@@chrisw3024 The way I see it, Counterspell actually negates the magic in the area instantaneously thus countering the spell. So it doesn't matter if you can target the caster itself.

I have a improved mirror image spell I made. It makes 1d2/ spell level, but they make their own moves and "actions". they don't do damage or make the spell effect, but if you have 8 mages doing things from boxing you, fireballing you, lightning bolting you, and casting Azzer's Wonderful Allies again, on top of every time you do hit the main mage he teleports to another place. Yeah it makes fighting him a nightmare.

"I never walk into a place I don't know how to walk out of." Shield, Absorb Elements, Feather Fall, Dimension Door, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere... I need them for all my casters, that can pick them. Sometimes bad things come your caster's way, like attacks, elemental area attacks, the ground at high speed, too much to deal with or you just end up alone with a dragon. These spells help you deal with these unfortunate events. Because there will be times when the best idea is to cast Resilient Sphere on youself, and then sing: "I'm a little wizard here frail and small, this is my robe and here's my trusty wand. When I get in trouble I scream and shout, then I bubble and teleport out." Performance is the best skill, for any class. :)

@@C3Squared Barkskin makes your AC become 16 if it's lower, so if you have a natural armor of 13 it becomes 16 when Barkskin is in effect
@gerbendekker3273
@gerbendekker3273 Жыл бұрын
@@C3Squared Barkskin and natural armor are both ways to calculate a creature's AC. The creature picks one or the other way to calculate their AC. Bonuses add to any base calculation for a creature's AC. For example, let's say a druid with 14 Dex (+2 modifier), leather armor (AC = 11 + Dex mod), and no shield casts _barkskin_ on themselves to set their AC to at least 16 instead of their normal 13. They then use their Wild Shape feature to transform into a giant lizard that has both an AC of 12 and natural armor. The druid can choose between _barkskin_ 's AC of 16 or the giant lizard's natural armor AC of 12. If the party's paladin then also casts _shield of faith_ on the wild shaped druid, the druid then adds the +2 bonus to AC from the spell regardless of which base AC they chose to use. If the party's wizard then also casts _haste_ on the wild shaped druid, the druid then adds the +2 bonus to AC from the spell regardless of which base AC they chose to use. The total bonuses from _shield of faith_ and _haste_ now equal +4, which is added to the druid's choice of AC 16 or AC 12. If the party's cleric then also casts _warding bond_ on the wild shaped druid, the druid then adds the +1 bonus to AC from the spell regardless of which base AC they chose to use. The total bonuses from _shield of faith, haste, and warding bond_ now equal +5, which is added to the druid's choice of AC 16 or AC 12. Etc.

@Scorpious187
@Scorpious187 4 жыл бұрын
In a campaign I'm playing in, my Life Domain cleric threw Aid on herself and the two wizards in the party. She also used Inspiring Leader to give everyone in the party another 13 HP. One of the wizards had 25 hp. Giving him +5 max HP and 13 temp HP put him at 43 hp. During the party's journey we were helped by an NPC. This NPC helped us sneak through a town full of hostile enemies, but she got caught as we were leaving and had to flee. My character sent her a couple messages to figure out if she was ok, found out she was very much not ok, and told the wizard to go back and get her since he had Dimension Door. He went back, found her, cast Invisibility on the both of them and ran back to be within range to DD on the far side of the town. Just before he got to where he would be able to make it back to us with a second DD, he took a critical dagger hit from a rogue who had Truesight and saw him coming. *42 damage.* Without me having cast Aid and using Inspiring Leader on him that morning, our wizard would have been rolling a new character. And my character would have felt like absolute garbage for getting him killed.

Whenever I play a cleric, I almost always drop AID at the start of an adventuring day using one of my higher level spell slots. I *never* regret it, and I've had people limp out from a fight on 3 hp without having fallen over all the time with this spell. Really effective at keeping people up, they can heal into it on a short rest, and it doesn't take concentration. Super effective.

Something not discussed about Aid: it increases current hit points. Not only is it a great buff, it's an emergency "I need to get 3 people up from unconsciousness now". It's the only way I can think of that a Paladin can do this.
@S0nyb1ack
@S0nyb1ack 4 жыл бұрын
I might have ruled that wrong, but I allowed an oath of the crown Paladin to get allies back up even after they went down to 0 with their channel divinity ( though this part of the unconscious condition makes me think it wouldn't work RAW: "unaware of its surroundings", so I probably buffed their channel divinity significantly with that ruling - which I'm OK with given the realtive negative reactions I see on reddit about Crown Paladins)

If they already had Aid cast on them, I don't think I'd allow that-- replacing the previous Aid would subtract the HP buffed from that casting, and then give the new HP, leaving them at 0 still. And if they *didn't* already have Aid cast on them-- why not?? It lasts eight hours and is a great spell for casting *before* you get into any trouble, when your Actions aren't life or death resources.
@ceegee7075
@ceegee7075 3 жыл бұрын
@@MsNathanv The problem with your ruling is negative hp doesn't exist in 5e. So, yes, the current hp would be reduced from the previous Aid, but only down to 0, the lowest it can go. The new Aid then applies its own hp, and they are no longer at 0. "A creature's current hit points (usually just called hit points) can be any number from the creature's hit point maximum down to 0."

For your consideration: absorb elements, this spell falls to the other end of defense. Instead of proactive defense it is a flexible choice to avoid multiple big hits that might kill you and it is just a reaction. Another kinda unorthodox defense spell I like even though is is concentration is wall of wind, I know what you are thinking but it is like blanket arrow protection and functions better than you think.

A very slept-on buff in 5E is Warding Bond. It is a bit situational in that it requires a certain party makeup, but if your party includes a front-line melee character with a relatively small HP pool, such as a Monk, Ranger, Rogue, Valor/Swords Bard or Bladesinger, the Cleric can effectively double their HP pool. In addition, the Cleric can cast touch-based healing on themselves to shrug off the damage coming to them without putting their bodies near the melee combatants. The spell doesn't require concentration either, so the cleric is free to have another concentration-based buff up as well.

I was playtesting a party where all three characters had PEG in their spell list. I found it was best to have them cast it on each other in a round robin rather than casting on themselves. That way when someone took a hit and lost concentration, the PEG that got broken was on someone ELSE, which helps prevent the death spiral that can result if you PEG yourself and then lose concentration.

I think Blink is often overlooked but it‘s still a nice spell as a defensive option and some minor mobility its basically 50% chance to be untargetable between your turns and when you reappear at the start of the turn within 10ft from the original spot, so useful for getting out of some melee enemy‘s reach without triggering opportunity attacks nor wasting an action to disengage it‘s also neat that blink doesnt require concentration either so it can easily be stacked with mirror image and additionally some concentration defensive spell, like blur for example the only real draw back of blink imo is that one can‘t get healed if it triggered a real neat use of a 3rd spell slot

Based off of super limited knowledge of multiclassing so if something forbids this, someone let me know, thanks I feel a cleric / other sorc subclass hybrids probably more effective due to the way sorcerers gain spells. Having cleric there let's you have all the spells, not just 2 a level which you cant really change much, and you gain another sorcerer origin and you can devote your sorcerer spells to different things.
@Scorpious187
@Scorpious187 4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the few benefits of being a sorcerer (twinned spell abilities, quickened spell abilities, distance-enhancing abilities, etc.) are far outweighed by the standard Cleric subclasses. For example, a Grave Domain cleric can cast Spare The Dying at a range of 30 feet (which means it actually makes the spell useful). Clerics get more powerful spells to add to their arsenal, and they get more of them. I compared the DS Sorcerer to my Life Domain cleric because I was considering playing a DS in another campaign, and the cons of doing so far outweighed the pros. (Ended up playing an Arcane Trickster rogue instead, since we had a bard who could do heals.)

@@Scorpious187 personally, my interest in playing a divine soul sorcerer is largely for roleplay purposes and for fulfilling the archetype of a radiant/fire damage dealing caster who sometimes heals. If you're familiar with the Fire Emblem series, I'm building a character similar to Micaiah from Radiant Dawn. I'm prioritizing roleplay over mechanics for the class choice, but within the class I'd love to know about some of the tricks and tips.

This unconsciousness ends if you regain any hit points. The last line is the important part you regained hit points so your now not unconcious

I run a low-hitpoint high-lethality game (it makes gauging NPC combat power easier when everyone has about the same HP and speeds things up when fights are short and high-impact), and Mirror Image is insanely good, especially for spellcasters who want to concentrate on a spell. Plus, if a martial character wants to, they can take 1 spellcaster level to get it for themselves and up their tanking power significantly.

One thing to note about Mirror Image, it is not concentration, and so you can stack it with blur to make each attack on you have disadvantage AND possibly not even target you. It's really fun for front line mage warriors.

Mirror Image + Slippers of Spider Climbing + Disguise Self is how I spent a whole fight running around the ceiling looking like four goblin chefs. We were a party of three low-level characters in our first-ever campaign facing a doppelgänger, bugbear, drow archer, and dire wolf at the same time, and it probably would have been a TPK if Mirror Image hadn’t kept me up. I would say that holding aid as a ranged multi-res healing spell is also a good option, especially if this is just the first of two or three hairy encounters to come, and you are aiming for a short rest in between. That would be the way to maximize its usefulness, though at the cost of an action in combat. 5 HP may not stop you from going down, but it will certainly bring you back up. That, plus its use as a pre-combat buff really do make it a great spell, like you said. I first noticed how favorably it compares to heal at an upcast when my Paladin hit level 5. Had no idea heroes' feast was a 24 duration. Wow.

Love your videos guys. Do have to say, should be careful saying Aid does anything with Constitution Modifier as it doesn't, and that could cause some unnecessary confusion for newer players trying to figure out hitpoints. That being said, great video and still agree Aid is AMAZING. Especially on a warlock ( assuming you multiclass 3 levels into cleric to get the spell known ), where you can cast it at 5th level on a short rest getting the spell back after giving 3 party members 20 more hp. Oh and the one risk of applying mage armor to a Dex ally such as rogue, ranger, etc....is it can be dispelled and their ac drops to 10 + dex for the remainder of the fight. That is, if you are fighting enemy spell casters. For those that care for the exact percentages for mirror images to sell it to people for some reason, here it is: 3 Mirror Images up still - 75 percent chance of hitting mirror image. ( 6 or higher on 1d20 ) 2 Mirror Images up still - 65 percent chance of hitting mirror image. ( 8 or higher on 1d20 ) 1 Mirror Images up still - 50 percent chance of hitting mirror image. ( 11 or higher on 1d20 )

The phantasm being the mirror images surrounding the opponent and attacking (Shadow Clone style). And if they somehow manage to hit me, they only destroy a mirror image, keeping phantasmal force up.

A spell that I almost never hear people talk about is Shield of Faith. It’s a first level spell, only takes a bonus action to cast, lasts for 10 minutes, and raises a target’s AC by 2. It requires concentration, but it can make any singular member of your team 10% harder to hit. It’s not something you want to use at higher levels, but at lower levels it can make a tank immune to most attacks and can help lower AC teammates not get destroyed by attackers. Not to mention that due to the cast time being a bonus action, it lets you protect an ally from up to 60ft away and still smack an enemy for damage on the same turn.

You forgotten Armor of Agathys, a really good first level defensive buff spell for warlocks only. It gives you Five Temporary Hit Points per level its cast at, and as long as you have those temp hp, if an enemy deals any damage to you, they take 5 cold damage per level of the spell. If your party Bard has cast Armor of Agathys on himself at, say, 8th level, he now has an extra 40 Temporary HP without requiring concentration, and if any mean enemies try to assault him, they take 40 cold damage if they deal 1 or more damage to him. This spell lasts an hour and is a really good option for bladelocks or squishy warlocks.

I played a warlock once that had a familiar through the Magic Initiate feat. Armor of Shadows turned out to be a great investment because, early on, the barbarian had less con than dex, the rogue was wearing only leather, the blood hunter was also only wearing leather, and the wizard didn't want to prepare mage armor themself if I could just pass it out like candy, especially with my familiar (since mage armor is a touch spell). Once the Barbarian started bumping up their con, and the rogue and blood hunter got some magic studded leather, there was less use for it, but it still kept the party kicking in those early levels, putting most of use as 16 or even 17 AC at level 2.

considering the Blur spell is a second level spell that imposes disadvantage on all attack rolls against the target AND requires concentration, the whole “close your eyes and fight blind” trick isn’t a big deal. you’re essentially letting them have blur while still concentrating on a different spell, which is a loss for you. if you still don’t like that, use medusa rules and say that you must avert your eyes for the entire round in order for the trick to work, meaning you’ve turned their mirror image into Greater Invisibility, a 4th (!!!) level spell.

Ive always liked the really upcasted Armor or Agathys. While an unconventional use of a 9th level slot, having anything that hits you take 45 cold damage per attack until you lose every single temporary hit point. If something hits you 3 times at 20 damage each, that is 15 real hp loss for 135 damage dealt, also lasts for an hour with no concentration!

Mirror Image is crazy good for Arcane Trickster Rogues. It's an Illusion spell so you don't have to spend one of your coveted any-school picks on it, you have high Dex so even your duplicates have reasonable AC, and even though you have less spell slots than other magic users, most of your offensive capabilities are coming from sneak attack anyway so you can afford to spend your spell slots on defensive tools. Plus, rogues sometimes have this awkward problem where they end up so high in the initiative order that they can't figure out how to get sneak attack on turn 1 if there's nobody in melee and nowhere to hide. That can be the perfect time to cast Mirror Image and set yourself up for the rest of the fight.

So can you cast Mage armor on a Circle of the Moon druid and it is still active when he transforms into a beast? What if the druid is wearing leather armor and the mage armor was ineffective at the time of casting? Could be interesting because there are some beasts like the Giant Toad that are pretty cool in terms of hit points and skills, but have an abysmal AC. With mage armor the Toad would be buffed to a decent 14 (instead of 11).

Where Mirror Image is concerned, I think I'd rule that closing one's eyes and accepting the disadvantage is viable. At that point, you simply resort to the written mechanic of targeting a single space--which you happen to know is occupied--and you clear your mind of thinking "Which one do I hit?" as a trade for not seeing your target. Besides, we all know you hit the one in the middle.

I want to give an honorable mention shoutout to Sanctuary. First level bonus action, lasts a minute with no concentration. If your character is focused on healing/buffs/support (and not attacking or targeting the enemy directly), it forces them to make a wisdom save to even think about targeting you. That's requiring them to succeed on an extra d20 roll to try to hit you, which is as good as forcing disadvantage on every attack against you. Often better, since it also affects targeted spells, and bruisers tend to have lower wisdom scores than attack modifiers. Mathematically, it's usually better than just having a higher AC. Just watch out for area effect spells. Meanwhile you can mop up damage from your allies, buff them, remove debuffs from them, even dispel/counterspell - all while preventing your foes from using "gank the healer" targeting strategies. That's pretty powerful for a 1st level spell, and still effective in high-CR encounters - often more so with a well balanced party.

It may be incredibly situational, kind of expensive, and is not really a buff per say, but Arcane Lock could theoretically be an amazing defensive measure in an emergency. Okay, but hear me out. Say you’re in a dungeon struggling against a powerful enemy. Everybody is low on hit points and aren’t being given a chance to heal. You get everybody to fall back to a nearby room with a door. You get everybody inside, slam the door, then cast Arcane Lock on it. Now you have an improvised barrier between you and the enemy that can buy you at least a round to heal up and buff and prepare for a second assault while the enemy pounds on a door that essentially has a +10 bonus to its AC.
