FIVE DAY CATALINA 22 CRUISE in SW Florida

This was an interesting cruise .... between contrary wind, lack of wind (and therefor lack of fuel, ice, food, beer, etc), bad weather forecasts, NO weather forecasts ... we literally had to change our plans every single day.
We never made it to Marathon Key like we hoped, but we still had five days and nights of fun and adventure on the eastern gulf of Mexico! We put 154 miles under the keel, and we made it safely back to our starting point without running out of anything - although the ice was getting pretty critical! As usual, I was a total slacker when it came to taking video footage. ;) Thanks for watching anyway!!

we figured out gas for the icw, and our yamaha 5 got 7mpg. that was on a 3 ton boat. the same yamaha on a lighter boat , 1700 lbs, got 7.5 or so. if I'm motorsailing, like in long stretches of the icw, once the boat is up to about 4 knots speed, I cut the throttle down. You're seeing the world at the speed of an ox cart anyway,

what solar panel holders do you use? selfmade? I have a similar sized boat and think your way to install solar panels is quite cool

Yes, they are (were) DIY, but I have dramatically improved on them. Check out our latest video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9WbfJB6upiVc4k.html

I keep liking these Catalina 22's. Thinking wing keel but?
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 5 жыл бұрын
If you keep her in a slip, a wing keel would be fantastic. By far the best way to go, IMO. If trailer sailing, I'd slightly prefer a swing. 6" less draft, for launching in the creeks and mud puddles we have to sometimes. And six inches lower while trailering her down the highway. I have been told swings point better than wings, but I don't know firsthand. I do feel like Daydream (she's a swing) points quite well. Get yourself a wing and let's race. :)

@@geneneill530 Swing or wing, I like them both. Makes sense that the swing would point somewhat higher because of the depth, board down. Yes we have a slip and a steep grade launch ramp close by. I'm thinking less moving parts with the wing. All good. Happy sailing.

Hi Gene. Could you tell me about your solar panel setup. I am running a chartplotter and a Raymarine st1000 autotiller.

Leonardo, we have two 30W Renogy panels on a Victron MPPT 75/15 controller. The panels are mounted with SeaDog rail clamps which allow me to rotate the panels up and down. The battery is a Trojan 24TMX. The system has always kept up with our power use, which is pretty heavy. Here is an out-take from our Tortugas video, showing how the panels are mounted: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9uVlJBhl6_UY40.html EDIT: I just realized this video is really old! The one in my link is how we do them now. Things have evolved from the old PVC-pipe setup in this video. :)

Would you mind making a tutorial on how to properly flake the sail on your Cat 22 as seen at 4:48?
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, good eye! But now I'm afraid of what ELSE you may have noticed! Whatever it is, I promise I can explain. LOL Anyway .... Carlotta stands at the mast facing aft. I release the halyard from the cockpit, but she keeps her foot on it at the mast to control the sail's descent. I stand straddling the cockpit benches, holding the boom against me. We flake together, first to one side then the other, as Carlotta slowly lowers the sail with her foot. She stops it altogether after every few folds while I throw a tie around it. (Quick-release reef knot.) I work my way forward as we go, until I can't reach from the cockpit anymore, and then she takes over from there. Make sense?

What is your motor sailing range?
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really tough question! It varies WILDLY, depending on how fast you go and what the conditions are. All I can say is, we carry six gallons with us and have never really come close to running out. I do recommend more than the 3-gallon tank most C22's seem to have, if you plan to cruise far and wide. Nobody ever regretted having a little extra fuel on hand. :)
