I understand your frustration, this trilogy was definitely a tying up of everything. That's hard when you don't want it to end. I'd say it took me a week after finishing this for me to fully process the ending. I wanted that last chapter and felt that without it, I didn't get the closure I wanted. Having said that, there are scenes in here that to me at least were perfect. His crown, Kettricken, Motley and Paragon to name a few. I'm re reading them, must be a gluten for punishment ;)

Yes, Paragon's ending was perfect! I absolutely loved having Paragon and Fitz meet as well.

I loved the ending, sad ends are the best, they mirror real life.. besides he bonded the fool at the end, character arc resolved, the fact he allowed the fool to die with him proves it..

I just watched all of your Robin Hobb videos and I have to say great work. I loved your suggestion for an alternate ending. Your guacamole shirt made me laugh as did your banana based humor. The ending made me cry and I wish things hadn't been quite so dark and brutal. I did enjoy several of the loose ends getting tied up during the final trilogy. Thanks for all of the great content!

Yeah I really agree Fitz lacks growth in this one. He grew in Farseer and then again in Tawny mam but in FF he feels just stuck. Glad I'm not the only one. I kinda thought his arc would be finding his agency and telling everyone who keeps demanding of him to f off, but he was completely robbed of that in the end (even Nighteyes didn't let him choose death!). Althernatively finding trust and relying to others as others rely on him would've been another excellent arc, as you pointed out. Just finally finding that place where he is his own man. Also you had my exact thoughts of the dragon-carving ending. He didn't choose it. And him and the Fool were... no. No.

It's kind of disappointing all around. And this series is so beloved and good in farseer and TM that it's hard to accept how disappointing the ending is. Thanks for watching!

It would be very hard to grow considering he lost Molly then lost Bee, nearly lost the Fool and the back of his mind Nighteyes. In the process of losing Chade also. It is a lot to deal with all at once. Hes a dad hes on parental instinct as well as a wolfs to protect Bee.

@@benpettit7787 I agree… he’d been through so much. In this trilogy it was him mostly surviving (in a flight or fight response) with little time for healing and growing. I do agree though with Chloe that the ending could have been better… it was way too sad for me. Would have liked for a more hopeful ending after the long journey we’d been on!

Fun discussion of character arcs, and what might make them better. It seems that is what makes you love a book: whether the characters actually change and improve. Funny: "Big girl responsibilities, like burning bodies." Nice drawing scene. Great editing - it adds to the communication of your meaning.

I think carving the Dragon happened just as it should to happen. After all it was Bees destiny. Bee was driving force what made it happen not Fitz. But also Fools joining with Fitz Dragon was as it have should be done, couse nighteyes, Fitz and fool, 3 different personalitys that make one whole thing. It was like Fitz accepting his memorys end of last series to be whole again. It was same thing and actually they didnt have much choice bees have been orcestrated it for years she has always knows she has to become destroyer, carvever of fates and whe has to greate wolf of the west. She didnt always have all details but as she experienced a life learned about nighteyes and fool she set plans on motion by writing a diary and manipulating fool and others.

Great discussion! I agree with many of your points. So good for closure to watch others discuss ROTE 💔😢 Just finished the last book a couple days ago… I think I’ll need a few more to process it.

I think I'm mostly going to agree with you here. I felt disappointed with Fool's Fate when I read it. After reading Assassin's Fate, I feel like I'm going to leave that as the canon ending in my mind. Too much Bee, whom I liked but didn't really want as the main character, Fool was a jerk in this trilogy and pretty unlikable, not enough growth for Fitz who I'm incredibly disappointed never bonded again, and a completely underwhelming end for Chade. For shame.

Ugh yes Fitz was so annoying and unlikeable by the end. Welcome to my comment section! I've actually been a fan of your channel for years. I originally discovered you through your Dresden Files videos

Thanks for the discussion topics. Sounds like you wanted a fairytale ending, a happier ending even than tawny man and that was disappointing to you. I mean, I see your point, but that's also not the point, I think. The point IS the pain. Not that Fitz can now make lots of fiends. Fitz's ark DOES exist in this trilogy. It's him accepting his public role as a royal. This is shown in how even his death scene is a display for onlookers. He no longer runs from people, he sits at the dinner table, and makes lengthy royal goodbyes when leaving to Clerres, for example. Fitz and the Fool's troubled relationship IS resolved here, when they finally merge into their wolf. Before this, the Fool thinks Fotz hates him. I agree I would've liked more chumminess, and Amber passed me off, but it worked.

I can fully see where Fitz's trust issues with friends come from. He gave it all to Fool, who then just left and was away for a long time, not even dropping a line. And when he finally comes back, he is instantly demanding things from him, another near-impossible task despite he now has a young daughter to take care of. And when you think of it, that's what most of his relationships have been all take and very little give. As a whole, I thought the bitter-sweet nature of how this ended the saga of Fitz is quite fitting, even to the somewhat deceitful fashion Bee makes Fool enter the stone wolf, knowing despite all the strife, Fool is the 3rd part of her father's soul, even if she doesn't like it. I do agree, that the way Fitz got his hands silvered was a bit too convoluted for its own good. Sometimes simpler is better. Just have him be there, waking up from near death, find the vial near him, and dab his hands as a final act of desperation. Same result, much more effective. Then again, you can also chalk the whole bit on the notion of how unlikely the opened-up future was, just how unlikely the birth of Bee was.

I had a great time with this series. But I gotta say, that was not a good ending. And Fitz was written weird. We were told that he was a master spy and assassin. But now he is oblivious to things happening around him. And whoops! I accidentally stabbed my best friend in the chest five times! For nine books, Rob Hobb has been throwing all these people in dungeons and torturing them. The fool got his fingernails ripped off. And i feel like for half of the series, Fitz was lying in bed with bandages all over him. By the time we get to the end of the series, it turns out Fitz hadn't suffered enough. So he slowly gets eaten alive for weeks. I was hoping this was all building up to a satisfying ending, but it doesn't turn out that way. The author is obsessed with these memory stone dragons, and I never quite understood why I was supposed to care about them. Despite that rant, still really liked the series and I'm glad I listened to it. I mostly just hated the ending.

Yes! The ending was definitely too focused on the skill dragons. And, too "Fitz is always hurt." I think, in general, stories are better when they aren't afraid to hurt their characters. But when it keeps happening over and over, it loses its weight (especially if everyone can just heal magically from physical injuries anyway).
