Make Flavoured Breadpaste - Quick Easy and Cheap. In years gone by, Breadpaste was a common bait used by anglers all over the country. Since the advent of commercial Fisheries however, breadpaste is rarely used. The main reason for this is that anglers now have a massive variety of hookbaits to choose from and most of them come ready made in a bag.
My way of making this very versatile and cheap bait is probably halfway between the traditional methods and the modern trend for baits in a bag. All you need is a bag of breadcrumbs from the local supermarket and some water. Of course, you can easily add other ingredients which can be found on the shelf in your pantry. in my case, I like to use Turmeric, but there are lots of other granulated additives you can use includingPaprika or Custard Powder. The list is endless, so why not try experimenting with other flavours like Curry Powder or Coffee?

Hi Den, I have experimented with breadpaste bait and did the following. I had a pond in the garden of my old house, but my house now doesn't, so I ended up with a bag load of pond pellets. I ground these down and mixed them with the bread crumbs made from dried slices. The fish went mad for them, but I found the balls were sucked off easily without the fish being hooked. So I blended in some flour to act as a binding agent and my hooked fish rate shot up. Following your suggestion of different additives I now have a jar of Turmeric, bottle of strawbwerry ice cream topping and a couple of bottles of colourings. I have had success with all I have tried, but the ground up pond pellets seem to be the best on my local lake. But most of all I am having a lot of fun experimenting with making bread paste. I am off to North Yorkshire soon and have looked up a few lakes to try it on up there.

There is nothing more satisfying than make your own paste, regardless of what flavours you add or having a look at how others make their versions of it. I make mine during the close season ( Yes the close season)...and stock the freezers up with it. Probably why I'm happily married...I'm now divorced! anyway....Paste making...fun...catching in the Summer and especially in Winter and more so in Winter...fantastic stuff.

Talk about perfect timing, I am going to take my grandson fishing for the first time in the next couple of days, I have just liquidised some bread to use as ground bait, I am going to try sweetcorn mixed in with the ground bait and use sweetcorn on the hook, but I shall give your method of bread paste a try as well. Tanks for the info.

Hi Russell. I'm glad the video helped. Just be a bit careful with how you mix the breadcrumbs though mate. Too much water and you will just end up with more paste than groundbait. In fact my recommendation would be to liquidise fresh bread, put it into an airtight bag and then use it straight from the bag. Just give it a squeeze and it should sink fine. If you have one of those little squeezy bottle atomisers, you can add a little water to it to help it sink if needs be. Tight lines.

I love using curry powder on my expanders, which seems to work better than normal expanders. It's been years since i've used bread paste. I use to catch a lot of bream on it at a local pond in north Lincs called winters on the south bank of the Humber. Use to use it on the feeder with liquidized bread over a bed of mashed bread, that's a method i've not used or seen used for a long time.

Bread paste certainly does seem to be taking a back seat in these times of manufactured baits. The good news is that bread paste is cheap, so in these times of hardship caused by the Coronavirus, maybe it will help anglers get back on the bank.

Never used breadcrumbs for bait only ground bait? but will try it now! I often use 3 slices of bread and cheese spread on each and then knead it into a glubby lump often a go to bait when quite. Great vid.

Thanks Phillip. I like the idea of using cheese spread. It makes a nice soft paste.

Could I make this and store it in my refrigerator or freezer? If so about how long will it keep? I was thinking of making different flavors and storing them in my freezer or refrigerator until fishing opens up in Pennsylvania.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tina. Yes, you can keep this bait in the freezer. The most I have kept it in is about 3 months because I use it up over that period of time. I would think you could keep it a lot longer if you wanted though. You stay safe over there in the USA.

Great advice! I'm going to try turmeric now. 😁 I've been using aniseed essence for decades (with good results) but the supermarkets have stopped selling it (down to my last bottle). Have you ever tried mixing a tin of cheap-and-nasty tuna or prawns in with your ground bait? Rumour has it that they're supposed to be good attractants. Thanks for the tips. 👍
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments John. Billy Lanes Tackle shop in Coventry used to sell it in bottles. I used it for many years, so it's a shame you can't get it anymore. As for the Tuna and Prawns, I haven't tried it, but i suspect I would get lots of attention from Eels over here.

Hi Jack. Yes you can, but sometimes a lighter piece which has been broken off a slice of bread can work better for species like Mullet.

Most of us buy from Billy Clarke Tackle online. They are a really good company with a great service. The only downside is the cost of postage, but that’s not their fault. Very few other companies send stuff out worldwide.
