First VLOG with the Panasonic Lumix G9 - HLG vs Cinelike D vs Standard picture profiles

In this video I try out the Panasonic Lumix G9 for a vlog using 3 different picture profiles:
HLG, Cinelike D and Standard with contrast turned down to -4
The aim was to see which gives me the best looking image with the most dynamic range. Because I am using the free version of Blackmagic's Davinci Resolve I didn't want to go to the effort of transcoding hence why I am using the 72mbps 4 10 bit 420 setting with HLG

It was the Lumix 12-60 F3.5-5.6. Thanks. A bit different to the normal videos but just wanted to try a test whilst I was bored 😂

Don't confuse data rates, in different codecs, with the final IQ & DR. The amount of bits is where it's at - 10-BIT will ALWAYS get more data over 8-BIT - there's 2 more bits! HEVC is also *significantly* more efficient than the alternatives, so 72mbps could have significantly more IQ and DR over 150mbps MOV files (i'm speaking in generalities here, I haven't pixel peeped or compared with g9, and *sometimes* there will be very little benefit with a certain cam from 8 to 10-bit, coz it's a bit shit, or firmware is, or whatevs - YMMV. But there WILL more data there - and it has nothing to do with the amount of mbps. Different codecs require more data, that huge MOV file is bigger than that MKV, coz more mbps, yet that much smaller (HEVC/x265) MKV file takes *a lot* more processing power to edit, transcode, etc, but it does have more IQ, DR and BITS than the MOV file. (My terminology might be a bit off, but my understanding is sound).

Yeah it's a bit tech heavy but as so many wildlife photographers are quite brand specific I think I am missing a trick but not catering more towards my target audience which is often Panasonic and Olympus users.

@@ownvideofootage I bought mine for £599! So I saved a bunch of money! Just did a test and will whack it on the M43 facebook groups in a sec. It's worth it!

@@Idle566 Ah I never added anything just dragged highlights down and shadows up a touch. Could add a Lut but just wanted to see what the differences were with no major changes

You should be able to retrieve much more information in the highlight in HLG than you did

HLG doesn't give any highlight adjustment in resolve once its fixed that's pretty much it whereas cine D offered a fair bit of adjustment. HLG seems to offer adjustment in the mid range but nothing else. I have just got the VLOG L so that will be interesting to see. HLG is designed as a delivery format so it's pretty fixed and not really designed to be graded.
