklon B gas, which was used to horrifically execute mass murder during the Holocaust.

This is also one of my favorite movies. I had no idea what it was about when I watched it the first time and the first thing I did when it ended was go back and watch it again to see it all with new eyes knowing what was really going on. I have heard there is a cut of this movie where everything is put in chronological order as a Special Feature on the DVD.

Jesus Natalie, the Vicerys slander made this too annoying to watch. The option put forth to him was to either try to save the child or lose them both. There was no option put forth to save the mother. Would you have just watched them both die? 🤦‍♂

Hearing Leonard Nimoy's voice just makes me a little sad, the same for James Garner. I hope they know how much kids and people of my generation adored this movie.

I would have had the ending, Lenny going into the basement after killing Teddy, and finding out all the "good" they had done getting rid of murders and people that commit SA ect but got off on technicalities, with maybe a video of Lenny after he got the original John G saying trust this Teddy guy, he will help you. Because soon I will have forgotten I finally got him, the man who took her from me. And the need for revenge will start all over again. Or the basment has proof that Teddy was on the take from the mob, and these were all mob hits and Lenny was just the fall guy
