In this video, we're going to show you how to catch mangrove snapper while fishing at the Florida Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay using frozen pilchards. Mangrove snapper are known to be picky eaters, but using fresh bait can be a game changer. However, if you don't have access to live bait, frozen pilchards can still be effective.
First, we'll go over the equipment you'll need. We recommend using a medium to heavy spinning rod (6-7 feet in length), a reel with a good drag system, 20-30 lb test braided line, and a 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leader. You'll also need a few different sizes of hooks, split shots, and a small float.
Next, we'll discuss how to find a good spot to fish for mangrove snapper. Look for areas around the pilings of the Skyway Bridge where the current is moving. Mangrove snapper prefer to feed in moving water, so this is where you'll want to focus your efforts.
Once you've found a good spot, it's time to set up your rig. Start by tying your hook onto your leader using a loop knot. Then, add a small split shot about a foot above the hook to help keep your bait near the bottom. Finally, add a small float a few feet above the hook to help keep your bait off the bottom.
Now, it's time to bait up with the frozen pilchards. Start by thawing out a few pilchards, then cut them into small chunks that will fit on your hook.
If you feel a bite but don't hook the fish, don't be discouraged. Mangrove snapper are known to be shy and cautious, so it may take a few tries to get them to commit to your bait.
When you do hook a mangrove snapper, be prepared for a good fight. These fish are strong fighters, so keep your rod tip up and reel in steadily to prevent the fish from escaping. Once you've brought the fish close to the surface, use a landing net to scoop it up and bring it aboard.
Remember to handle the fish gently and remove the hook carefully to release it back into the water.
That's it! With these tips and techniques, you'll be well on your way to catching mangrove snapper while fishing at the Florida Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay using frozen pilchards. Thanks for watching!
