My god this was an amazing movie! I am happy I was able to experience this movie for the first time with you all! I love movies like Training Day because they make you think deeply, and bring up uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke are amazing in this and what a nice surprise to see Cliff Curtis and Tuco from Breaking Bad. Hope you all stick around for the discussion in the end. This movie brought up some really deep stuff that needed to be talked about!

I meant to say SCAR and the hyenas from The Lion King lol. I want to add something to make myself very clear. When I brought up gangs and them protecting the neighborhoods. This was something that used to be done. The reason gangs were created was to protect the people. However this has obviously changed and there is needless murder and death and other horrific things that go on in gangs. In no way am I condoning gangs or gang violence. And to those affected by gang violence I am truly sorry. I wish people could work together and stop fighting each other for petty reasons. We are all more alike than we know and as I said in this reaction. Why do we have to either be a wolf or a sheep? Why can’t we be a shepherd.

Speaking about the Police being a gang, look up Los Banditos. The East La(where I lived all my life) Sherriff's got exposed as a real gang. Not only were they corrupt, they would force the female officers to do sexual acts. There were over 20 officers that were exposed and just recently more has been uncovered.

As someone who's been held at gunpoint by both local cops and local gangsters, I can whole heartedly say gangs dont protect the neighborhood either. Especially since younger and younger people get into gangs and become more reckless to impress ogs. Just before the pandemic I was walking home with food for my mom and was robbed by an armed teenager while the big dog waited in the truck. Before that, I was arrested for smoking in a car and the cops raided my apt because the outside looked like a crack house. They were dissapointed when all they found were comics, Pops and Anime statues. I get why you hate LA

I’m sorry that’s happened to you and so many other people. I’m in no way defending gang members. But I understand why gangs were created in the first place. Doesn’t mean things are the same anymore at all though.

@@Dannydarko27I am extremely sorry that happened to you, but from my experience I've actually seen gangs stand up for the neighborhood they were in. Helping the people as well and sticking up for them, and ofc they were gangs so there as occasional shooting where I lived but afterwards they always did go door to door seeing if people were OK. Not trying to make them out to be heroes or anything because people still didn't like them and they most of the time never really made it easier. I was still poor and scared but they grew up in that neighborhood and they respected it and I could see that to an extent, so when I saw this movie I actually remember that neighborhood especially at the last few scenes of the movie. Some gang members even spoke to me in a kind manner telling me not to choose the path they chose because they were born into it. This wasn't saying you were wrong or all gangs are good I was just giving my personal childhood experiences. Once again though I am sorry you went through that

@@renzuassassin3724 all the teenagers shooting others teenagers in the hood or girl moms been gang assaulted sexually but those are rarely talked about but by no means rare happened, protections from others came at a cost always you are substituting violence and terror with a different violence and terror or pay us

Yea I was a little unsure about that statement from Imon as well, but when you think about it, it's true in some regards. For example, the people who robbed you may not necessarily live on your block/street or even neighborhood. But if there was a rival gang on your block that saw this gang in your neighborhood it might have deterred the people who ended up robbing you. There is no black and white.

"Why does he look like Malcolm X?" He actually played Malcolm X in Spike Lee's 1992 film. Alonzo knows full well that he's not respected, nor does he doesn't respect them. He even calls them busters. But he's a cop and he's connected, so he thinks he's untouchable.

Alonzo was so evil. If you go back to after the raid on Roger's house, when Jake was waiting outside the car, Alonzo walks over and gets inside. If you listen closely, you can hear him say on his cell, "yeah, just make sure that bathtub's clean". Savage!!

"Remember that fool in the wheelchair? How do you think he got there?" That's one of the quotes that made me realize that there's levels to this movie that I had to rewatch to get. So many connections & ah-ha moments

There's tons. Some that come to mind in no particular order: 1) When Smiley shows a police issue Beretta. "You mean like this one?" which implies that Alonzo might have had them kill another cop prior. 2) The attempted rape victim mentions "Hillside Trece" and Sniper has a "Hillside" tattoo on his back. 3) "They got beatdown, they lost their rock and their money, and those eses from Hillside are probably going to smoke them." Alonzo gets beatdown, loses his badge and his money, and those Russians smoked him. 4) Jake carrying the money to pay for his own murder.

How Alonzo was a improviser. He tells Jake to grab menu on car using it later as a fake warrant. He goes over Rogers's house & ask him in a subtle way what he was doing later. If Roger wasn't going to be there does Alonzo still rob him or does he have someone else he can Rob (remember he's improvising). He goes after Snoop to for Sandman. What if Snoop stayed home that day. He finds someone else or the kids he robs to get there drugs. Finally when Jake saves the girl he asks her who her people are. Instantly Alonzo knows who they are & right then & there decides if I have to kill Jake that's who I will use never knowing he got the wallet. When Alonzo finally decides he has to kill Jake his last plea is please take the money which he didn't. He even tried to improvise when Jake breaks into his house. "Congratulations you passed the test" lol

"Flipping Pigeons" is what you saw Terry Crews doing; which is basically what they do in the neighborhood to signal everyone that the police are coming through.

The snail analogy is about how a minor transgression you did a year ago that you forgot might be a major event to the other party, who comes back looking for beef. It'll find you when you're off guard. The moral is to not set aggression in motion on the streets when you're out there every day

Although the details of the story are fictional Denzel's character and look were based on a real-life, notoriously-crooked LAPD cop, Rafael (Ray) Perez, who was involved in all sorts of shady stuff in the early '90s (e.g., drug-dealing, bad shootings, fabricated evidence) and eventually got busted.

I was a real punk when i was a kid, and always back-talking to police. I realized once i got older... When u get pulled over if u follow the rules and show respect, your odds of having a better interaction increase SIGNIFICANTLY! I have been let out of MANY tickets and also had WAAAY more positive interactions with police. Nobody EVER gets shot when u follow their directions! Its always someone running away or whatever. If u have illegal guns or substances, U KNOW its illegal. So when u get pulled over TAKE YOUR MEDICINE. You got caught. Period. If u try to run, BAD THINGS are going to happen!!!!! Sadly younger people arent taught, or are too egotistical to follow the rules like putting your hands on the wheel when the police approach your car, and speak calm and respectful. People dont realize every cop is frightened when they pull someone over. You never know what kind of person is in the car, their attitude, if they have a gun, or drugs, etc etc etc. Every cop just wants to go home alive every single night. Its not an easy job

Thing is is that there are known instances where people ARE giving the respect you’re talking about and they still get harassed and/or assaulted, or in some cases people are harassed/assaulted before they could even have the chance to react. You may be right about cops being afraid when they pull someone over, but the same applies for the person who’s under that cops power when they’re getting pulled over. Now you have 2 people who are both afraid engaging with each other. Your individual experiences doesn’t apply to all people. Certain people, in certain places are going to get harassed no matter much respect they give, some people are aware of this and that’s why they don’t bother giving respect when they’re being confronted. Also just a side note - no one is obligated to give respect to a stranger no matter what their occupation is. You’re right. Cops have no idea what kind of person they’re engaging with, and they do want to make it home safe. But that applies to ALL people. All people want to make it home safe. Hypothetically, how do I know the cop that’s pulling me over isn’t an evil person with a badge who’s intention are harmful to me?

most of the time that is true but there are some real racist monsters in the police forces especially in small towns in the deep south like here in Florida where I live. They are the minority in the police forces. I have had the cops get called on me because of a heated 'situation' i got into. The cops that were responding to the call knew I was a military vet that was having a PTSD episode. But I had calmed down by the time they arrived. They had a gun pulled on me pointed right at my head. It wasnt a big deal to me I just wondered how likely a mistake could have happened that ended with me getting a bullet to the head. I also have read about people who take prescription medicine that is habit forming for years like Xanax getting arrested and not having access to their meds in jail because the cops dont care so the person ends up dying of a seizure. This again is more common in certain small town in the south. Police departments in major metropolitan areas have you medically examinated if you need any medication like if you're HIV positive and need meds.

Its not in this reaction video but the line when Jake and Alonzo are in the car and Jake says "It can't be like this" is so heartbreaking. That everything you thought about helping people and making your community a better place is a lie and that realization makes you feel so small. As unrealistic as it is for Jake to remain an idealist when confronted with this knowledge of how narcotics officers operate, he knows he has to remain true to his morals and stand his ground against corruption (Alonzo).

In the scene where Denzel killed Roger, the fact Denzel is in the dark but his eyes are showing is a cinematic view that Alonzo represents evil, while Jake is in the light shows that his character represents good, and it foreshadows the climax at the end of the movie, hence the monologue Alonzo tells Jake when he threatens him

Ethan hawke has a line in the first scene of the movie “you should see those guys houses.” In reference to detectives, that perspective on his professional ambition combined with this loyalty and commitment to his family informs his later inner conflict with Alonzo and his various collisions with ethical practice and decision making. He knows they’re doing wrong but his ambition keeps him from waking away.

the first thing Alonzo asks on that first scene morning phone call was "you got a backup gun?". it almosy sounds like he is looking out for the rookie, but its most obvious that he was asking for his own tactical awareness.

It's a shame you already knew he's corrupt from the start since that's the most interesting part of the movie imo. How Denzel's performance kept Alonzo perfectly on the line so you're not sure whether he's good or bad until the reveal.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time but it was great seeing it again thru your perspective. It's amazing how much of Hoyt's life changed in one day and if not for that ONE choice he made to save that girl, his life would be over. You gave a great analysis of the movie and I think you broke down Denzel's character to a T! Denzel killed it. Can't wait to see what you watch next.

Even more interestingly, Alonzo spoke to the girl in the alley and knew which family she was connected with. He purposefully chose that house as it'd be an ironic punishment of Hoyt's naivety to have him killed by the family of the girl he saved. But that same naivety, as perceived by Alonzo, is also what saves Hoyt's life. Battle between two outlooks, good wins.

The director Antwon Fuqua said yrs ago that Denzels character started out the same way as you said, wanting to make a difference. But pushing the line of the law further down, bending rules here and there lead to making his own rules. It eventually swallowed him up, til he became what he was supposed protect ppl from. That's why many things & advice he said to Jake had truth in it, he was Jake long time ago. Now he's one of the Wolves. Denzel simply said his character " Alonzo had to die, the wages of sin is death". With the way he lived, no way he should live by going to prison. This was Denzel playing a true villain for the 1st time, he's so good, he actually made me hate a character he's playing.

The way both of their days ended hinged largely on how they'd treated the people they encountered throughout that day. For instance If jake doesn't rescue that girl earlier in the day then he probably doesn't walk away from that bathroom scene. And on the other side Lonzo's bad rep left him with absolutely nowhere to run when it all came crashing down

While you are right that gangs do start out as protectors of their neighborhood, history has shown that at some point early on in each gang's history the lightbulb goes on for someone at the top of the hierarchy and they say "cool, but we can probably make some money with this by (insert criminal enterprise here)." Good reaction, you brought up a few things that I hadn't thought of in all my times seeing this movie.

Aye Imon, I recognize you trying to better yourself. Its commendable, inspiring even. Don't forget to close your eyes... Go inside... And just watch how your vessel... moves, breaths, scrunches up its face and hold that perspective, a few minutes each day. It helps. Also, You'll find gems o' plenty in the inspirational comedy I HEART HUCKABEES

The point of the movie that alot of people missed was that Alonzo actually originally was just like Jake, he was corrupted over time, but he did see himself In Jake, and he wanted him in his unit, however Jake's unwillingness to take the money, made Alonzo feel like he couldn't be trusted, so he set things in motion to kill him

The pigeons are raised to fly locally and eventually return back home immediately. Once the guys (dealers) on the ground see the flock flying around they are instantly alerted to an almost guaranteed police presence.

The simple thing about Alonzo's metaphor about how the cops have to be wolves to fight off criminal wolves is that as far as a civilian and society are concerned, they're stuck with a wolf either way. Once the wolf gets hungry it won't matter that it was originally supposed to be "your" wolf, it'll turn on you regardless and eat you. That's always been the simple downfall of the "we have to be just as bad as the criminal and have no rules in order to fight them" BS.

Very good screenplay. Narratively satisfying that the differences between our two leads which form the basis of the movie's conflict (Alonzo, perhaps once innocent like Hoyt, has been poisoned and corrupted by the system he works for - Hoyt on the other hand refuses to make the damning choices that would lead him down Alonzo's road) are ultimately what decide the movie's conclusion. Alonzo isn't just beaten because Hoyt can talk or fight his way out of the bathroom at the end or something, he's beaten because Hoyt saved a person earlier in the day (the only real good deed performed by either men during the movie). And deeper than that, Alonzo and Hoyt didn't just randomly wind up at that house: Alonzo talked to the girl in the alley earlier in the movie and knew which family she was connected with. He purposefully tried to have Hoyt killed by the family of the girl he'd saved, because he needs to punish Hoyt's naivety and refusal to be corrupted. Their conflicting ideologies and outlooks are ultimately what are really in conflict, not the men themselves, and in the end good wins. Wish it were more like that in real life sometimes, but oh well - fantastic movie.

@@themingler441That's true. But given that our protagonist was earlier that same night about to be executed in a bathtub and instead it was a corrupt cop who was killed - we'll call that a win. I have a feeling in the universe of Training Day you got to take the wins you can find.

At first I was like imon damn u missing classics however viewing things as an adult with fresh eyes can be seen as seeing it for the first time me watching this when I was 8 was not the same as me seeing it when I was 18 so I agree.

Great reaction! Another awesome movie that is kind of similar to this that you need to check out is "Street Kings" with Keanu Reeves and Forrest Whitaker. One intense film!

It was a nice surprise seeing him here, as we had just recently watched the movie Once Were Warriors, and was blown away by the movie and his and the whole casts acting!

Amazoz has a cool scratch off poster called 100 movies and it's a great list. IMDB also has lists of movies according to ratings so you can find all the fan favorites. The 90s had some of the best movies out there so I can't wait to see what you choose. A tip from a friend of mine is to follow the director. I'd recommend Danny Boyle, Edgar Wright, and Tony Scott.
