Lottie is one of the best side characters Disney has ever made. She had everything she could want and she still befriended her seamstress’ daughter, treated her as an equal and still stayed that way into adulthood. She gave her the money for her restaurant and gave up her fairytale dream of marrying a prince so Tia could be happy
@zuko8014

Actually she did not give Tianna the money which is better. Because they have been friends for years and could have bought the place for Tianna but she knows her well enough to know that she wants to earn it herself so she gave her the proper opportunity to earn the money for her restaurant.
@blackkatt777

She hired Tiana's services for an opportunity for herself to snag a man. She didn't GIVE her anything. She didn't count how much she gave her, just grabbed what was in her dad's pocket and shoved it at Tiana. As for giving up her prince...lottie wasn't marrying for love, she was marrying to scratch off a want off her list. Her head was in an entitlement cloud of just getting everything she wanted. The prince had no meaning to her, just his title. She learned an adult lesson about sacrifice and true love by Naveen and Tiana's tragic circumstance. I also think it's suspect that Tiana was the only Disney Princess not in her own skin for the majority of her movie. Idk why you think Lottie deserves extra praise for befriending the child of the seamstress that is always on call to make more fantasy dresses for her. She obviously had no siblings, so of course she played with the only kid around her. During slave times that would be a mandatory thing for the owned slaves to be a friend companion and caterer to the child's needs and wants, as long as the kid stayed out of their parent's way. So making childhood friends with the help isn't a stretch or some woke effort of a child that knows nothing about the world. I am sure Tiana wasn't invited to Lottie's teenage/ young adult high society party gatherings with her other rich friends, so... Lottie cared for her because she grew up with her. Not because she was some fake woke child who rebelled against the injustices of the world. Their childlike innocence was not spoiled by the society of the times, so they maintained their friendship over the years.

@@blackkatt777 nah, she hired Tiana cuz she and her dad knows how good her good tastes. She trusts Tiana just in general to know she’ll make do well on the amount of money she gave to make that much food. And yeah, Lottie is entitled, hence why her giving up one of her wants that she’s wanted since she was a kid is still meaningful. That’s the one thing she always wanted, to be a princess. And she gave it up. You see ppl accusing any movie with a PoC character that transforms as being racist. Considering how steeped in New Orleans culture the movie is, and how she’s literally voiced by a black woman, I think it does enough. I don’t see why this has to do with Lottie so don’t shove in unnecessary stuff. I understand not praising Lottie for befriending the seamstress’ daughter since kids at the age don’t know racism. What is considered good is the fact she maintains that friendship into her adult years. Your “I am sure” Bullshit is just your bias as well. You don’t have evidence, so u make things up to make ur point. That alongside your “turned into an animal” thing is just another person trying to find insult where there is none and trying to be “woke”. As for catering, Tiana didn’t cater. We don’t see little black girl catering to the little white girl whatsoever. As for “she cared cuz they grew up together”. Tell me how many friends or family you’ve remained close to since childhood? If you’re gonna say you’re still close to all of them, which I don’t believe, you’re in the minority. It is admirable she remained friends in that society and just in general. That means Tiana always meant a lot to her for to keep that relationship strong. But sure, go on demonizing the white person. Ppl like you is why others don’t seem to take accusations of racism seriously anymore, they even have to start imagining things up to prove a point. Your headcanons aren’t canon.

@@ma.2089 I'm sure this is your poor attempt to do some reversal victim bs, but I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT LOTTIE BEING RACIST, so you can tuck that bs back into your agenda pocket. Trying so hard to put Lottie on a pedestal while minimizing the protagonist of the movie. I see what that's about. As for the comment on me making up the fact that people were upset about Tiana not being in the majority of the movie....Look it up. You'll see plenty of sites suggested to you. I said Lottie was an only child, so it isn't a stretch to imagine that she would make friends with the daughter of her seamstress that was the same age. Who said anything about cousins and family members? The whole trying to make it sound like it was admirable of Lottie to stay friends with Tiana into adulthood like it was some check box to mark. It isn't hard to stay friends from your childhood if you liked one another and never moved away from each other, you know? No one is vilifying Lottie. They were obviously best friends who were good to each other. Again with that fake victim crap... You tried it. Dismissed.

He wanted to congratulate her for all her hard work as he found out about the restaurant at the breakfast shop. I think if Tiana asked Charlotte for the money or if Charlotte thought Tiana needed extra money she'd give it to her. But Tiana doesn't want to get her restaurant that way. She's both too proud to ask for money and she also feels that if she did that then she wouldn't have earned her happy ending, plus she feels that if she works for it then she'll be honouring her father's memory.

One aspect I will always appreciate this movie for is how accurate they managed to portray the south, especially New Orleans. Being a southerner myself, I've grown so used to movies, TV shows, books, etc. using the stereotype that we're all idiot racists who hate anyone from the north. This movie did not fall back on that. Also, Lotte is the best best friend character Disney has ever made. Notice how when she hears Tiana needs more money she asks her to make a ton of Beignets how she doesn't ask for them for free, but actually pays for them, giving her enough to buy the building she needed. Or how despite loving pink clothing she had a blue dress made that fit Tiana perfectly.

Racism isn't quite so black and white as a lot of people tend to think. History is one of my passions, and if you look into it deep enough, you see that the whole "if you're from a southern state, you're automatically racist, if you're from a northern state, there's no way you can be racist" label doesn't fit. There were a lot of Southern Unionists like Newton Knight, who formed the Knight Company militia comprised of Confederate deserters and runaway slaves to fight the Confederacy from within Mississippi. Then you have Northerners called Copperheads who were supportive of the Confederacy and donated money, arms, clothing and food to them. I've been all over the country, including most of the South. Not once did anyone treat me with racism there.I was bracing myself for it, which I'm ashamed of, but people there just treated me like a person. Oddly enough it was in northern states like New York, Ohio and California where I experienced racism. A lot of creepy looking activists wanted me in their protest up in New York, but I refused and tried to leave, which they then resorted to shouting racial slurs and throwing a milk shake at me (one fat girl with blue hair even said she wished they never let me off the plantation) This happened again in San Francisco when a group of volunteers were cleaning up all the trash on the streets, and we got jumped by ANTIFA. Judge the individual, not where they come from.

The biggest controversy when this film came out was more so that we have a Black princess but her prince was not the same background, Naveen is supposed to be descended from a country that’s an amalgamation of latin countries/Maldives/Macedonia/Italy, some considered him to be a white character, some indigenous latin, some black Latin - whereas he’s likely a combination to keep some of the authenticity of the Brazilian actor who voiced him but with even more ambiguity because the multiple countries used as inspiration (I suppose it shows Maldonja is melting pot country, the influences are so vast that speculation leans towards him even having 🇧🇩 and SEA heritage as well) but I was in high school so I distinctly recall all the criticism of an interracial/multiracial relationship in a Disney film - there were a few ridiculous groups of parents who really tore into it. The issue of keeping more characters of color human got a revival with Soul but there were some people back then who were upset that a black character and ambiguous character (regardless of his race) spend majority of their film as frogs but in the last two years that debate has gotten much more intense than it was in ‘09. Then we more so had parents of multiple backgrounds complaining that this could potentially “confuse” their children, just over a decade ago but I wasn’t shocked then - tbh wouldn’t be shocked if the same debate happened now.

This is one of my absolute favorites. My brother let me name his daughter, and I named her Tiana because I told him that she'll have a name of a Disney Princess that looks like her. Representation counts. Needless to say, she's been sucked into the Frozen stuff. Disney doesn't even have any Disney Tiana stuff available for people to buy. They don't promote all of their princesses like they should. I do remember there being a controversy about this movie. That the animators deciding to have the black princess be a frog for the majority of the movie instead of in her own skin was an issue. It didn't sit well with a lot of movie goers from my community. The argument was that absolutely none of the other Disney Princesses were ever transformed into something and had to be that for most of their movies, except Tiana. Why? But I digress. This is one of the most hilarious and fun movies they've done. Suspectful controversy aside, this movie's animation was beautiful and the score and soundtrack is one of the best modern disney ones out there. Imo. Did you guys notice how many other animated movie references they made at the costume ball? Little mermaid, Hercules, Captain hook from Peter Pan, Toy Story and I think a few others. Can't remember.

The Disney princesses of colour are usually set in times where their social standings and expectations are directly linked to the story but can still reach a "happy" conclusion. (Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine, etc...) They can't be too modern because fairy tales are meant to be an escape but still usually a setting we know. Maybe to make the conflict feel more concrete? Make the character's world more immersive? IDK. Also the animation in this movie has such a shine. The eyes, the water, the magic all have this reflective quality... like Jello :)

Tiana and Charlotte, despite being LITERALLY at opposite ends of the economic scale, with Tiana being poor and Charlotte being rich, they are still the best of friends through Charlotte's father's association with Tiana's mother's profession as a seamstress, and his daughter loving her dresses. That point brings us to... 2. Charlotte getting spoiled like that isn't just because her daddy's rich and can afford it. It's because Charlotte's mother's obviously dead (a Disney thing) and her father's trying to do his best to see that his baby girl gets everything she could ever want as compensation for the absence of her mother in her life. Despite this, however, she grows up to be a wonderful friend to Tiana, wanting the best for her as well as herself. The Second Scene is very heartwarming. 1. It shows the down-to-earth and very homey community and her family and neighbors share a very tight bond. 2. Tiana's relationship with her father, in particular, is very special. Most little girls need that kind of connection with their daddy. 3. That part about the evening star only taking you part of the way is a very realistic way of looking at goals you want to attain in life. It even extends to things like magic. Unlike Facilier's voodoo, real magic that Wiccans, Neo-Pagans, and even Satanists do is based on a half-way system. You can do a spell and reaffirm it with affirmations about repeating how you want something, but unless you actively go out there and work for that, it won't happen. The Third Scene is the most telling despite it being short. 1. Tiana is now around twenty or so, has a job as a waitress (given her uniform), and she's working to save up money for her own restaurant everyday from the tips she makes. 2. Her father's picture is on her vanity. He's dressed in a WWI uniform and hanging off of it is a war medal of some kind. Given that the rest of this movie takes place in 1920, it's obvious that her father was drafted to fight for America in WWI against Germany and got killed in action. All of this information in just three scenes. This movie is DENSE with stuff like this, if you know where to look.

Theres a lot of animation references in this movie. When Louie peeks through the tree leaves, pulling them aside like hair, its almost identical to the witch from Sword in the Stone. During Dig A Little Deeper the way Tiana is dancing is a reference to a dancing model they reused in early Disney animation, some examples are Maid Marian in Robin Hood and Duchess in Aristocats. Also the way they transform back into humans at the end is very similar to the way Odette transforms from swan and back in The Swan Princess, though it is not actually Disney.

A small note of interest: you seen the medal hanging from the picture of Tiana's dad? Well, that just happens to be the freakin' Distinguished Service Cross - the second highest decoration a soldier can EVER receive. And a black man got it in a period when racism was very much a thing. No idea what he did, but it must have been something WAY beyond impressive.

I absolutely love this movie. I was still pretty young when it came out, about 8 or 9. I’m from southern Louisiana and grew up with Cajun culture. The gumbo, the music, Mardi Gras, the voodoo etc. are all things I grew up with and it was just so magical to see it being put in a Disney movie. Years later and it’s still one of my favorites.

YES, Charlotte is a good friend and a nice person. Ive seen people wonder why Tiana just doesn't get a loan from Charlotte. People forget eventhough her father would pay for anything she wants, it's not Charlotte's money, BUT HER FATHERS. He's a business man who is fairly wealthy. Back then especially in the business industry, it's not good for business to give money just because you were friends with their mother, especially with rates that we all know they prob couldn't downright afford or pay off in a timely matter. Not to mention that it would seem like they would be leeching off of Big Daddy and risk loosing the friendly relationship they have going on. It's too risky, so it would be an automatic no. Not to mention that you don't want to get technical in a kids movie talking about things like loans, so to simplify they have Tiana using all of her own money to pay for it.

When you look at the movie, it takes place in the 1920s in New Orleans. Charlotte is an AMAZING friend. She was spoiled rotten but never mistreated her best friend and catetaker/seamstress (tianas mother). The reason why tiana never outright asked lottie for money was because she wouldn't except it without working for it and lottie couldn't offer it. It was frowned upon during those times. Segregation was still new. That's why the realtors said the things they did. I have tried southern food. I LIVE in New Orleans and I home cook.

If anyone wants to watch anything else set in New Orleans, I cannot recommend the HBO tv series 'Treme' enough - starts a few months after Hurricane Katrina. Fair amount of depressing stuff in it (in the face of trying to rebuild the city there's despair, corruption, greed, and indifference) but the show also has a lot of music, food, laughter, joy, celebration, dancing and little moments of triumph in the face of all the sadness a hurricane and flood can bring. The music if fantastic - even if you don't like genre of music you'll enjoy watching it be performed. Got a lot of guest stars playing themselves as well.

This is by far my favorite princess film. Tiana is my favorite princess, main character, human, and frog. Lottie is genuinely the best friend and reminds me a lot of Elle Woods. Tiana’s mom and dad are perfect. Naveen is swoon worthy and learns to be less shallow. Louis is so endearing and wholesome and fun. Ray is iconic. Facilier is a great and intimidating villain. Mama Odie is hilarious and wise. The setting and the music are phenomenal. Mostly, it’s about dreaming and working hard, but also living in the moment and being grateful for what you have. That’s such an underrated theme and it’s executed so well in the through-line of the story.
