@@PrimeTimeAquatics wow, I have been thinking about this like for the past 2 wks & just like that your video shows up. I've been thinking about getting a 75 cause I already have 3-55gal tanks that I'm not using right at this time till I know 1 way or another if we're going to move or not this year.

The first thing I loved about my new 55 gallon over a 75 is being able to move it myself. Upkeep is lower and cheaper, and it's not excessive in footprint for the small subtropical/coldwater species I raise.

This is exactly why 55s became more common place than 75s imo. most men can wrap their arms around 55s and carry them. and in the days before amazon hauling a 55 home was easier to carry and navigate with. I feel the 55 is designed for a balance of size and practicality for the common fish owner.

You make a compelling argument sir! I agree that the 55 is a great tank by price, they are easy to come by and a great first tank. I personally like the 75 better with the added depth.

I was able to pick up a new 75g on sale for the same price as a 55g so I was leaning towards the larger tank. But, once I saw the difference in the depth...that sealed the deal.

A lot of great tips in this comparison Jason. The basic rule of bigger is always better unless there is a human environmental concern (ie. Living space, foundation, etc...) Or budget concerns of upkeep. The more fish you have the greater the chances you will be needing more medication, foods, air flow, water, and such. Most of what you covered on your video. Nonetheless, all very valid points to consider.

Excellent points! Even though the 75 makes so much sense, cost is a factor, even at half off at Petco right now. My other big concern is the weight on the second floor, even though it’s going to be in a structural corner.

I have both sizes, the extra width of the 75s are nice…but when petsmart has they’re sales on the kits, I can actually get 2- 55gallon set up for the price of 1- 75 tank.. just the tank even with petco 50% off sales, by the time I outfit a 75. That being said I have four 75s and one 55g. Very good, and thought inspiring topic. Watching in 2022🙂👍🏻💯⭐️

Better late than never, but my husband just bought me the Marineland 75 gallon tank/stand set for Valentines Day so I can finally upgrade my community tiny fishies from a 20 gallon. Asked for a 40 breeder over the 55 due to the footprint. A couple in depth conversations later (6 months) about footprint/surface area vs water amount and my tank goals, there's a monster taking up the last available living room wall. I couldn't be happier. Best of both worlds. Thankfully, we do have concrete under our flooring.

My mantra - Bigger footprint = Better tank. I feel like you get 20 REAL gallons more in the upgrade. Adding height does nothing for the fish you keep-might as well add a sump. But extra width! YOWZA - now I can keep.... Nice comparison video - this should really help people who are thinking of buying their 2nd or 3rd tank; and their first mid sized tank. I wish I knew this when I got my first 55... though in those days, that was a big medium size tank. (of course, I'm so old, I remember before gars and bichirs had evolved...) Added note: Clear for life acrylic makes three 75g models: 48x18x20, 48x15x24, and 60x18x16. That last one is a huge tank for its volume!

Another great video mate personally I would go 50 only because from when I was shopping for my tanks seemed easier to find wider tanks but honestly its mostly due to when I see a empty tank my mind instantly goes to multies now if it was a 75 gallon lowboy style that would be amazing Though bringing up weight restrictions I heard from contractors yesterday the 23rd or 24th they will be here to redo my floors and reinforce it so once that's complete I can start setting up the tanks I'm really excited

I have both as well and to be honest I love both tanks, i find the 55 gal is a lot easier to maintain and as you mentioned to heat. the 55 is better for me to keep a warm temperature more evenly distributed, works wonders on plants :) easier to reach into pending on the tank height. 75 gal is an amazing tank but i would go with 90gal over 75's as they tend to have thicker glass a lot of the time. Love the video, thumbs UP!

I would only recommend someone getting a 55 over a 75 if the fish were smaller and if you have limited area. IMO 75 is the sweetspot in terms of size. You can keep large cichlids, community fish, and many other things in it. Of course bigger is always better. But 75G is a must for anyone on a budget.

i had an old 55 gallon tank where the center brace pulled away from the far side of the tank. so i had to make a decision on what size to buy because i have 2 butterfly koi. i was at a large petco and they had a complete 75 gallon set up: tank/stand/hood/light on sale for $300.00. wow are you kidding me! usually 2xs that price. so i bought a set up and totally love it. larger fish need that extra 6 inches in width for sure. when i was in college my good friend had a 75 gallon at his house full of large mean cichlids. i could watch them for hrs! 2 jack dempseys/3 green terrors/2 red devils/1manganese/2 plecos/1 very large port cichlid. he had several caves and the manganese was boss and when he wanted a cave, all the rest would shift caves according to heirarchy. was great. so i always wanted a 75 gallon and now i do! loveit! check my video on youtube: 75 gallon indoor koi pond #1 by ruger kidd. thanks

You could dry the area and use aquarium safe silicone while there's water in the tank because the brace never touches water. After a week it's good as new. $5 and time. U might need some kind of vice like setup using rope and clips to hold the glass in the right position.

I am on the fence here...I want the 75 gallon, but am afraid I won't be able to move it myself. I need to get it down my narrow stairs to the basement. In 2024 the 55 Gallon kits (with filter, light, heater, and hood) still $150, 75 gallon tanks have gone up to $300 (no lid, no filter). To complicate things though, there is now the 60 Gal breeder, same footprint as 75 Gal just 5" shorter and $190 for just the tank.....decisions....oddly the 60b is much closer in weight to the 55 gal than the 75 gallon.

If you have the space, I would recommend the 75 principally because changes in water chemistry develop more slowly in larger tanks. You have more time to respond should you have water quality problems. This does not mean that you can do away with weekly water changes or testing, however.

Excluding the 75, which is the obvious better choice, but for beginners I always recommend a 55 because they typically want to start with a 10 or 20, a 55 gallon setup isn't overall expensive and gives the fish the volume and keeps people in the hobby more when they have better luck vs a 10 gallon, and the 55 gallon can be found cheap in kits thru the big box store

Prime Time Aquatics - What's your opinion about a longer more 'horizontal' tank vs. a more 'vertical' tank. I apply this question to any tank from oh, 29 gallons and up. Pet stores have custom very 'long' tanks, sacrificing height. They report A. The fish prefer it and B. No, they will never sell me their long, custom tanks. I am setting up a 55 gallon tomorrow. I have two 29s currently which are pretty tall. I can't ask the fish but it seems swimming up and down so much versus a long swim, turn and then swim the other direction is not their preferred route. If you had a choice long and more narrow, or wider and taller? Thanks, Allan

Aquascaping a 55 becomes a one dimensional affair. Since it's so narrow you basically need to line up decorations side by side from left to right. With a 75 you can also layer decorations front to back, so you can do caves, layering steps, etc. and still have room for the fish. I've had both - I'll take the 75 any day.

But it's a bare tiled tank with only one main driftwood feature so it's fine for now. Full size like 40cm a year down the line and I'm not so sure. I might have to rehouse it for some rainbows instead, or even angelfish

I don't think the weight matter that much at all. I was a mover most of my life and most homes can hold a baby grand or player piano that weigh well over 1000 pounds a 75 gallons is not that much for the floor of a home depending on how they are built in your area. I have put crazy things into peoples homes and never have I seen a floor collapse yet.

I have a two story house and one of my upstairs room is my man cave room with a 55g, 30 and two 5g. My questions is if I put a 75g will that by issue, with the weight??? Any suggestions thanks

I'll even take a 33L over a 55. Not a fan of tall, shallow tanks. For the 4 foot space, either a 33L or a 75.

For most people the price will be way most determinant above all other factors Sure you may want the 2000 gallon tank, but really????. Five 55 gallon tanks can be handled for about $1000. With only two 75 gallon tanks you already might be spending more than that.
@PrimeTimeAquatics

Neither, buy a 40 breeder. Lower height, great surface area. 55 is too much work to clean, and the 75 will be much more expensive to equip.

I've got a 75 because its former owner wanted it out of his single-wide! Got the tank, oak stand, filters (aquaclear 110 and 70) and heater all for $100! And yes it holds water. But a 75 brand new won't cost a mint to filter. 2 aquaclear 110s will handle overcrowded mbuna, goldfish etc quite well.
