Backpacks are fine, especially on larger hawks. There is a small but real risk of them cutting into the skin at the shoulder or keel unless perfectly fit, and I’ve seen these injuries in merlins. The neck mount is less invasive but obviously adds a little time and effort to prepping the bird before each flight.
