Be sure to eventually check out "Romancing The Stone" (1984), "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988), "Death Becomes Her" (1992), "Forrest Gump" (1994), "Contact" (1997), "Castaway" (2000) and "Polar Express" (2004).

Yeah, even MY reaction, when this CAME OUT, (and i was born in 81), to Biff complaining about a "blind spot", was the same as yours. I'd say it's not about Lorraine having never met a dude like Marty before in her life...so much as Lorraine was basically lying when she told her kids (hey! Marty, too!) that she never did that sort of thing. Protecting her image in their eyes, maybe.
@juhno7659
@juhno7659 2 жыл бұрын
Could be lying, could be her "protecting" her kids from also following the same path. She most likely got raped by Biff and potentially got raped more even after marrying George who never stood up for himself or her. She clearly was not happy with her life with George initially
@josephsoltero7326
@josephsoltero7326 Жыл бұрын
I also think she had self-confidence issues back then. Maybe that's why she drank, smoked, and partied with other guys, and then lied about it later on because she was ashamed. The look she gives George when he saves her is one that practically screams: "Wow, someone actually believes I'm worth fighting for."

Not every reactor gets the detail with the change from "Twin Pines Mall" to "Lone Pines Mall". Good job :-) From today's point of view it seems a bit strange, that back in the first half of the 80s loud rock music was some kind of a red flag for some people. I remember a summer camp where we had some kind of a party on the last evening. Me and some other friends were into hard rock, and we asked the dj, if he could bring some more rock sound, which he promised. But only after just one song from Def Leppard the teachers stopped "this dangerous situation". Skateboards were actually invented around the 50s. And one joke the younger people often don't understand: Marvin Berry calls his cousin Chuck Berry to let him hear "Johnny B. Goode" (which is written by Chuck Berry).

If you haven’t seen it, check it out. Another good one is Rivers Edge. The actor who plays George McFly is in it and a very young Keanu Reeves. That story is very dark but so freaking powerful! Man, I remember the first time I watched this movie as a kid. My dad bought us the DVD, and I didn't want to watch it because it was live-action (I only liked animated movies back then. For some reason, most of live-action movies scared me lol), but I loved it. I remember having goosebumps when Doc pulled out the letter. As for the ranking, I think everyone, me included, pretty much agrees the first one is the best (not that 2 and 3 are bad or anything). Personally, I like the 3rd one overall slightly better than the 2nd one, but Part two has my favourite final act out of the three, although this one is a very close second. Glad you're watching these, and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Loved your reaction! You're right about the writing -- Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale wrote scripts that are like finely crafted machinery, with each part fitting in smoothly at just the right point, and the whole thing working in an incredibly satisfying way. All 3 movies in the series are good; which one you prefer is a matter of taste. Marty's mom was clearly lying at the start, saying she never did "those things" with a boy -- what parents always do with their kids, pretend they never had wild or reckless moments in their youth.

Yeah, a great story about the transformation of a teenager's family. Absolutely no fluff in this move. i.e. There were no extraneous scenes. Every segment reinforced the characters and progressed the plot. Everything that was setup in the opening act had a satisfying payoff throughout the movie. They didn't treat time travel as a gimmick but as a well-defined means of creating that Spielbergian suspense. Everything had to go wrong and we get that huge hit of dopamine when they finally make it with one second left. Simple but effective movie making. Imaging trying to sell this story to a studio; there's absolutely no way anyone would think this would work on paper but they executed it so beautifully that it became a huge success.

It kills me that you’re half my age haha. I can’t be that old. I love your reactions. I grew up on this movie. So in the ‘80s, in a lot of places teachers could still use corporal punishment! So it wasn’t strange to us when Marty gets manhandled. That guy would be fired today. About whether or not what happens in the past had always happened: that’s called a bootstrap paradox. That’s the way time travel is in Potter like you said, what happened always had happened. But there are some theoretical issues with that. The way time travel is depicted across the three Back to the Future movies is the more theoretically accepted, straightforward approach. If you change things, you create an alternate timeline. Ronald Reagan was an actor in old westerns before becoming governor of California and then president. We in California seem to love electing actors (like Schwarzenegger). And it’s implied that Doc paid that cop off, lol

The actor who played Marty's dad is named "Crispin Glover" now 57, who in the last decade has been in such films like Alice in Wonderland, Hot Tub Time Machine, By the Rivers of Babylon, and the 2015 mini series Texas Rising, also back in the 1950s bars of soap were usually delivered to small drug stores in wooden crates "soap boxes" and after delivery they just threw the boxes out and the local kids grabbed them to make these wooden up right push carts or scooters with old skate wheels, which later changed to small wooden push cars and then to official soap box racers, which are still held to this day, but the cars are now mostly fiberglass and steel but still called "soap box racers".....

I'm in my 40's and I remember going to see this in the theatre with my sister and a family friend of ours (I think I was maybe 12?) and it made such a huge impression on me that I've never forgotten the experience. I remember the three of us walking out of the theatre, still laughing and quoting parts of the movie over and over again. "One point 21 jigawatts!"... "What the hell is a jigawatt?" and "Think, McFly, think..." and "There's that word again, 'heavy'... is there something wrong with the earth's gravitational pull in the future?" Lol. It's really fun to rewatch as well because you'll catch things you didn't notice the first time around. Why not just fix that problem when (or before) it happens instead? Like, what was the plan? Go into the future, fix the problem and then go back to the time before you fixed it? Asking good questions: 1.) What happened to the cop asking for Doc's permit? We find out in a deleted scene that Doc just bribed him to go away. That's why he got his wallet when he said he had a permit. 2.) Wouldn't Marty's parents recognize him in the future? In the screenplay for the originally planned sequel, Marty goes back to 1967. Lorraine mentions he reminds her of the Marty/Calvin she knew, but claims "he was taller." The idea is, they had a somewhat larger than life memory of Marty and so they wouldn't recognize him if he was standing in front of them twelve years later.

1. The cranky principal also played the Air Boss in Top Gun. 2. The guy that say's "You're just 's too damn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of Rock-n-roll). 3. The guy that says "It's too loud" is Huey Lewis {Power of Love} 4. Eric Stoltz was supposed to play Marty. Thankfully, we got much better for the gig. 5. If you want a first time/share of an OUTSTANDING movie where Christopher Lloyd plays a bad guy you must do "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". 6. The next one is the best of the hat-trick.

The first act of this movie is perfect. They have the viewer take in all this information that pays off later. Plutonium, Goldie Wilson, the clock tower, how his parents met, Twin Pines, how Doc invented the Flux Capacitor. And the climax is countdowns within countdowns.

Something that always strikes me about this is that everyone seems to think that Biff got his comeuppance at the end of the movie. I look at it a little differently - the guy is running his own business and that's not nothing. I like to think it's actually kind of a happy ending for Biff too.

It's funny you keep mentioning Jim Carrey though Christopher Lloyd was in Taxi and the stoner cab driver, and this came out in 1985. Jim's big break came on a show called Living Color which was a variety show kind of like Saturday Night Live. That show did not come out until the early 90's so if anything, Jim was inspired by Christophers talent

Plutonium is used in nuclear weapons. Reagan was an actor in the 40s and 50s. Star Trek was a TV show in the 60s. Star Wars was released in 1977. The song Marty played at the dance, Johnny be good, was released in 1958 by Chuck Berry. Supposedly he was the one the musicians called to hear the new sound.

As someone who grew up in the1950's and saw this movie when it first came out, I really REALLY appreciated all the nuances of 1955 they captured (and it took seeing the movie to remind me). When the mother says "shush, no one has two tv's," it hit me between the eyes. In the early days of television, it was simply inconceivable, no matter how rich you were, to have more than one tv. (Odd, but true.) Ronald Regan was a B movie actor at the time he won governorship of CA in the '70's. (The 1955 theater marquee is listing a movie he made back then.) It was a real shock when he won the presidency in 1980. The other people Doc. Brown asks about as part of this were well-known actors. Jerry Lewis played a goofy whinny jerk. Jack Benny was best known for being stingy. Classic joke: Robber holds Benny up and demands "your money or your life." Moment of silence. Robber asks "well?" Benny replies "I'm thinking, I'm thinking." In the 1950's, the civil rights movement was in its infancy. (Brown v. Board of Education which desegregated public schools was decided only the year before.) The idea of a Black mayor was still inconceivable in '55. (As was the idea of a Black president was inconceivable in '85, and of course, the writers couldn't predict that it had happened by 2015.) The 1980's were the nadir of downtowns everywhere, with all business and the life of the community shifted to the malls. The 1985 version of Hill Valley had abandoned stores, and marginal business like adult theaters. Mothers used to write the name of their kids on their underwear, always white. In 1950's, the idea of a future atomic war was considered only a matter of when, not if. Also atomic-powered planes and trains. Plutonium is man-made radioactive fuel (and highly poisonous), used for nuclear reactors and bombs. No natural source. Children made scooters by cutting a roller skate in half, attaching the two pieces to a board, with a wooden crate ("soapbox") to hold onto. Skateboards were invented c. 1950's in California as a dry-land version of surfing (so Marty could very well have invented it). The 1936 movie "Reefer Madness" set the public attitude toward marijuana for decades to follow. (Extremely hilarious to watch now as the dangers and effects were so overblown.) In the parking lot scene, the one guy says "we don't want to mess with any reefer ADDICTS." Movies in the 1940's often had the heroes perform top-40's music to natives in some far off island, and the music is instantly popular. In this movie, when Marty goes heavy metal at the end of his performance, the audience is stunned (as is the case when a new genre of music is first heard, from Beethoven to ragtime, jazz, big band, the rock). Johnnie Be Good was just a bit more novel to the teenagers at the time, but not Van Halen. This movie was a refreshing bit of reality here. Yes, gas stations really did have a bunch of uniformed attendants who came out to service your car. Biff is portrayed as a dunce because the well-known saying was "why don't you make like a tree and LEAVE/leaf."

No one would have thought to own two TVs, not because they were expensive, but because it wouldn't have occurred to them to even bother. You can only watch one at a time, and the same programs are on both of them! Reagan entered politics first by becoming the president of the Screen Actors' Guild (the actors' labor union). It's only natural that politicians of a particular state would come out of the prominent industries of that state, such as the movie industry in California. It wasn't all that shocking that he was elected president after the disastrous term of Carter and the Iran hostage crisis. The idea of a black president was perfectly acceptable in 1985. Martin Luther King predicted in the 60's that there would be one within 50 years - and he turned out to be right.

i'll fill u in on a few things without too many spoilers: Marty McFly comes from an Irish-American family who immigrated to America (exactly when you learn about later in the trilogy) and Marty is the youngest son in the family who is a decent guy but he does have a certain weakness that is addressed in Part 2 Dr Emmett Brown is a scientist who was originally from a wealthy German family called the Von Braun Family, they immigrated to America sometime after the McFly's...but the exact date i can't remember. Needless to say he squandered most of the wealth of his family building the DeLorian Time Machine. plutonium is a rather dangerous radioactive chemical that in 1985 (the year this is set) wouldn't be easy to get hold of and well...in the past...near impossible to get a hold of. what lorraine has for Marty in 1955 is called florence nightingale effect...it's where a nurse feels sorry for the person they are taking care of and falls in love with them...and it has been known to happen in real life many times.

I didn’t notice anyone point this out. At the try out for the talent show is actually Huey Lewis, it’s HIS song they’re playing. It was a real treat for us back then because that was unheard of at the time. If I may suggest some classics from 70-90’s you owe it to yourself to see. Gotta see all the Mel Brooks films. Just be prepared to be a bit shocked, possibly offended. Thing were different back in the 70’s, people had much more of a sense of humor about themselves. Before you watch his movie Dpace Balls, a parody of 1977’s Star Wars. You’ll really want to see that Star Wars movie first to fully appreciate it. The following are not Brooks but great movies. Maybe check out a preview to see if there are any your interested in. Animal House (1978) Blues Brothers (1980) Flatliners (1990) All-Star cast wow Princess Bride (Dudes love it too) Who Framed Roger Rabbit Ghostbusters (1984) Indiana Jones series (2nd one 👎🏻) A very overlooked film is Dick Tracy (1990) Superstar cast Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Madonna... it’s visually amazing. Or, at least at the time it was. It was the first movie that really felt like a comic book to me. Some say Batman does, but I think Dick Tracy did it way better.

Really cool reaction. It was awesome seeing you have so much fun with this. I'm so glad I got to see this as a kid, brings back so much nostalgia. And yes, this film is extremely well written. A lot of older films, especially in the 90s, were well made and a lot of fun. Jurassic Park and even Jumanji (Robin Williams) had a lot more depth than films today. By the way, since you seem to react to TV shows more than films, it would be cool to see you react to 'Breaking Bad' if you haven't seen it :)
