Yes!! I was in kindergarten and VIVIDLY remember being seated in front of one of those old TV.s on wheels as a class to watch the debut of this on television ❤🌍 Man, what better days brother. 💔 (the unity, obviously not the famine in Africa) Soooo much magic that can never and sadly will never be recreated because (excuse the 🧀)....we STILL are the world and the *choices* we are makin are disgusting 🥺

@@roumifyouwnt2 Sadly I was only 3, so I was too young to remember it at the time, but I did listen to it throughout the 80s. My family was in Berlin at the time (when the wall was still up), so I do wonder if my family heard it when it first aired.

Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen, the duet we never knew we needed! Their last part were recorded a little later. Quincy realized they needed a few more minutes to fill out the song and Stevie and Bruce were the closest to the recording studio, so they came back and did that part. If you pay close attention you will notice that SW has on a different shirt altogether.

Great reaction. Some info. Quincy Jones put a sign up that said "check your ego at the door" and everyone did. Michael Jackson & Lionel Ritchie wrote the song. Dan Aykroyd was in the top movie of the year. Ghostbusters. He wasn't the only actor involved either. The complete list of everyone involved in this song is pretty much a "who were the most famous in the 70's-80's". With the Super Bowl analogy, I will say this: This is like getting every star from every Super Bowl & putting them all on one team. I will leave the list here. Soloists (in order of appearance) Lionel Richie Stevie Wonder Paul Simon Kenny Rogers James Ingram Tina Turner Billy Joel Michael Jackson Diana Ross Dionne Warwick Willie Nelson Al Jarreau Bruce Springsteen Kenny Loggins Steve Perry Daryl Hall Huey Lewis Cyndi Lauper Kim Carnes Bob Dylan Ray Charles “We Are the World” Chorus (alphabetically) Dan Aykroyd Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Mario Cipollina Johnny Colla Sheila E. Dan Aykroyd just happened to be in town, looking to hire a business manager, but accidentally visited a talent manager. That manager tipped him off to the recording session, so he thought it would be interesting to stop by, and see what it was all about. They weren’t even expecting him, but of course, they weren’t going to turn away the great Elwood Blues. They put him in the chorus, and the rest is history.

The music/instruments, Michael Jackson solos, and guiding vocal tracks were recorded at Kenny Rogers's Lion Share Studios in the days leading up to the big recording. Days later, some solos (Stevie Wonder) were also recorded at Lion Share. He donated that studio time. The singers gathered at A&M Studios. Harry Bellefonte spoke to Kenny Rogers about a fundraising song. Kenny's long-time manager Ken Kregan spoke with Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, and Michael Jackson. It was largely Ken Kragen who pulled more artists into the project.

I remember when this came out in I think March 1985. It was to raise money and awareness for the famine in Ethiopia. Prior to this song in Britain Bob Geldof had formed Band Aid, recorded in a day with British pop stars that had flown in from all over and released "Do They Know It's Christmas" in November 1984. You might want to take a listen to that song as well since it's the time of year. Geldof later went on to organize that historic Live Aid concert in July 1985.It was wonderful when all the stars set their egos aside to work together.

Prince Rogers Nelson (RIP) was supposed to be there that night, but turned it down (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9SIerqV2Jjapqs.html). Go to the 5:24 mark in that video link for that story. Michael Jackson skipped the awards ceremony to record his vocals in the first chorus. Steve Perry was the first to arrive at the studio and saw Michael in the midst of recording a take. Steve's first comment upon seeing Michael there: "Am I dreaming?" True story.

I feel like I need to remind people that the person initially responsible for this is Harry Belafonte, who we just lost. And it’s really written by MJ. Lionel wrote like 3 words, which is why they changed lyrics for the one for Haiti. To settle the dispute of him being credited as co writer.

My mom and aunt always threw us a big Halloween party. The year this came out we all got We Are The World 45 records. I wish I’d of cherished it more, but I was young and didn’t realize it’s importance. Best song ever. When Michael was still perfect.

Did someone say that ad-libber near Ray Charles' ending ad-libs is James Ingram, Quincy Jones' protege. Someone may have answered this by now. He passed away a couple of years ago. BRILLIANT ARTIST! XOXOX
