I honestly don’t know. You’ll have to check the regs and maybe ask someone in the club. We made sure in Louisiana that indoor housing is kosher

I agree. And it actually was her. I zoomed in on some stills and you can see the nano transmitter around her neck. While she was flying I was luring and she came over but never dipped a wing. She was fine. A good bird, I just got sloppy with her at the end of the season. Did better with my next one. :-)

Hi Matt, we met in January at the Texas Hawking Association’s field meet (I’m the one who gets carsick while car hawking!). I’m replicating this setup as best I can for my own future kestrel. If I may ask, where did you get the leash/swivel? Did you make it yourself? I’m having trouble finding one like it, and I want to make sure I’m using the same kind. Thanks so much!

Always loved the way Merlin's fly. Slightly unrelated, but would terrain/habitat shown in this video be suitable for falconry with a red-tail? Our area is mostly flat, open farm land. We also have vineyards and the occasional orchard. I've read that RT are very adaptable but wouldn't want to stack the deck too much. Thanks!

Redtails can do well in open country. Just depends on what there is to hunt and how much of it.

@@matthewmullenix3120Good to know. Most of the videos I see show them hunting squirrel in forests or rabbit in deserts. With all the agriculture in our area, I'm guessing our redtails get by on gophers, moles, voles, rats, mice, and maybe even roadkill?

Actually, it is an insult as well as a misnomer to call this pretty little falcon a"sparrow hawk ". Actually the true sparrow hawk is an European species that closely resembles the American Sharp shunned hawk in color and markings. 😊

I am a old school Falconee , got my first European kestrel with 12 years old 1978 and went from there , ; about carrring ! My two cents worth , take your time , dont make them feel your robbing them of there kill , Pigeon meat as a trade off for a old stinky starling works , the titbiting is for sure a good thing and works , we used to walk around our Passage Goshawks while training. They be on the lure , with something to keep them busy for a while chicken neck 😊 and then walk circles around the Gos later included a Dog . The approach was important 😂 I had a coopers imprint,that would fly to my fist if it was something small like a sparrow and then Mantel 😂 and act crazy 😮 . I actually enjoyed coopers and there crazy ways . But for small Falcons Coopers are Dangerous - so please take care your good looking Falcons , they also know they are in danger while on the ground, in nature a Kestrel or Merlin after catching mouse or Bird would fly to a high perch to be able to see Danger approaching, even the Gyr or Peregrine are the same ,and have to keep a look out for the Golden and others .

If you mean as a mews or weathering yard, it will depend on your state falconry regs. In Louisiana, tethered birds are allowed indoors, provided it’s a secure location and has all the other requirements for hawk housing.

@matthewmullenix3120 In in LA . We have a fairly large high ceiling s shed with a clear fiberglass ceiling and wall. The backyard is a sort of bird sanctuary where wild birds come feed with the chickens. If we get a baby falcon will it stay in the yard or fly way off? There are crows in the area.

@matthewmullenix3120

Part of the answer is how much the bird is fed and for how long prior to release. Generally, once the birds are significantly above their best response weight for 10 days or so, they are quite wild. Merlins are a little different in this regard because generally flown heavier anyway, and usually they become familiar with the hunting field and so do often stick around. In fact, this merlin came back overhead the next morning and while she kept her distance from me, allowed me to toss her some food, which she took and ate. She was gone the next morning and I expect migrated back to the area where she was born, as it was spring and time for that move.
