I asked. You answered. So here it is! My first attempt at fitting lighting strips to OO gauge coaches. The coach is a Bachmann Mk1 in BR livery (c1970s) and the lighting strip is a Train Tech CL2 'warm' lighting strip powered by a CR2032 battery. Please feel free to leave a comment, give the video the thumbs up and let me know what else you'd like to see! Enjoy

Even though i'm more of a Maunsell coach fan, i have to say that the LED's make a dramatic effect on those MK1's. Looking forward to seeing more diy videos like this from you in the future.

If you ever go to make the lights track powered you will need to a resistors because the CR2032 uses 3.7v and track power is usually between 0-16 volts(depending on your dc or dcc system)

I've just fitted 5 of the strip lights to my Victorian railways coaches, to good effect. Two coaches have the tail light. The motion sensors are very very sensitive, just knocking the train table will turn them on.

DCC has too many problems--that's why I do DC only! Another thought for you. You can get Loksound ESU current collectors (#50707) for about $13.75 which includes shipping from Litchfield trains. You get enough to do 8 wheel sets. You cut them apart and mount (super glue/epoxy) each one to opposite wheels and it provides a pickup current from the track and a return through the opposite wheel. Of course you have to use metal wheel sets with one wheel insulated. Unless I find some more scrap copper, I cannot even come close to the price of the Loksound ESU parts. What's neat about this is you only need one pair of the little pickups which you cut into half--one for each wheel. Cheers.

Iv'e got six Bachmann mark 1 porthole coaches in blood & custard , when i attempted to open one up by trying to remove one of the pipes to the end of coach the tiny lug which holds it in place snapped of, so iv'e been to nervous to try any more. On top of that some of the springs that hold connectors in place have become disconnected. These springs are inside the body of the coach so cannot be accessed without removing the top of the coach ? Dose anyone have any suggestions.

Was your decoder a Bachmann 36-557 by any chance? These are relatively new and from my experience they are poor performers (I've tested 3). The decoder is a custom unit made by soundtraxx and supplied to Bachmann only. If you can find the older and much better 36-554 you should be ok. If not I would get something else like Lenz, TCS or a Hornby Sapphire. Stay away from the Bachmann 36-557!!!

Fantastic vid, however just one little thing... When you were whispering in the dark and the coach light came on just for a second or two and went straight out, you said it's not supposed to do that, but actually if the coach light only sees a tiny little bit of movement it just comes on for a second or so, then if it sees a little more movement it stays on for it's 4 mins :) Not a criticism to your vid at all, just purely to let you know! Looking forward to the next one. Kevin.

Toothpicks are great for painting small stuff like people figs. And again, I would stay the hell away from enamels unless you're sure what you're painting is resin. Is that the only strip Train-Tech does? It seems like it's meant for a full brake or somesuch.

Would it not be cheaper to buy a large spool of strip LED's off of eBay, then solder a small battery pack to it, which can then be stuck into multiple coaches?
@37116comet
@37116comet 9 жыл бұрын
You''ve probably already figured, but Bachmann's 36-557 decoder isn't compatible with Hornby's Select for some reason. A thing to remember though, the Select isn't NMRA compliant, which the Hornby Elite is, and the 36-557 works with my Elite. Also to support this, on Hatton's website where the Select is sold, there is an accompanying note saying 'Please note that this controller cannot be used with locomotives with the Bachmann 36-557 21-pin decoder fitted.' Nice one bud. Was it the positioning of the light strip that just fell between the compartment that made it 'lights out'? Looks like you forgot to put the people in the carriage! However, you did show me the truly important bit and I feel confident enough to have a go at it myself. Mother in Law is happy to put up the money for the lighting strips, so jobs a goodun !! I have painted up many a figure and with a little, or maybe a lot, of patience and practise I got really good at it. I do use acrylic paints as it is so so so much quicker than enamel. Thanks for a great video and I have subscribed. Excellent work, look forward to more of your vids.

You need to learn to do your own electronics as I do all my own coach & caboose lighting. Of course I only do DC for my trains. I purchased LED strip lighting, mini full wave bridge rectifiers (the little square ones) and some 3300uF capacitors from fleaBay for under $15.00 which came from China. I made my own pickups out of some copper salvaged from an old computer and lit up an REA (Railway Express Agency) coach. The LED strips can be cut apart at every 3rd LED and have the ballast (current limiting) resistors already installed on each 3 LED section and, of course, they're all 12 volt DC. The LED strips have adhesive on the back so they can be mounted to the interior roofing. I have also converted all my illuminated coaches that have incandescent lighting to LED strip lighting. I probably spent maybe $2.00 per coach. Still have over 10 cabooses to do along with 4 more Riverossi coaches. The LED strip lighting is bright white, which was too bright for my needs. Sooooo, I painted each little LED with some yellow acrylic paint and now they are quite fantastic looking with the glow of period correct yellow lighting. I think I used about 12 LED's per coach and the roll of LED strip lighting contained 300 LED's. So this goes to show you, you can do this quite on the cheap. All my lighting gets its power from the tracks. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee (and yes I'm a Ham)

Rubbish! Expensive kits.. how to do it: without hacking chunks deep notches out of the ends. Biggest capacitor you can find, to hide in the toilet. LED’s come from bright components. A handful of resistors and a bridge rectifier. I have heard of people using veroboard/strip board/ circuit board.. but why bother! If you are clever enough with a soldering iron, just use solid core telephone wire, Tris.😎🙏👍
