ZeFrank is such a great combo of comedy, and genuine, extensive research. It's the reason why I've been watching his videos for almost 10 years now- the one good thing that Buzzfeed has introduced me to

I love ZFrank.... he's so comical and educational at the same time. Birds have an oil gland at the tail base, so when they preen, it does waterproof them. I never knew cormorants pulled the remora off of whales/large fish.. but that makes sense! Thank you for your review of ZFrank's video. It was great!

“No one wants a fish on their genital slit” is the funniest out of context sentence one ever heard
@grantarmstrong2968

I may have this wrong, but I think he was implying that remoras do actually use suction. While the spike like appendages are useful at increasing friction, they also create a pressure gradient by creating a vacuum underneath the remora. In other words, not only does the little spikes under the remora create friction, but by pushing away from the other fish with these little spikes, they create a little pocket where there is no water between them and the fish. By increasing the amount of empty space in between the two fish, the pressure differential between the little pocket of empty space and the surrounding water make the remora stick to the other fish. TLDR: basically, remoras use these little “spikes” not only to create friction, but also to form a pocket of empty space between themselves and what they want to attach to. This creates a pressure seal that keeps them in place. Remoras wouldn’t be able to hang upside down like they do with friction alone. Here is an example of how strong their suction can be: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9-ce81n0Kq5fZs.html

Most birds have oil on their feathers to some extent, but because owls feathers are specialized to be silent, they get waterlogged easier, so they can’t fly in the rain
@bowen13
@bowen13 9 ай бұрын
Many birds that live in or around the water have that water resistant oil you mentioned, though I'm less sure about more landlocked birds; they may have more traditional skin oils like mammals. Many birds will in fact drown or get eaten if they land in water, because they become unable to fly until they dry off. However, part of the reason birds preen is because their feathers start to fray with time and use, and preening essentially zips the feather back up into the appropriate shape. Another fun fact is that many birds that appear green do not actually have green pigmentation; their feathers grow in such a way that they refract green light.

6:50 no the barbs are blunt. The rim of the sucker on the remora creates a seal on whatever they are trying to suck to, then the barbs push the rest of the sucker away from whatever they are trying to stick to. Its like one of those suction cups that suck on and release with a lever except instead os pulling on the back of the suction cup the barbs push the front of the suction cup away (and im sure it pushed the skin of what its sticking to away as well).

9:36 base of the tail they have a gland, when preening birds will get the oils from there all over their face and then rub it everywhere! Some have colored oils as well,like hornbills which actually get the color on their beaks from the oils!

9:20 pretty sure preen glands are near the bird’s rear. Cormorants dive so deep that they get waterlogged anyway and have to dry in the sun.

No the blunt "teeth-comb-like things" don't stab you; they just provide more surface area for adhesion.
@arianaink100
@arianaink100 8 ай бұрын
6:55 Inncorrect it’s not that they stab you with needles to keep in place they aren’t stingers like a jellyfish… this is more like an Artery to a Vein: or like tap water and faucets tabs. (If being a wide tube like an Artery can pull or push a lot at once it’s like a hose it takes a ton of force…, but a vein which is smaller will have less volume and less pressure, veins will also have little flaps inside of it which slow down the blood pressure even more it’s why when you cut your finger it’s not like you hit a major artery and just die you nick a vein maybe and have some issues but it can heal up because the rate of flow is slower it’s not a lot of liquid being pumped at a fast rate so much so that there’s NOT a chance of healing. If you have a ton of flaps and a small pathway/network then you have more opportunities to create seals and leak proof systems. A geckos toe pads have numerous groves for this same reason they take up small surface area already but by having small structural networks they increase their surface area and tension and locking mechanism.) (Large surface area doesn’t always mean it’s a good grip - for many things you want a FRICTION grip meaning the platelets or structures should stack on a microscopic level and stay in place. Either this is physical interlocking Velcro and clay like where you want stacking and sheets of material composition to be uniform in size shape and have grit and surface area so the nooks and crannies can be filled and things can become smoothed out… how clay is a bunch of silica particles stacked in chains and rows or how Velcro and other surface frictions grip into eachother by their two different surfaces interlocking. or this is related to fluid dynamics how water or air is treated as a frictionless substance and or due to its properties it can be near-frictionless or interact with a frictionless surface. And how the animals surface area is treated: sharks have skin that’s extremely friction prone in one direction and in the other is designed to have water molecules slide off its surface. If water can not be on the surface if it’s considered frictionless on this animal as it swims how do you create another interlock on that surface? You just become an effective suction cup that works on frictionless or near frictionless surfaces and that’s not achieved by having a hockey puck surface area that’s also completely smooth on the base you need something that’s going to resist the pressure of swimming x times normal speeds and not fling off and something that needs to hold on not at 1 suction point but as many as possible as there’s twists turns and even collisions you can hit one them and they might not let go of their grip they’re locked in at multiple points not just 1 suction cup Most birds have oil glands as their feathers need it to stay healthy kinda like how normal hair and scalp skin needs some moisture- for the mud it also acts in some cases as an spf

Hey AVNJ, here's an oddball suggestion, but it'd be a perfect case for taking as much time as you want to talk. What if you reacted to fish named after works of fiction, compared them to the fiction they're named after, and judged the accuracy of the name based on that? You could get some from Wikipedia's "List of organisms named after works of fiction" and more from viewer comments if need be. Some examples are _Eeyorius hutchinsi,_ _Squalus quasimodo,_ _Danionella dracula,_ and _Lagiacrusichthys macropinna_ (named after Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter). For that matter, how about I throw all pretense out the window and ask that you analyze Monster Hunter's Piscine Wyverns and Leviathans? The former group are a wide variety of giant fishes with legs while the latter are (usually) hybrids of crocodilians and serpents with some fish-related features included.

Random question, a teacher know is buying a class pet, a gold fish or some kind of popular fish species. So far she has a large bowl tank around the size of a small or medium popcorn bowl or mixing bowl, would that be good for a species like a beta or goldfish? Just curious to see if that is good.
@feuerling
@feuerling 6 ай бұрын
"popcorn bowl" or "mixing bowl" is an awful measurement. But _big_ mixing bowls seem to be around 5 liters, and even the smallest, most resilient, and lazy fish need several times that, so it's way too small. Especially for goldfish, they can get huge. Bowl shapes aren't good for fish. The small surface area compared to the volume leads to bad gas exchange, and the shape makes it hard to attach the tech needed (filter, heater, lights.)
