At 21:36 Beni spoke Hebrew, which Imhotep recognized as a language from his own time, and that is why he did not kill Beni. The original film had subtitles for Imhotep in this scene, which I did not see here (don't know if they were missing or if they were cut-off in the screen capture). But anyway, when Beni prays for his life in Hebrew, Imhotep says, "You speak the language of the slaves," and spares Beni's life because he needs a servant that he can communicate with.

Exactly. It was the language, not the symbol, like many think. David was well after imhotep's time so he wouldn't recognize the star. Only the language.

@@DeusSalis Little Mermaid is about a female mermaid, so of course it isn't going to have a male main character. Haven't seen the latest Ghostbusters, but I highly doubt there are no straight white male main characters in it. First five or six Spiderman movies featured straight white Spidermen, but feel free to mald over the fact that there's at least one Spiderman that isn't white. Peter Pan? What? Lord of the Rings has plenty of straight white white male main characters. Epic fail. Every Star Wars movie and show has straight white male main characters. Epic fail. Cleopatra is a movie about an ancient Egyptian queen. What a huge shock that it may not feature a lot of white characters. Terminator has no straight white male characters? What planet are you from? Mad Max, the main character of that franchise, is a straight white male. Every single iteration of James Bond so far has been a straight white male. Wtf? Get Out features a black protagonist, doesn't change the fact that lots of media still features straight white male main characters. Like the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, or the upcoming Mission Impossible movie. The Matrix has no straight white male main characters? Lol. Get a life, dude.

22:10 Imothep took him as an slave, not as a worker. Before being killed he started praying to diferent religions/gods in their native language, the last one he prayed was in hebrew or hebrish, with the symbol of judaism in front of him. Imothep recognized it as the language of the slaves from ancient egypt (you know, the story of Moises, the 10 plagues, etc.) and thought he could be usefull.

The way it seems to me is that Imhotep didn't recognize the Jewish Star of David Beni was holding, but the Hebrew language specifically as that symbol wouldn't exist during the time of Israel's captivity in the timeline of the story.

My (now deceased) wife, Debbie, and I viewed this one upon its original theatrical release, and since I currently own the DVD trilogy along w/ the Tom Cruise version and all of the 1930s through '50s franchise issues, this probably bewrays my strong interest in the series. Incidentally, my spouse worked for a time @ a CPA firm in which Brendan Fraser was a client and she acquired his autograph, so that's one of my inherited (and somewhat prized) possessions of hers.

If you girls were wondering about the blood turning into water, the sky turning into darkness, the swarm of locusts, boils, and the fiery hailstorm, those were a part of series of ten natural disasters in the Bible known as the Plagues of Egypt. In the book of Exodus in the Bible, Moses, a Hebrew who was adopted by the Egyptians and grew up as a prince and was exiled to the Arabian desert for killing an Egyptian guard who was seen beating a Hebrew slave, came back to Egypt (After speaking to God via burning bush at Mount Herob) and persuaded the Pharoah to release the Hebrew slaves, but the Pharaoh refused. So, with God's help, Moses unleashed the ten plagues upon Egypt to try to convince the pharoah into releasing his (Moses) people from bondage.

This is my absolute favourite classic adventure movie. Such a well crafted story and characters. Beni might be my favourite, he's the perfect coward. Even though he's greedy as hell, his cowardice actually saves him from the curse, as he runs away when they open the box. Then that whole scene with him praying to all the deities he can think of, dude not just carries a dozen religious symbols but he can actually pray for mercy in all the languages. xD I think he solved Pascal's wager, just believe in ALL the Gods to be sure.

I've said it before and I will always say it with both pride and confidence: The Mummy AND The Mummy Returns are both better than The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. I LOVE the chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz (love Maria Bello, but her faked accent left everything to be desired) and while I LOVE Jet Li, Arnold Vosloo plays a villainous ancient corpse way better.

I watched The Mummy and Mummy Returns multiple times as a kid (and the unrelated Christopher Lee film too). They were good roller-coaster ride adventure films. The third film and the 2017 remake were absolute garbage. How awesome it would be if they did a proper sequel with Brendan Fraser AND obviously Rachel Weisz? With all that revival nostalgia thing going on right now, I think it could work (well maybe not now)!
@garyballard179
@garyballard179 2 жыл бұрын
The third one is a good movie - not a great movie, but a good movie. It's two biggest drawbacks being no Rachel Weisz and director Rob Cohen's elitist tendency to talk down to his audience. It's definitely better than Tom Cruise's reboot. Had it had a director more fitting for an epic adventure film/monster movie, it would've been a great movie even without Weisz.

@garyballard179

@@sahityabk Your expectations are irrelevant. On a technical, measurable level, it _is_ a good movie. It's also a trademark of Rob Cohen - every film he makes is technically solid, yet hampered by his disdain for his audience and a lack of scale. Much like his other films, such as Dragonheart and Daylight, Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor has all the pieces to be a good film but lacks a couple of key elements that could make it something outstanding. It's the fact that it's part of a well-known franchise that irks you. It's a good film, but it's not what _you_ expected. I like Rob Cohen's work, and I know what I'll get from him. So I went into the third movie with a clear understanding of what it would be. _You_ went in expecting a copy/paste of Stephen Sommers' formula. You went in with the wrong idea of what the movie would be, and you hate that it wasn't what you thought it would be.

I think having the subtitles turned on somehow screwed with the subtitles that were in the actual movie. You missed quite a few translations. As people have said before, Imhotep spared Beni because he spoke Hebrew. The "language of the slaves" as the myth goes. And Ardeth Bay, the Maji with the dark hair, says the same string of words several times but the missing subtitles said something different each time. The first one I can't remember verbatim, but it's something along the lines of "the creature remains undiscovered." Then he says "the desert will deal with him." That, I think, is the most accurate translation because sahara means desert. The third time he says the exact same sentence, the subtitles say "this one is strong." I adore this movie despite all of the historical and cultural inaccuracies. It sparked my interest in Egyptian history and mythology. It made me want to learn more. That's a win for any movie, if you ask me.

The part where Benny is trying different religions to save himself, after he speaks Hebrew, the mummy says something to the tune of, 'You speak the language of the slaves. You could be useful. The rewards will be great.' as he proffered the gold trinkets.

So much better than the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot, which was his awful and took itself way too seriously. Stephen Sommers drew inspiration from not only the original 1932 MUMMY, but also called it a cross between "Indiana Jones Meets Jason And The Argonauts or Clash Of The Titans meets The Ten Commandments." Joe Dante, John Landis, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, George Romero, and Wes Craven were all interested in making the Mummy remake, until Sommers was picked after his last film DEEP RISING bombed at the box office. Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise, and Matt Damon were considered for the lead. The movie was a box office success, making $420 million dollars ($700 million dollars today) against a $75 million dollar budget.

The word you were L👀King for Ellie, when you said, "jumpers" is locusts (from more biblical times) or grasshoppers (modern term, at least here in America).

The fun part is that grasshoppers and locusts are the same creature. Locust-mode is formed when too many grasshoppers get together in the same place and begin bumping into each other

@@toddkes5890 Yeah, which is why I said, "locusts (from more biblical times) or grasshoppers (modern term, at least here in America)". The reason for that depiction is really simple. Locusts are a group of certain species of short-horned grasshoppers in the family Acrididae that have a swarming phase. So, and this is an important distinction ... all locusts are grasshoppers, but not all grasshoppers are locusts. Maybe I should have been more clear but, I was pointing out that, when you hear/see old movies, especially religious ones or ones depicting eras from ancient times to say, the 20's-40's, you will hear them often referred to as locusts because they're usually talking to or about places in The Middle East, like in Egypt (Africa), where they cause plagues. However, if you are watching a movie about modern times, or something within the last half century or so, and especially if it is about America, they will most likely use the term grasshopper. There are a lot of reasons for this but, the distinction often comes down to old world vs. modern world. I tried to be succinct, as I tend to get wordy, but I guess it didn't work out as I had hoped. I hope that now, I have rectified that.

Great movie.This is a fun adventure movie. They don't make movies like the anymore . The last fun adventure movie is Prince Of Persia 2010. The Mummy 2 is also a good movie but the third one is horrible. The modern remake with Tom cruz is very different but it is decent and more horror. You should also see Blast from the Past with Brandon Frazer. Also The National Treasure movies.

Great reaction I saw you confused as to why benny was allowed to live is because he was speaking Hebrew. Jewish people were the slaves of the egyptian kings for so long until they ran and spent I believe 40 years in the desert trying to escape when they found their home which I believe became the land of isreal. I'm not fully aware of the story and what happened after the 40 years. And I believe it's memorized with passover. Which I learned is what jesus celebrated as the last supper because he was jewish.
