We have a look at how easy (or not) it is to fit a Nagaoka MP110 / Audio Technica VM95ml / Ortofon 2MR Red / Goldring E3 / Rega Exact - to a Rega Turntable

Very timely. I have just acquired a NAD 533 with a duff cart I am going to give to my daughter as her first turntable. AT 95E is what I was looking at and this helps immensely.

I'm 77 and back in th70s/80s got to be a bit of a dab hand at swopping cartridges un till I got a Grado F1 that one stayed quite a while. The ultimate arm and cartridge setup challenge would for me be fitting a cartridge and setting up a Hadcock Unipivot arm on a Thorens turntable or any suspended turntable come to that. The Grado, the Hadcock and the Thorens was a lovely combination, then I developed a tremor in one hand and that ended that. I remember spending wet Sunday afternoons trying to squeeze a little more out of that setup but the Hadcock despite it looking fragile never needed any fettling.

Best logical choice for all tonearms that have not interchangeable headshell is to choose cartridges which take different styli. For example ATVM95 C for used records and ML stylus for new condition records ✌️

I wish I saw this video before taking over 5 hours to get my MP200 aligned properly. I didn't know/think about left and right cartridge drift within the head shell. Great video Phil

Thinking of the MP200 with my P3 50th. How do you like that cart? thanks...
@leegodwin20716 ай бұрын
@@tima.478 Nice turn table. I really like the MP200 for carts at this price range I find it has a soft/warm voice which is sympathetic to the sound of vinyl but doesn't sacrifice details to my ear. With the right phono stage it has great dynamics. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect phono stage. There are other carts, like the 2M bronze (for example) which will give you more detail although I feel the voice of the record can get lost. Jazz, swing, classical, hip-hop Motown all sound great on this cart. It did take a long time to set it up in the tonearm so be prepared for that. Good luck on your venture
@tima.4786 ай бұрын
Thanks, it's a really decent deck, I'm just not in love with the Exact2. Everyone raves about that cart, for some reason it was just ok to me. Nothing wrong with it just seemed to be really finnicky if it isn't crystal clean. Maybe it's just not a good fit for my setup...Pioneer SX-1080 receiver, Elac Solano speakers, and Elac Varro Reference Series 10'" sub. And yeah, I heard the MP-200 was a pain because of the half open hole design. I ordered it about 3 hours ago so I'm all good. I do play a lot of Jazz, R&B, and 80's hits. Just got the Sade 6 album box set last week, can't wait to hear it on this cart. Thank you for your input, it is much appreciated. @@leegodwin2071

Just fitted the MP-200 this afternoon. WOW, WOW, WOW! I have had to turn some treble down as the highs are so much more crisp now. NEVER sounded like this with the Exact 2 that came with my P3. You were dead on, this is a really good cart. So much better than my Exact that I actually think my Exact has malfunctioned. I'm loving this setup so much more!@@leegodwin2071

Just to add,When I fit my cartridges I always use the Rega protractor,but also make sure the stylus tip to arm pivot distance is correct using a small tape measure.

For the goldring 1000 series, after you insert the screw upside down, get yourself a "ball end" allen key. With those you can turn screws at an angle. 👍🏽

I have a 1986 planar 2 and alignment takes about a minute with no issues using a pretty basic alignment protractor. I also have a year old p1 which is a nightmare to align with some inner groove jumping issues. I tried everything. Took it back to the dealer now its fine. But it's definitely not symmetrical.

Hey Phil, thanks for great video! I've swopped out the carbon cartridge on my Rega P1 with an Audio Technica ATVM95 ML, which I had my local hifi shop fit for me. The tech told me that the cue lever no longer works because the AT cartridge is bigger than the carbon. I tested it once I got it home and he's correct. Is there a way to fix this? I find manually dropping the needle onto the record to be disconcerting... Thanks mate

Hi Phil. I’ve just purchased a Rega planar 3 and fitted a new AT vm530en cartridge. I just wonder if I’ve done something wrong as the sound is very flat and uninspiring. Got this to replace a Project RPM1 with orthofon red 2m fitted thinking this was going to be a step up from that - but it sounds worse! Thanks mark.
@nezukokamado58884 ай бұрын
thank you for this informative video... I have a 2012 Rega P1 and many said u need add spacers due to different in cartridge height but i dont see you adding any spacer... why? The Carbon is 17mm H and only the VM95 have the same height at 17.2mm. 2M Red/ Blue are 19mm which is 2mm taller.
@carlosflup5 ай бұрын
Great educational video. Thanks! You end the video by saying none of those cartridges need a spacer. Since the Goldring 1012 came as a surprise in the end and wasn't part of the list (description), were you including the Goldring 1000 series as cartridges that don't need a spacer? (Rega Planar 2 owner, btw) Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the video, it's something I can do in theory but still makes me nervous. Question - except for Rega cartridges, 2MRs, and other low profile cartridges, arent Regas supposed to have the spacer shims installed to achieve correct VTA?

just a heads up Phil, nothing against your setup procedure but kuzma Turntables advises strongly against using pliers to fit the cable connectors, they say use a pair of tweezers as people often put to much pressure in the pins and break or mince them up.

Something I prefer to let my dealer do, with cartridges without a removable stylus ! I wonder why you fitted the cartridges with a removable stylus with it in place, though ? (Albeit with the guard in place.)
@garyausten59396 ай бұрын
When I eventually decide to upgrade my P2, would it be a better investment to change the tonearm (RB220) or cartridge (AT-VM540ML)?
@alexandrefernandes62864 ай бұрын
I've had the VM540ML. It was in a Thorens not a REGA. Aluminium, light arm as the REGA one. I love the VM540 ML. It is so musical, I just wanted to listen to records with it. I replaced it with a VM740, which has aluminium body. The 540 is the best bang for buck of the two, hardly any difference between them and cheaper. I guarantee you you will love the 540.

I've seen specific turntable "tweezers" sold which fit snuggly around the cable plugs, but are shaped so as not to crush them. Should/could the stylus have a cover on until the last minute?
@RSHedgehog7 ай бұрын
I bought a pair of these tweezers a couple of years ago and found they didn't work. When they fully close they form a circle which is suppose to grip rear of cartridge tags. I (and others), have found they gripped too loosely and so didn't work.
@neil_down_south7 ай бұрын
@@RSHedgehog oh no that's not good. I don't know whether there are different brands or the plugs vary much in their diameter?

Late here - to me - at 70 + I started with a New. AR. T' table. ... the key part is the very tiny, fragile wires / connects to the back of carrtridge. break one of them in a molded arm head and you've got a 2 cent t'table. (did I mention, fragile ?) they SHOULD have the SME / technics style removable H'shell, or even better the ' plug into end of arm ' style that came and went maybe in the 1980 's ? How these companies don't even think of actual users...

Vinyl is also about the process, cleaning, handling the record, album art etc. I actually love the sound of a vinyl record playing, just reminds me of when I was a wee bit big...so nostalgia is also a big part of the vinyl experience. Nothing against CD's but they do lack the connection you get from playing a record. Might as well be making toast, lol. 😂
