What's so unusual about this story is both the protagonist and the antagonist get what they want in the end. It shows the true nature of abusive relationships, the pursuit of absolute perfection, and the heavy costs that come with it. A masterpiece, in my opinion--though I might be biased since I myself am a professional musician with pathologically perfectionistic traits... 👀

@Tic Toc Melody Let's be honest guys, how many people gave two craps about drumming before this movie. I never saw the potential in it and as someone who doesn't live and breathe music or drumming specifically, it was an epic film. If you're trying to tear it down because you think you're above it at the expense of damaging the woder perception of your chosen field, I'd question exactly how much you really care about drumming or music. You just seem like you think you're about it all, and if you're not the next Charlie Parker I'd say SHUT UP AND CHANGE WHIPLASH'S PAGES BITCH 🤣

"There are no two words in the English language more harmful than: good job" I slightly disagree. I would add "unearned" in between "two words" in that sentence and that would be my philosophy. Fun Fact: The film was shot in 19 days. Drummer Boy Fact: Miles Teller, who has played the drums since he was 15, received blisters on his hands due to the vigorous, unconventional style of jazz drumming. Some of his blood was on the drumsticks and the drum set as a result. During the more intense practice scenes, the director wouldn't yell "cut!" so that Miles Teller would keep drumming until he exhausted himself. Landing Blows Fact: For the slapping scene, J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller filmed several takes with Simmons only miming the slap. For the final take, Simmons and Teller decided to film the scene with a real, genuine slap. This is the take that is in the film. J.K. Simmons suffered two cracked ribs when Miles Teller tackled him during the last two days of shooting. Simmons managed to continue working despite his injury.

Even if the good job was earned, saying "good job" runs the risk of giving the performer permission to stop improving, to stop aiming for higher and still higher goals, to be content with basking in the glory of past and present achievements. Apathy is slow death. And wow! I didn't know that Miles Teller actually accidentally broke J.K. Simmons' ribs! I would be absolutely mortified if I had done that in the middle of a scene.

I'm with your friends, also one of my favorites ever. It can interpreted different ways, but I view it as a tragedy. Andrew gave up everything he had, his family, his girlfriend, his physical well-being, his sanity to appease Fletcher and, admittedly, become one of the greats. You can see on his father's face during the last performance, the horror of seeing his son become an unquenchable musical monster. Andrew, in my mind, will likely become remembered as one of the greatest drummers of the time, that died of a heroin overdose in his late 30s.

my film college course involved writing a dissertation on how this movie presents toxic masculinity and honestly I could write for hours, the director and actors did such an amazing job. The abuser won, and Andrew will probably end up dying as an addict younger than thirty like he said, and yet that was what he wanted if he was to be remembered; they both got what they wanted.

Great reaction, bud! ♥ I watched this film about 5 times when it was released. If you have the slightest interest in cooking or learning to, you would probably like the series Hell's Kitchen with Gordon Ramsay. They strive for excellence in it as they did in this film. The abuse is about the same too. 👍 29:20 Clint Eastwood directed a biopic about Charlie 'Bird' Parker, he is played by Forest Whitaker. It is a fresh tomato rating on RT. Bird (1988).

Sad truth - you don't become great by sitting on a couch and getting bit by a radioactive spider or by having rich parents. Talent or chance alone are not enough, these are fairy tales for the babies. The only way is hard work, patience and dedication. The novel "Ender's game" by Orson Scott Card has same subtheme - "your teacher must be your enemy because only your enemy will show you where you're weak and where he is strong". 2013 movie sucks, but the book is superb. The only other thing that made me feel physically exhausted like Whiplash was "The Long Walk" by Stephen King.

Such a vapid Fox News take. You can read articles back from the 1910's about how the young generation is "soft", and Roman senators like Cicero claiming the exact same thing. You're just old and instead of better articulation you want abuse for 99% on the false pretense that *maybe* it results in a prodigy. Prodigy happens regardless, it doesn't take abuse to create.
