Kitty Litter (which I think is diatomaceous earth) is an excellent material for absorbing diesel. It will even absorb it out of plywood if it spills ( fume free in about 30 days, turn over or renew as needed) you can even burn much of it out when saturated. when my diesel stove (like refleks) overflowed and tried to burn down my office, I used it to save my stinking plywood floor !

Hi Helge!!! Great to see you moving along with the build. It was a little strange to see the drawing up on KZfaq ... looks like a good start on the anchor locker. You might want to pull the other boat out every two years instead ... that was some serious growth on the propeller -- you might want to look into Propspeed for the next haul out -- it is a good product when applied correctly. Tell Sara to get a little more sleep to but keep dancing -- nice moves!!! LOL!!
@hsobstad
@hsobstad Ай бұрын
Hi Robert! Yes, your drawings is coming handy now. Thanks again! Yes the Rhea should be up every 2nd year and not every 3rd. Takes too much toll on the sacrificial anode for the propeller (there was none left). The firm that supplied the new propeller for the Fisher told me to only degrease it with Acetone to prevent growth (does not work - so maybe Propspeed next time). "Tell Sara to get a little more sleep to but keep dancing" Done! :-)

Hi Helge and Sara! Another great video with lots of progress. The english word for "takrenne" is rain gutter, but we often refer to it as an "eavestrough". Have you ever used a dollop (klatt?) of silicon sealant between stacked rocks? It prevents them from shifting over the winter. You are making great memories of boating without boating. 😆 Have a great week!
@hsobstad
@hsobstad Ай бұрын
Hi Duncan! Haha, have you googled the Norwegian word for gutter ("takrenne")? :-D "Klatt" is also correct for a small amount of something like concrete or silicon sealant. No I have not used silicone for that. I very much prefer the concrete to do this job. It is a more natural product also I think :-) Thanks again for the SuperThanks :-)
@duncanjames914
@duncanjames914 Ай бұрын
@@hsobstad It's always a pleasure. Yes, concrete is best-especially at the top, where you have been using it. For "dry-stacked" stone walls, silicon just prevents things from shifting during winter and freeze-thaw cycles. It's not meant to be structural. Yes, I just ask the Oracle (Google 😉) for translation. Thanks for your motivating feedback. Sounds like plenty work, owning a 1940s wooden boat. Do you still have it? Norway is expensive on food and things. But not so much on nature and those kind of experiences. One can camp or anchor for free almost anywhere as long as it is not in peoples garden or harbours. Less espensive nowadays as the currency is favorable for both Euros and Dollars. :-)

@@hsobstad I planned to ship it to the UK but discovered it was ridiculously expensive to operate/moor etc'etc in the UK,around 10 times more expensive than Sweden e.g. around £450 p.a.marina membership(all inc.) whereas it was around the same per month in the UK not inc.lift-out,shore-power,winter storage etc. so I sold it reluctantly,it was around 10m L,3m beam,,5 tons,5 berth motor sailor. Good book choice Sarah, I read the series many years ago. The movie was not my favorite. We had a heat wave in BC last week, now it has "cooled" down, a mere 29 today. It wasn't supposed to get this warm today. The inside of the boat is taking shape. Did you say 3 meters of snow at the summer house?
@hsobstad

The things on the side of the building are known as GUTTERS, not to be confused with the gutters on the side of the road where the drains live.. If your candle is running out, it is said to be 'guttering;. English is a simple language spoken by a simple people who use context to affect meaning.

@@hsobstad The exploding concrete highways in Kansas ( Think ' Dorothy "Wizard of Oz) leave craters everywhere sometimes a meter deep and large enough to swallow a VW, almost resembles a minefield or a really good carpet 8om8ing. It is legend that Epoxy resin under polyester filler; Hoods and fenders usually bubble up like boiling and blistering and some cracking. Oddly enough you won't use anything emitting combustion gases to heat cure the epoxy like a heater or torch because it weakens the strength and bond. You should use a cure lamp instead. Anyway, the reactivation of plasticizers, gassing or amine blush continues up through 160°f but diminishes nicely between 120-140°f.

Great video thanks Helge. I'm learning a lot from you. Silly question here, can I thicken Polyester resin with silica the same as epoxy resin? Pete.
@hsobstad
@hsobstad Ай бұрын
I have not yet thickened polyester resin; I use thickened epoxy when such is needed. But you may (..!..) do it, but then change the order of things. With epoxy you add the components first and then thicken with the silica. That won´t work with polyester as you have very short working time once hardener is added. So start by adding silica to the polyester and then add the hardner. But remember, the hardening process is very swift (also the chemical reaction produce heat which in itself will speed up things) and you will only have a few minutes to complete the entire process, including adding the substance where it is supposed to be. So not very optimal. If you cool the polyester a bit (not to much as it might attract moisture) and also add less hardner (not less then 1% though) you might extend the working time by some minutes. :-)

Biaxial glass is stronger than chop, but it's not necessary for tabbing . Chop is good enough but much bulkier . I would only use biaxial for tabbing where tabbing has to be to be thinner as 1708 is much more expensive than mat AND there is nothing wrong with epoxing the bulkheads the poly tabbing them after . Many boats years ago were just tabbed and they held up for decades. Look at the bulkheads you've ripped out, they appear to be just tabbed

@mazdarx7887
@mazdarx7887 Ай бұрын
@@hsobstad hehehe, logic is lacking from many commenting. It's not hard to see that most are repeating what they herd elsewhere, no real experience at all. Just ask them what they do to prevent or reduce the fiberglass itch from grinding. I'll bet most don't know even about baby powder. powder up, then cold shower after gradually warming it up. Cold water closes the pores while the glass washes off, then the warm water opens them up to release anything left behind One of the oldest glass handling tricks around. It's what most did before cheap tyvec suits

Just stumbled upon your Channel, I'm getting ready to refit a Fisher 37 and am curious. Did you map out your internal design with a program or are you replicating the original design? Mine has some modifications I would like to add but I would like to lay it out in a computer software program that might utilize the space in the most effective manner? Thoughts?
@hsobstad
@hsobstad 14 күн бұрын
Hi Joe! Exciting refit with such a hugh boat. Quite a bit more than my 30ft Fisher. I did tear out ALL of the old interior due to rot in the bulkheads (and other places). Also my Fisher was fitted with 6 berths. 2 in the bow, 2 in the aft cabin and 2 in the mid-section (folding table down). That meant that all bed were small-ish. The head was VERY cramp. Not very much floor space in the pilot house either. So I am redoing all of the interior to fit my needs as a single hand sailer. My son actually did lay out the interior in a computer software, but it was some free stuff (possibly a game). So not very complicated, but you will find a video about it (ep. 29). Have followed the layout of what was set up in that video, except that I dont do the aft cabin. Instead I have a completely open solution. Yes it is radical, but I believe it will be ok. Of course a CAD program would be far better than what my son used, but I have no significant experience with CAD programmes. I think it is a very good idea to use a software program for the layout. And use time to consider your ideas, as they will develop and possibly change over time. I also built a full size dummy of the interior, using very basic techniques, to get a feel of how the interior actually would "feel" and the actual space of eg. the head. Best of luck with your progress :-)
