I have a Fisher Integrated Amplifier model CA 880. My aunt gave it to me probably 20 years ago, and she got it new back in the early 80s. Anyway, for at least the last 5 years , the volume knob would crackle like crazy when it was turned up or down. It was so bad that I had to adjust and readjust the knob over and over again just to get the sound to come out of both speakers. So I watched your vid, hit the hardware store for some contact cleaner, and cracked that sucker open. I followed your directions and now there is NO CRACKLE AT ALL and no "dead spots" on the volume dial. Thanks a million for the excellent instructions!

I love your channel. I came across it because I recently picked up a vintage Marantz tuner amp and started doing some research on it. I come over all warm and fuzzy when I watch your videos and I feel like I could curl up on your floor whilst you work on old stereo equipment. It's weird I know but there is something very comforting watching you work. Thank you.

For cleaning I use the already mentioned combo of CRC ELECTRONIC CLEANER/ CRC 2-26 lube which are easy to find. I use deoxit f5 if there is an actual "oxidation" issue. That is the ingredient that makes it different. Brick and mortar locations that carry CAIG Deoxit products right on the shelf that may be near you include, Guitar Center, Micro Center(computer store), select electrical trade supply houses, and select appliance repair houses.

I’ve cleaned large mixing consoles/desks for decades. Use CRC QD to clean, CRC 2-26 to lubricate. That’s all you need and stands the test of time. The real secret is the person doing the job. You can damage just about anything by not knowing what you are doing even with the right chemicals. And don’t tell anyone, but somehow 40 years ago they cleaned components with isopropyl alcohol and lubricated with wd40! The horror!

CRC QD should be used very sparingly. Too much will compromise the carbon tracks inside the potentiometer. Dexoit Gold is for gold plated surfaces ONLY, such as computer edge card connectors. It contains up to 70% naphtha which is a very strong solvent, and will also attack plastics. You do NOT want to use this on potentiometers. Deoxit F5 is designed specifically for faders, and generally accepted for use on potentiometers. It is safe for plastics. Deoxit D5 is for metal-on-metal contacts such as switches, relays, and connectors.

I purchased some Deoxit D5 Gold just the other day, because thier information on the brochure said it was safe on plastics and clearly can be used on precious metals, such as for example gold, silver and rhodium. When you say potentiometers do you mean pots ? Like volume, bass, mid and treble controls ? It's made as an electronic cleaner, so why would it be made unsafe for pots ?

Crackling volume or other pots can also be an indicator of bad capacitors with high DC leakage. The DC passes thru the pot and as you move it, it crackles. Of course if you have sudden loudness changes as you rotate a pot, it's most likely dirty or has a bad spot.

For your amazement WD40 stands for "Water displacement 40" it has been use for over 50 years in the boating industry to dry and promote electronic contact in wet ignitions systems of boats and of cars. It was also use in the boat store next to my house when I was a teenager for contacts and switches. Making them work instantly. It was manufactured for that. People now a days use it to lubricate when this IS NOT A LUBRICANT like penetrating oil but will leave a small oily lubrication since the main component is FISH OIL... I don't use it for potentiometers... when I get a bad case of a dirty POT I just disassembled it, cleaning by hand with a Qtip or whatever needed and re-assemble it back! And that turn out to be a super clean pot...

I have seen some warnings about using D5 on carbon pots, since it attacks the trace apparently. So following up with DeOxit Gold or Fader lube (F5 in the green can) is recommended. Mr. Carlson's Lab (super expert) even recommends using Specialist Gel Lube WD-40 (not normal WD40!), formerly known as "Spray-n-Stay". It prevents oxidation and water intrusion and provides smooth operation and good contact for a long time. Your instincts about this are good, and thanks for the tip on a lower cost solution! Saw your warning about WD-40. Specialist Gel is different stuff and it's not for cleaning, it's for preserving the clean contacts.

Deoxit markets its F5/Fader product as for use with faders and potentiometers. However, if you read the company's product guide for audio gear applications, they recommend *only* F5 for faders and *only* D5 for potentiometers. At least I'm not the only one confused.

Brass plate etc and so will kill the carbon tracks inside pots over time & sometimes in fairly short order and isn't great on fibre board PCB's in older equipment....!!!!! The Green F5 Fader Deoxit is intended to be safe for carbon or other resistive tracks and won't kill your pots or faders.....And the Gold one is specifically for Cleaning Gold Plated Contacts....All seem to be really good for all of their intended uses....

Both knobs rotate freely and smoothly but the fine tuner feels like it doesn’t always grab so to speak and will only erratically move the needle. I assume its geared and only actually supposed to be spinning the larger outer knob when you turn it but just slowly? Should I attempt something like this? I’m not sure how easy it is to get into, could I just pull the knobs off and try to squirt this in from the shaft end? Great video btw.

Deoxit gold is just an extremely mild form of deoxit. The "gold" indicates that it's intended for use in applications where precious metals are present as they can be harmed by something as strong as normal deoxit. Classic deoxit is 20‰ cleaning agent by volume. Deoxit Gold contains a mere .5‰ (one half of one percent) cleaning agent by volume.

There are a lot of OCD You Tubers that will argue this way or that, however at the end of the day experiment and use what works for you. You cant go wrong... I use cleaner that I can get in stores here (Deoxit is amazon only) and have found that the cleaner fixes my problem (scratchy static on the volume knob) but a few hours later once its dried the sounds come back. Will D5 fix this and make it last forever, or do I need just the gold? Or...something else?

Follow up with some D5, that should take care of it. But before you add the D5, flush the pot with your cleaner first.

All these contact sprays will eventually dissolve the grease that keeps the gear inside the volume pot lubricated. If you are to use a contact spray to dissolve gunk build up, make sure to re-grease it afterwards, otherwise the gear inside the pot is made of plastic and it will dry up, start cracking and eventually break and then you won't be able to turn it at all.

Yes this helps! But I have to clean the pots on a 64 channel mixing board. I'm thinking I could buy another one cheaper than cleaning. But I don't throw anything away. Even if it cost me more to fix it. I should had been smarter when I stored it before I tried to use it 10 years later. I will always own up to my mistakes. That's the only way our viewers will learn. Learn from others mistakes. Not your own. It will save you a ton of money.

*DO* *NOT* *USE* Deoxit D5 (Red can) in a pot. Over time it will ruin the pot. *DO* *NOT* *SPRAY* anything into your gear while it is plugged in or turned on. Pots work by using a carbon slide surface as a variable resistor. As the slide contact moves along this carbon surface, it increases and decreases the resistance. A volume pot is a variable resistor. Deoxit D5 will destroy that carbon slide surface over time. *USE* *Deoxit* *F5* and don't spray it where you have it dripping out of the component. Especialy if you're using it to clean a variable capacitor type fader or knob. Spraying too much into it can short it causing it to release the stored electrical power inside it at the wrong time. You only need a quick burt of it. You immediately turn the pot to work the cleaner into it. Then blow it out with come air.
@Casualfulltime
@Casualfulltime Жыл бұрын
At least try and catch the dripping liquids - they are often sticky and nasty- the last thing you want dripping onto the components. The amount of times i've picked up gear cleaned like this by amateur audio nuts as 'working' and they are full of gunk is ridiculous. Your method is always a temporary fix - and the best solution is to take apart the pots and clean properly. For a 'quick fix' that last the longest- I recommend Isopropyl works best from my experience and 100% evaporates.

Don’t use the red with pots!!! Use the green, and gold! Red will eat the carbon tracks of the pots! You also need to take the pot out, take it apart clean all the contacts and then use fader grease. You are doing this all wrong! You just washed all the grease out!
