FitBit just released their latest model, the Charge 4. Should you buy this if you want to track your sleep 🛌💤?

For 48 nights I wore both the FitBit and a professional scientific sleep EEG to bed 🛌. The professional device basically has more than a dozen electrodes attached to my head and face and tracks my brain waves. By wearing this device and the FitBit to bed, I tested how well the FitBit is able to predict the different sleep stages.

📝Notes📝
- I am not trained as a sleep expert. What I describe in this vlog, I have learned by talking with specialised scientists and reading scientific papers about the subject.
- One reason the FitBit predicts more awake time, might be because when sleep is scored with an EEG device, you have to be awake for at least 90 seconds before it is scored as "awake". With the FitBit, this can be as short as 30 seconds. This makes it more likely that the FitBit predicts more time awake.
Acknowledgements
Many thanks to Sebastian Idesis, Frederik Weber and Martin Dresler from the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging for all their help with the EEG measurements

Not so happy with the sleep tracking. I find it difficult to wear something on my wrist to sleep, but it has been helpful. Seems it doesn’t start tracking sleep until an hour after I am sleeping. The metrics showed I sleep mostly in light, like you said. This was not the reason I purchased the tracker, so it was helpful to see your confusing statistics. As I have been exercising at home, I am happy with the results overall and appreciate your scientific approach.

Thank you Rob, to suffer for us, the find the optmal sleep tracker. We decided for a Garmin watch, a Fitbit charge 4, Muse S EEG, and manual recording, and we are waiting for your review from you about a do it yourself EEG device based on OpenBCI, which we suppose will be the best among the affordable devices. We will rebuild it, if it is worth to do it. A combination of several devices will give the optimum for sleep duration, which is an important parameter for mediators and researchers.

Great video, thanks! But the Fitbit also gives total sleep time stats. If you ignore sleep stages (as I tend to do, knowing they aren't likely to be so accurate), and just lump (light/deep/REM) together vs awake, how accurate is the Fitbit Charge X against your EEG device as a percentage? And can you please comment on how you quantified sleep with he EEG device? Was this an automatic algorithm? And is there any data on how accurate this automatic algorithm is compared to manually scoring sleep stages? I'm a neuroscientist who partly works in a sleep lab, so any nerdy details I'll appreciate! Also, we were thinking of using fitbits in our lab for an upcoming sleep deprivation cognition project a PhD student of mine was thinking of running. Any chance you could share your data with us?

THank you again. I am also a FITBIT lover. Using CHarge 2 HR for 4+ years now.. changed the straps though. Its doing well, though needs. more ferquent charging and some times sleep tracking goes to old mode of 2 coloured line graphs only. That's not really helpful. I bought Huwaei Band 6, reasonably good, but I couldn't like their app fucntions, UI etc. It lacked staircase climbing, so I am forced to return the Huwaei. Looking to CHARGE HR 5 model sooner.. though HR 4 might also fit my needs.. Let me wait to see HR 5 and then decide. Can you throw more light on VO2 max graphs and HRV, Sleeping HR rate patterns please. I am 59 yrs, looking to maintain my heart and sleep patterns well with good health. Thank you again.

Fascinating video thank you! My Fitbit Charge 2 actually only records detailed sleep about once a week, if I'm lucky. The rest of the time I'm only getting basic sleep results. Just wondered what your experience was with the provision of detailed sleep for all your Fitbits, and if you found the Charge 3 to be more (or less) reliable than the Charge 2 in that respect? Thank you.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Darrell, I used to have similar problems, though not as severe. About a year and a half ago (for a while) my FitBit would indeed record a lot of nights with just a basic sleep report. These were nights where I did sleep for more than 4 hours (which I think is the minimum that FitBit requires). At that time I found that if I restarted my iPhone and opened the FitBit app as the first app to start it would often work again the next day. Though this is very anecdotal of course, and there was no way to properly test it. I have tons of trackers and apps that require bluetooth, gps and all other sensors, but I have no idea of this contributed. Recently I have not experienced this problem on a consistent basis, and I have not really seen a difference between the charge 2 and 3 when it comes to reliability. Not sure hat it could be in your case... You could even try installing the app on a different device (phone/tablet) if you have one, and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise contact fitbit support to make sure your unit is functioning properly. Of course also make sure that the FitBit is as tight on your wrist as they recommend. Sorry I could not be of more help. let us know if you got it to work in the end! Have a great day :-D!

Hi Manraj! Thanks for your good question. So, I would say as an allround fitness tracker and sleep tracker, I would choose a FitBit. However, for pure sleep tracking you might want to go with a dedicated sleep EEG. The Dreem 2 headband seems quite good for this, though I have not tried it yet myself (hopefully soon). I might make a video about my opinion on this subject soon :-D

(I.e., deep, rem, etc.) Could you make a little calculator or provide the data so that I could find, for example, the likelihood of my fit bit being 10% wrong in regards to REM sleep for a given night. nice review. have you tested any garmin devices?? What do you think is the best sleep tracker?? I just purchased the latest polar device Grit X and it seems to give you a lot of detail. However, I don't have anyway of verifying the accuracy. thanks

Hi Dale, so I have only looked at a few devices so far. However, based on that (limited) experience: if you're looking for a (relatively) cheap sleep tracker that is also a fitness tracker, a FitBit appears to do quite well. If you really want to study sleep in detail specifically, the Dreem 2 appears to do quite well based on a scientific (non-peer-reviewed) paper I read. I have to say that the Oura ring and Mi Band 3 seemed to be sub-optimal. The Polar and Garmin devices I have not looked in to yet, so I cannot comment. Hope this helps at least a little bit

Have you tried Polar's or Garmin's solutions? They both have an athletic component that rates a wearer's autonomic nervous system recovery which I thought was very helpful (Ignite user) I may have to pick up a Charge 4 and wear both to sleep...

When the fit bit shows as being in light sleep, how often were you awake? Im just curious how often someone is awake when the charge 4 is showing as being asleep
