FISHER PH-480 Boombox One Channel No Sound Issue Fixed

This is a Fisher PH-480 boombox. It had a left side channel sound problem. I spent many hours to find out what was causing this issue.
I was able to check 3 of PH-480 boomboxes and found out that all of them had a similar type of sound issue. After the countless test and error process, I concluded that all of 3 had the same reason for its different type of sound issue.
The tone control board.
So if you have a Fisher PH-480 and need to fix the sound issue, most likely the problem came from the tone control board. So here is my two cents, whatever you do to fix the sound issue on Fisher PH-480, you want to start with the tone control board.

I'm amazed that you got that to work. I owned on of those in the 80's and it didn't last 2 years. The JVC RC-m70, that was a beast. I still (again) own one.

Very organized repair jobs. Labeling connectors, wires, etc; organizing screws with respective parts; excellent! I use my digital camera extensively to take pics before disassembly so I know how to reassemble (memory not as strong as it used to be ☺). I prefer mechanical repairs over solid state ones. Chip ICs can be a pain to find schematics for these days, let alone the chips themselves. Still have an O-scope and multi-meter. I'll work on simple transistor and capacitor amplifier issues when I have to. Not much experience fixing/adjusting/ troubleshooting radio reception, tuning caps, etc though. Fortunately never had to do that.

You are a master electronic fix man I wish you lived near me I have a vintage crown Crown CMC-5 Integrated Micro Component System that has no sound coming out of the speakers and the tape cassette dont play rewind or fast forward

I just got an old garrard gsw42 3D super woofer but it’s seems like the left speaker isn’t working, not sure what to do to fix it

Hi, please make a video inside ph 460. i can t find the right place for a green negative whire from back side. The green whire are one end connect to negative pin from power circuit.

Same thing happened to my JVC my dad found on the side of the street and he knew I collected cassettes so he gave it to me. I’m not that techy so I gave it a few good hits with my hand, it’s working now lol 😂

i take mine boombox from yard its 30 40 years old. it works but sounds only "zzzzzzzzzzzzz" what can i do for it? it gives same sound on every thing(casette, fm, am etc.)

Hello Teddy, are you still in business? I have a 480 K that I’ve had and played off & on reliably since the mid 80’s. Well, it finally started crapping out: first the left channel then the volume started oozing lower and lower. I’d really love to have it repaired!!

Hey Teddy. I looked your video and have to say, thumbs up to your work..nicely done and definitely nerves of steel you have. I Have the same issue at the moment on my Sharp GF-555x Boombox. Cannot figure out what is the problem..why the left speaker is mute (only very very light sound can be heard, but nothing else). I have cleaned the circuit boards and all the connectors, sadly these measures didn´t help. Do you have any suggestions, what should i do or try ???

Sometimes the pots and switches really get tarnished so badly that even contact cleaner won't work and I've resorted to metal polish or even Tarnex to remove the oxidation. You have to rinse off the Tarnex ASAP with contact cleaner afterwards though.

What is the tool you are using to check transistors at 16:33?

It looks like a nice handy transistor tester/identified with a display that identifies the three legs (emitter, base, collector), voltage drops/ outputs, and whether it is a PNP or NPN type transistor.

Very nice boom box. I have a GE form 1983 and it only has sound out of one speaker( unless you use headphones). The mpx circuit doesn't work( fm stereo) . I would fix it but you have to take dial scale off and the dial string.

Probably you want to check the internal switch of the head phone too. Sometimes this switch caused no sound issue too. I hope you will be able to fix the problem and enjoy your music with '80s GE boombox.

Which component causes the failure in the tone control board ?

The tone control board I used was almost OK except bass slider pod. Other than that, every parts were still in good condition. But the other 2 of tone controllers, I will re-check them and will replace the damaged component to see how it work.

Hi! If you change the surround suspansions of the speakers, you gain more low bass.

It's a pain to get some of these schematics. Not much you can do without them if it is a difficult problem.

sir have a sony cfs 715s radio casstte corder the problem is no bass and fm radio is not find station all function are good full sound and equilizer is working. but default bass is not working and radio is only hiss. what is this problem i have changed ic but same problem. what a cause please suggest me i really grateful to yoi

Probably tone controller since the bass and treble is in that section in most of the model. Probably the amp is OK.

There are countless reason your boombox does not work properly, and doing troubleshooting work to pinpoint the cause is most difficult and time consuming work. You need to test it step by step to find it out.

You have the patience of a Saint working that out. Although, would injecting a signal directly into the amplifier and working back not have arrived at the solution more quickly?

Yes Jason. You are absolutely right. When I opened the PH-480, I was lost where to start since it was too much complicated center unit design. When I injected signal through volume controller, at that time I finally got some idea what should I do in the first hand. But it a good learning process for me.

Not so long. I was a collector of the vintage items, and whenever I found something I was trying to fix it for online sale. At some point I started concentrate on these vintage music gears, such as turntable, flip-clock, boomboxes, etc...

the hi fi cassette is made in japan.. the tecnicien is from japan it is great this is the great japanes technologie .
