She really needs to read 'The Fourth Industrial Revolution' by Klauss schwab of the World Economic Forum. Commercial fishing is to be fully wound up over the next ten years or so.......and likely Ireland will be best boys in class at scrapping boats. They are creating conditions that make the industry unsustainable by design so as to make decommissioning and scrapping an attractive option. It is all part of the plan and its not hidden, just that nobody wants to read it.

I am in Australia but I was in Britain in the early 70's I stopped in to see people in Hull east of England. It was a true fishing port and proud people sailing dangerous waters. The E.U put pay to the British fishing industry. I saw a Documentary which included Hull that was part of the pre Brexit news and to port I saw busy and full of Trawlers empty. Look I know there is feelings between The Irish and Britain, but look at what the British people have had to do and go through (Still 5 years on. ) The E.U is about take over. Germany and France are running the show. From here I doubt the E.U can survive it has not put ant plans for getting economies on the same level. The strong are controlling the weak. Who am I, I have Irish Background, born in London, back came to Australia as a lad. You can't Blame Britain for being in the E.U. Look at the arguments now over British fishing grounds. I am told, that the fishing waters of Britain were sustainably fished before but now the E.U Has trawled the back out of it with there large trawler factories, and the fish don't touch Britain, they are sailed to Europe. It was wrong for the British fishermen and it's wrong for you too. They have plundered their own waters now they are doing the same to you. Did you see that the E.U. that Britain has Left have just hit Northern Ireland with 800 brand new rules. The E.U is trying to use the Republic and Northern Ireland against Britain's exit. Coursing trouble, to hell with Ireland. I say to you we are all people and we just want to live a nice life. A roof over head, warmth in the cold, Food to eat, Cloths to wear, a Dram or two and family. You have a serious problem and you are going to need friends. Think about that sooner or later you will need friends. There are many lies out there, you are living truth. I wish you all good luck. To be honest the world right now saddens me.. This is Man doing this to Man. Now I have to apologise for use that term? I am an old sick man and this is not my fight even if I wanted.

The EU policy has been flawed for years. The degradation of fish stocks needs to be seriously addressed and without doubt inshore pair trawling should be banned.

Look at what the EU has done for fishing ports over here in the UK. Hull, Grimsby, Fleetwood, Lowestoft.... mostly decimated. Damien seems like a lovely bloke, just being ground down. Catherine and others like her should come together as independents and stand for the the Dail. None of your current politicians are going to fight for you. Outside the EU is the only future for Irish fishing. Just don't do a deal like we've done where you still have to wait 5 years to get control back and the fisheries protection is non-existant.

As stated above, the only way to keep your fishing industry is to abandon the EU and reclaim your waters before it’s too late. I fear your government don’t have the political will to do it.

Eirexit, will solve Nothing, only create even more problems for our beleaguered fishermen (and Not just for them), you only have to look across the Irish sea to Brexit Britian who've taken back control of their waters, left their largest market, and who's fish exports to the EU fell by 83% this Janurary their fishing industry's on it's knees, and who now find they've got no market for their fish. Irish Seafood exports were worth €605 million in 2019, a 6% increase on 2018. European markets especially France, Spain, Italy the UK and Poland continue to dominate Irish seafood exports accounting for 53% of Irish Seafood exports so leaving your biggest market won't solve any of your problems. The total value of fish landed in Ireland last year was €250 million and the number of people employed in the industry is around sixteen thousand. Compare this to Agriculture which contributed €9.4 billion to the economy and employs one hundred and ten thousand people and you can begin to see where the Governments priorities lie. Fishing represents around 1% of Irelands GDP, what the Irish fishing industry badly need is good political representation at an EU level, not politicians who pay lip service to the industry at home and do nothing to represent their constituents in Brussels, to help level the playing field and get fairer quotas for Irish fishermen, a better deal for them, their families and the coastal communities and support Industries which depend on them. And fair play to Damien and Catherine in Castletownbere for highlighting the problems facing the industry. www.irishtimes.com/business/so-long-and-thanks-for-all-the-fish-1.1126814?mode=amp

@@davidodonovan4982 Of course , it is a double edge sword, EU or Eirexit. There are advantages and disadvantages. Ireland may lose her easy access to the EU market but if push comes to shove, we just have to work harder to expand our market further. The most important aspect is that we can put a stop to the encroachment of Irish fishing grounds and preserve our marine resources from over fishing.
@davidodonovan4982

@@ochoonda Theres No double edged sword about it, Unless you've been asleep for the last four years ? If we leave our largest market, then we lose access to that market, it's not rocket science really ! Irelands total exports to the EU in 2019 amounted to over €62.8 billion to the Irish economy, which supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in the worlds largest trading block, on our own doorstep, and our membership of the EU has made Ireland the economic powerhouse it is today. We leave that we lose access to that, you only need to look at the UK fishing Industry, or what's left of it to see that. And just where exactly are we going to expand our markets to ? The biggest problem the Irish fishing industry have, and have always had is that they aren't really seen as a priority by the Irish Government as they represent such a small sector of the Irish economy and that's not about to change anytime soon, Brexit, ( which doesn't survive any contact with reality) is the greatest advertisement for EU membership ever. I Sincerely hope you're not considering a career in politics !

On the contrary, unless you are suffering from selective amnesia, you seem to ignore how Brussels twisted the Irish government to bail out the banks during the 2008 banking crisis that led to a fire sale of Irish assets through NAMA. EU is not our biggest market, it is so only because of EU regulations that prevent member countries to trade freely out of EU. Otherwise, China and US would have been our biggest markets. There is a huge price to pay to enjoy access to the EU market. The EU is an extortionist racket. Brussels take more than they give. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Keep dreaming. Mark my words, UK will survive Brexit.
@davidodonovan4982
@davidodonovan4982 3 жыл бұрын
@@ochoonda Not suffering from collective amnesia at all, totally agree about the bank bail out but what's that got to do with the fishing industry ? And the European Union IS Irelands largest trading partner accounting for 43% of total exports, the United States is our second largest at around 30% and the UK is our third at less then 10% and falling, to be overtaken by Belgium this year as direct result of barriers to trade erected by our nearest neighbour, who If I recall are struggling to secure a trade deal with the US, which was to have been the big win of brexit, in spite of their special relationship. Ireland through its EU membership enjoys trade with over 70 countries around the world and can use the power of it's EU membership to secure much better deals for all member states than it could ever get as a small independent country, unlike the UK we didn't have to leave the EU in order to do so, also Unlike the UK, Ireland's made a success of its EU membership. And brexit if I recall correctly, isn't about survival !
