The funny part is, the one about the construction site actually happened. A construction project was halted because the workers were scared of "mermaids." Keep in mind this ties into a larger case of mass hysteria centered around mermaids that was and still is occurring in Zimbabwe. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

"Eat a raw salmon." Ok, so this would imply that they're either an active predator or set up fish traps. Either one implies a pretty good metabolism and the latter implies a lot of brainpower driven by that metabolism. If they're gonna actually chase down a salmon, they need to be very fast. Salmon are strong, steamlined swimmers.

@@knight764 As someone already mentioned, some mammals don't actually have live birth! But also just because "that part" of the animal "looks like a fish" on the outside, that doesn't necessarily mean it has to function the same on the inside, at least not in a way that would make live birth impossible! Look at cetaceans (whales and dolphins) for instance, they "look like fish" despite being mammals and still give live birth in water just fine. Also there's the extinct ichthyosaurs too, they "looked like fish" and they also gave live birth, despite actually being marine reptiles. Idk why I spent so much time writing this but hey, I hope it's of mild interest to someone.

2:40 Not to shit on veterans or anything. I completely support the american military and all of its branches. I believe them as heroes but, when there are soldiers fighting in a war, they are likely to start seeing and hearing things that are not there. Soldiers can commonly develop schizophrenia and see hallucinations all the time. Soldier's perspectives are just not the best thing to go off of.
@MichaelCS146
@MichaelCS146 2 жыл бұрын
Soldiers can commonly develop PTSD, which can cause hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there) after coming home from war. Also, being in a high-stress environment long-term can cause your brain to "see things." But none of that is schizophrenia. You are so close to being correct, but you're just off. Nothing you said is right except maybe the last sentence. This reads like you heard about Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder from a friend who heard it from their sister, who heard it from a friend who heard it from their uncle who heard it from a coworker who heard it from their dad's friend, and details were muddled and changed along the way.

I don't know why, but it made me sad that P.T. Barnum is being referred to as a random conman in this comment. To be fair: it is possible to classify mythical creatures in the same way we classify real creatures. I personally think it can be a fun way to screw around, if you don’t have much to do.
@powergannon

For something like a wyrm or unicorn, it could be fun to speculate how they would be classified, but a mermaid is so absurd there’s really no possible logical way to try to classify them realistically.
@officialc1459

@@powergannon I mean really though? Technically if we go by the reasoning that mermaids evolved in a similar way to whales then classification is possible. But the half fish part no.

Translation: "On the previous day, when the Admiral had gone to the Rio del Oro, he said he saw three mermaids, that came very high up out of the sea; but they were not so beautiful as they are depicted for only after a fashion had human form in their faces. He said that he had seen some on other occasion in Guinea, on the coast of Malagueta." This is also "COINCIDENTALLY " manatee waters, and indeed subsequent explorers saw the natives hunt manatees for food. The Spanish were completely unfamiliar with manatees, by the way.
