This was our longest cruise, until late 2019. We sailed from Marco Island, FL, south to East Cape (the very end of the Florida mainland) and back, with a 24-hr stopover in Little Shark River while a "norther" came through. GREAT fun!

the cooler water drawws the heat off the islands, hence,the wind, hot air is pulled to cooler laces, so you alwys get wind in the eveniing . so you can know what will happen when you anchor in the open, but, the bugs get blow away

These videos are very interesting for me. I sail catamarans, in Miami, and am thinking about getting a sailboat like yours. I was thinking, I should get a 25' -30' boat. But after seeing what you can do with a 22", I see the advantages. Especially sailing around the keys, where there can be shallow depths. I'm mostly worried, I'm the kind of sailor, that would hit a reef, or something. Concentrating on the wind and sails, and not the obstacles under the water.

10mo out from your comment, but I've been sailing around the gulf coast for a while in a catalina 25 with a swing keel. It's not the best for ocean sailing as it's a bit bouncy, but not dangerous as long as you maintain the winch and pivot mechanism properly. It only draws 2.7ft with the keel up and if you run aground or hit a rock with the keel down it'll just swing, so all the same advantages as the 22 just a bit bigger. The 25 has a lot more room inside than the 22 and would be significantly more comfortable over a weekend trip. The pop top is a really nice feature. If you wanted to do actual longer trips like heading to the bahamas then it'd be much better to get a 27 with a fixed keel and inboard diesel. Outboards on the 22/25 are way easier to maintain but have a lot of trouble keeping the prop submerged in rougher seas. The 25 is the sweet spot for me, comfortable and large enough to sleep on for a few days but simple and cheap to maintain. My goal is always to spend more time sailing than i do working on the boat and so far I'm ahead.

@@Matt-ug3kr Thanks for the comment, I learned a lot. And your exactly right, about it should be more time sailing, than working on them. I have accumulated 8 catamarans, and spend most of my time working on them. Soon though, I will start to sail them more. Also, I think it's a good idea, to be sailing with another person. I watched many of yours', with your wife. Last night, I watched one of Sam Houstons' videos. He sails alone, on a 28', this time, sailing in the Copenhagen region. But he did several videos, of sailing in the Keys. He also recently did one, where he sailed on a Hobie 16, with his girlfriend, from Miami, to near Freeport Bah. So he is fearless, but then he just left the boat there, and gave it to whoever wanted it. He seems much happier now, to be on his big boat.

I like to watch your videos. I'm in Oz and you both are just small boat sailors who go out and enjoy it with out the b.s.. You enjoy what you have. Just over 30 yrs ago I sailed a 22 footer up the Queensland, Australia coast and I can tell you it didn't have half the interior comfort of yours but that in No way lessens your achievements. So much fun with not much money. You're both fortunate that you enjoy it together though I suspect it takes work that you're both prepared to put into it. Fair winds to you both.

Would you mind doing a video on your GPS / instruments and tiller pilot? Looking at your c22 and am interested in how you have it all rigged up. Miodice3 .... I'm planning to do a stem-to-stern "virtual tour" video of the boat, once the weather cools down. It's just too miserably hot here right now. I'll get to it though, I promise! FWIW ... the autotiller is a Raymarine ST2000, pretty simple install with the mount on top of the coaming and the electrical connection located just below it. It does require the purchase of one 6" pushrod extension. I have to say it is the best money we ever spent, boat-wise. I recommend it very highly. The GPS is an older Garmin 740s with 7" display. It is very obsolete now, but continues to do everything we could possibly want, with minimal power consumption. If I were more tech-oriented, I could set it up to "talk" to the autotiller (or so I'm told) which would be awesome on long trips, but I've never gotten around to it. Hope this helps!

Most people would not enjoy sailing a C22 that far. The boat could certainly handle it, no question. It's all about the psyche of the skipper, though. Would he ENJOY it or not. Is he the type that's mentally wired for luxury motorhome camping, or would he prefer trekking through the Appalachians in the rain and snow, with a pup tent and a pocketknife? In general, I would advise against it ... unless the skipper knew his boat well enough to not need or want my advice. ;)

Thanks for the video, comments are great too. I'm interested in doing winter cruising here. Planned for a bigger boat but I guess I could follow your lead and use my San Juan 21 swing keel. A little faster than yours but not so nice down below. And very nice solar panel mounts. Two 30 watters is a nice size for that boat. Does your outboard have a generator?

@geneneill530
@geneneill530 6 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new C22!! Yes, we live in central Florida, about an hour and a half north of Orlando. The trip itself was practically free. We spent a fair amount fixing the boat up, but now a week-long cruise costs us no more than the gas it takes to haul the boat to the launching ramp and back ... plus a couple gallons that we use in the outboard ... and the food we would have eaten anyway. Less than one night in an average hotel on some overcrowded beach. TOTALLY worth it. ;)

What was the shallowest water you encountered? Were the depths on the charts accurate?
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 5 жыл бұрын
I can't recall what the shallowest water was, but the charts in the area are quite good. One notable exception is the channel into the nice anchorage between White Horse Key and Gullivan Key. If you choose to anchor in there, hug the point of the beach on White Horse very close as you enter and exit. The channel is within spitting distance from the sand. The charted channel will put you aground on the beach.

What size/type/brand engine are you running? What's your cruise speed under motor? Is this a Catalina 22 MKII?
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 6 жыл бұрын
The motor is a 2014 Tohatsu Sailpro 6, long shaft. Top speed in flat calm water is close to 6 knots, but we generally cruise at about 5, to save fuel. That last knot just about doubles fuel consumption. Daydream is an '88 "New Design" C22, not a MkII. The MkII is roomier with 6" more beam, but the New Design is (in my humble opinion) much more livable, largely due to her built-in sink, stove and garbage can. Also, MkII's are devoid of any exterior teak. This can be a good thing or bad, depending on personal preference.
