My jaw dropped when you said you go through a huge can of flakes within a few days. Even with that many tanks I would have guessed at least two weeks. Crazy! I never thought about how much food a large fish room would go through. I have 4 tanks- a 60 gallon, a 55, a 20H, and a 10 gallon. I feed 4-5 different foods, so sometimes I am throwing food out for being old before I even get past 3/4 of the bag. Although, as shocked as I was at hearing how much fish food you go through, some people are shocked at how much dog food I go through. I breed Olde English Bulldogges and Bullmastiffs. Their food bill could rent an apartment in some areas of the country 😂

Variety is the spice of life. I have two cold water aquariums with small fish. They have a regular flake and a small flake. I feed small amounts every other day. On the in-between days I give them...on a rota:- Hard boiled egg yolk ... boiled, SKINNED peas and broad beans... frozen blood worms ... carrot slices, boiled and occasionally boiled cucumber slices. Some nibble away at algae... They love everything I offer them, they are happy, dorsal fins always up.

Oh, and yes the Omega One algae wafers have the very best ingredients. Almost every fish I have likes them. I crush some up for easier access to more fish, especially the smaller fish. My large severums eat the wafers whole, if I dont break them up. Agree totally with your opinion on them, best you can buy and the fish love it.

I agree 100 percent with the way you feed you're fish and also i been in the hobby 40 plus years and i have never ever feed live fish to my fish and never would. to risky like you said and for humane reasons sounds corny but i love my fish and have respect for all life. Good video take care and god bless!

I found this video to be very informative, and it shows how a good variety of foods for your fish can be a good thing, Anyone with a fish room would certainly save money by purchasing the larger tubs but for the hobbyist with just a few tanks there are the much smaller options. Paul in the UK.

Didn't realize this video is from 4yr back until I was done watching. Doesn't matter, good info is good info! I've never tried repashi but think I I'll give it a try soon. I fully understood all the food sizes and fish types to feed each with. But especially appreciated the comments about using feeder fish or locally sourced live foods. I don't believe most hobbyists would've thought about these sources not being in best health, having parasites, or having other illnesses. Thanks for the words of wisdom as a preventative measure. Have a great day!

Great video!! I am new to fish keeping and am learning as I go. I started out with a betta the beginning of this year. I now have 7 tanks and have enjoyed adding different species of fish to my tanks. I too use the tetra flakes and have had good luck with them. I use rapashy and bloodworms. I recently purchased 3 figure 8 puffers. I buy frozen silversides, Krill and shrimp. I am going to see if I can start some snails breeding so that I have a supply for them to eat. My LFS told me they were freshwater fish. Everything I have read says they are brackish. I started transitioning them over from fresh to brackish with my water changes. Thank you for your valuable information. Keep it up, I’m still learning. :)

It's interesting how fish react to different foods from the same company. I also use the omega one veggie rounds, fish and shrimp love them. Omega one flakes? Won't touch it. Ended up feeding it to my assassin snails. Half of my tanks get Cobalt Mysis Spirulina flakes: the fish in those tanks absolutely love it, but the fish in the community tank don't, they prefer the Aqueon Tropical flakes. Northfin pellets are received well by the fish large enough to eat them. Bug Bites are a winner all around.

There’s a lot of bs on KZfaq about best foods and I have bought a lot of these so called high end brands that turned out to be crap and what new fish keepers do not realise is these companies like tetra have been making fish food for 70 years and hikari 100 years they know their stuff and their food does exactly what it says on the tub! I have discovered my bettas love fresh spinach, as do my mystery snails. My snails also love broccoli florets & carrot slices. I also feed my snails snail jello which my bettas like also. My bettas eat aqueon betta pellets, fluval bug bites for small fish, freeze dried blood worms, & tetra betta flakes. My snails also get aqueon herbivore shrimp tablets (smallest algae tablet ever & almost all plants), & tetramin tropical tablets (good calcium sources in the product though calcium itself is not listed on nutrients). They go straight for both those & usually sit on them till they're gone or full, depending on their size.

Jason, I've used Hikari before but notice that the ingredients - 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th ingredients are all terrestrial grains/plants - wheat flour, flaked corn, wheat starch -- and also uses artificial color (red #3). Have been trying to use foods without artificial color and less, if any, terrestrial plant material as filler. Great video!

I would love to hear if you see any noticeable difference breeding or longevity after the switch. I haven't yet, but that could just be based on the fish I've been keeping.

Nice video. I enjoyed listening to everything you had to say. I don't understand why you freeze the foods though if they are eating it so fast. ?? I'm looking at my Omega one pellets right now and it doesn't expire until 9-2021.

Just to make sure they stay fresh. The fish room air temp is constantly at 81 degrees with humidity around 43%. I prefer the food not stay out for any longer than a week or so at those parameters.

As long as your fish will eat live baby brine (they are small enough) it's a great food!

I feed my fishes NorthFin brand flood and Bug Bites. Those Two brand have great ingredients, different varieties and have a great price. I do feed my fry, Fry starter from NorthFin and some Frozen cyclopods. So far my dwarf cichlids, my cichlids, and other fishes are thriving.....

Hi, Jason. Love your vids. A quick question: do you believe that ceramic bio-balls can create more surface area than a fine sponge filter of the same volume? Thanks!
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. The short answer is I'm not sure, but I think the difference is small enough that it doesn't have a noticable impact on fish.
@tsaodylan2381

Prime Time Aquatics Thank you! Honestly, I don’t believe ceramics can create more surface area. They only add more weight to the filtration system and cost more money. Hahaha.

Hi everyone and Primetime aquatics. Firstly thank you very much for sharing this wonderful video. As I am a complete newbie and just bought first few fish yesterday for my 70 litre Juwel primo tank aquarium which I had setup for nearly 1 year but had no fish till yesterday late evening/ night around 6pm- 8pm or so. The fish are very tiny 3 Rasbora fish and 2 tiny catfish or as some may call pleco fish. I was just wondering when would be appropriate to start feeding the fish? Any useful information about this would be very helpful/ useful. Thank you, Tom from UK.

I stock my planted tanks with tetras and endlers. They devour the Fluval Bug Bites. I also make a mixture of Omega Color flakes, Tetra Color granules and Northfin Community pellets in a pepper grinder and grind the food into my tanks. Do you have any thoughts on Golden Pearls and Decapsulated Brine Shrimp eggs as I am considering trying these?

For the brine shrimp eggs - definitely hatch them out! Fish will go crazy for them. : -)

I thought I was feeding a variety but compared to what you're doing... I'm bad at my job. I stick to Hikari for the most part, but not exclusively. I use the Hikari Sinking Carnivore and Hikari Sinking Gold pellets for the bottom feeders and the Hikari Bio-Gold+ and the Hikari Gold floating pellets and then some Ocean Nutrition Formula One & Two flake for the surface feeders. I also use a Hikari frozen Bloodworm cube every night for my fire eel. I have 5 tanks, one of which (29) is empty and doubles as a quarantine/hospital tank, two are grow out tanks (40g & 55g) and two are display tanks (75g & 210g). I've been doing this for nearly half a century and I still have so many questions I feel like a newb listening to you.

my fish go mental for hikari micro pellets, I even take a mortar and pestle and grind it into a blend for live bearer fry. I have repashy's *morning wood* for my clown plecostomus but it's so popular with mollies and platies I usually have to add a couple cubes at a time for there to be anything left, and the omega one algae wafers have top notch ingredients, idk what it is but my mollies like the cheaper "algae" wafers that turn into a cloud of goop better, idk if they're just a cheap date or what)( the only food you talked about I haven't tried is the new life spectrum sinking pellet, and the only thing I use that wasn't touched on in some way is; I have hikari sinking crab pellets just for my mystery snails, but it's popular with the live bearers to pick at idk if it's the added calcium or if it's just tasty
