Have you ever planned a fishing trip, just to get out on the water and find that the water is doing the total opposite of what the tide chart said it would be doing?
Maybe the tide chart said the tide was coming in all morning, but you get out there and it’s actually going out…
Or it was supposed to be high tide, but the water was so low you couldn’t get to your favorite spot…
Has that ever happened to you?
Here’s the thing, tide charts are based on the sun and the moon, but those aren’t the only factors that affect tide and current.
There’s also:
- Wind
- Pressure
- Geography
- And other factors
When planning your trips and figuring out what the water will be doing, you need to take all of these factors into consideration.
Sometimes the tide chart will be accurate, sometimes it won’t be, but in this video, we’ll teach you everything you need to know about tides so you can get better at planning your fishing trips and catch more fish.

For me the 1st thing i look for is wind direction then wave height then last is the tide chart. Ive experienced so many times that the tide algorithm will say its a poor time to go fishing yet its the other way around vice versa

Thank you. I am new to saltwater strong subscriber coming from freshwater fishing only. So far salt strong has really educated me so much since freshwater never care about tide.

In my area Long Island NY, after high tide it takes between 1:30 min to 2 hours for the water to reverse direction so although the water may appear to be coming in for example you will notice the water is getting lower seems the fish are on the bite during this period until 1 hour after the water swings around....and yes when wind and tide are in the same direction this can have an effect on the time of change and vise versa ..

Sounds like you're in an area with a small inlet feeding two big bodies of water.

Great tutorial. Suggestion: Would it be possible to show as moon revolves around how it causes a high and low tides. The bite forecaster is extremely accurate as Luke stated unless there is significant wind changes. This alone is worth annual membership.

At 10:33 I think it would be important to emphasize that an "East Wind" is PUSHING the water West. Bc an "East Wind" means the wind is coming From the East and not blowing East... Am I accurate about that????

Around 24:00--- The tide was going out and the water rose? That makes no sense.

Quick question. In regards to tide times in tidal rivers. Is downstream towards the mouth always earlier than upstream? Example if high tide at the mouth is 10 am is high tide further upstream later on like 11 am or so? Is it the same concept for outgoing tide as well? Thank you!
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong Жыл бұрын
Right. It takes time for the water to flow, so the time will be different depending on the exact location and how fast the water gets there. If the area upstream is blocked by islands, pinch points, etc, it can take longer for the water to get through those areas. Wind can also play a factor.
@brianbrown9102

@Salt Strong thank you. Hoe does it work on outgoing tide? Is low tide earlier upstream than downstream?

I was told it's the moon gravity that makes waves in the ocean. I was told this by my 8th grade science teacher.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 4 жыл бұрын
The moon's gravitation force is the top driver of the tides, but the sun's force is a factor too as well as the winds, air pressure, and even rainfall in some circumstances. If it was just the moon and the sun, the tide forecasts would always be perfectly accurate.

Holy smokes...I appreciate the content, sincerely. But...GOOD LORD. Get a line in the water. There are infinite possibilities of Earth/Moon/Sun/Wind/Bait/Water Level/Depth/Temperature at any given time. And as mentioned this changes momentarily at any moment...so just fish.

Next time you go fishing in the Flat Level Gulf (because water Always seeks it's own level, water Cannot curve around a sphere) .. LOOK at the Horizon. How far do you think it is? The math for a sphere with a radius of 3959 miles and taking refraction into account says the horizon can be no more than 1.32 miles times the square root of the height of the observer (on a clear day winter or summer). This is a limitation of your supposed physical sphere edge horizon - Unless the sphere gets larger, that's set in stone. For a 6 ft man, the square is 2.4. 2.4 x 1.32 is 3.16 miles. You Never see the horizon as close as 3.16 miles it's Always Many miles distant. Your globe model has Problems!
