Love to see some good modern books coming out on this topic! Do you think you might be able to recommend some older books on this topic that could be used to demonstrate the way that early lutheranism understood this topic?

I could do a separate video on that topic. There are a lot of great resources in our history.

Christian Character Formation is a great book to read after winning the lottery. $39.82 for a 272 page book. I read "Hands of Faith". It's a good book, worth reading.

Luther taught SOLA Scriptura. Sola Scriptura in practice means SOLA (my private interpretation of ) Scripture + my assumptions about everything. The Bible does not teach anywhere the human doctrine that "the Bible is the sole and sufficient infallible authority for the man of God" since every proud man will always boast 2 Peter 3:16 was not written for him/her. Martin Luther could see what is the fruit of unbiblical Scripture ALONE: "There are nowadays almost as many sects and creeds as there are heads" Martin Luther. Neither the Church Fathers, nor Jesus nor Paul ever taught Sola Fide as Luther taught it : " I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned" John 15:1-6 "Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off." Rom. 11:22 Catholics know that salvation is the free gift of God and that even our "good works" ( no one is good except God alone, then good works are gifts) are the fruit of God's grace working within us. Catholics know it is grace from first to last!!! Luther got it wrong.

Jesus, Paul, and John teaches faith alone (justifying faith): Luke 24:25-27, 24:44-48; John 5:39, 14:6; Rom 1:16, 3:24, 3:28, 4:16; Gal 3:10-14; Eph 2:8-9; John 3:16; Titus 2:11, 3:4-5. Church Fathers teach faith alone - Ambrose writes to Irenaeus: Furthermore, the world was subject to God by the Law because, according to the command of the Law, all are indicted. And yet, by the works of the Law, no one is justified. For, by the Law, sin is perceived, but guilt is not taken away. The Law, which declared all people sinners, seemed to have done harm. But when the Lord Jesus Christ came, He forgave to all people the sin, which no one could avoid. And, by the shedding of His own blood, He blotted out the handwriting that was against us. This is what he says in Romans 5:20, “The law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” Because after the whole world became subject, Christ took away the sin of the whole world, as John testified, saying in John 1:29, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” And for this reason let no one boast about works, because no one is justified by his deeds. But he who is righteous has righteousness given to him because he was justified from the washing of Baptism. Faith, therefore, is that which frees through the blood of Christ, because he is blessed “whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered” (Psalm 32:1). Augustine writes against the Pelagians: The righteousness of the Law-that he who has fulfilled the Law shall live in it-is set forth for this reason: when anyone has recognized his weakness he may attain and do the Law and live in it, reconciling the Justifier not by his own strength nor by the letter of the Law itself (which cannot be done), but by faith. In a justified person, there is no right work by which he who does that work may live. But justification is received by faith.

@@shogunshogun , Paul was very clear: "if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." 1 Cor. 13:2. Catholics agree we receive justification by faith, faith in the love of God. If we believe God is love, then we are able to surrender completely to God and God does the good works ( No one is good but God alone). It is not the same Luther's "faith alone" that Abraham's faith alone that Augustine's faith alone. Luther conflated "works of the law", works of the Torah and the free gift of God’s love that has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Martin Luther could not resort to any early church father to back his brand new 16 th century "SOLA fide", that is why had to resort to his SOLA (private interpretation of ) Scripture. Saint Augustine was a faithful Catholic, he taught: "It can be said that God's commandments pertain to faith alone, if it is not dead (faith), but rather understood as that live faith, which works through love" De Fide et Operibus. A Protestant scholar, Oxford professor Alister McGrath wrote: "It is quiete possible that Martin Luther may have confused one theological opinion with the official teaching of the church and initiated his program of reform on the basis of this misunderstanding". Luther's "sola Scriptura" produced Luther's "sola fide". Charles Taze Rusell's "Sola Scriptura" produced W.J' Witnesses, etc, etc Paul teaches justification is received by faith, but by Abraham's faith ( Rom. 4:18-30) not by Luther's sola fide. Big difference. God bless you always

@@Alfredo8059 Scripture and the church fathers tells us that your assertion is false in your first post and as well as your second post in which I cited scripture and the church fathers. Again your assertions are refuted. But to go on ... 1 Cor.13:2 doesn't negate forensic justification nor do other passages which do not talk about saving faith, but other aspect of faith such as knowledge or charismatic faith. Moreover, Paul is comparing different gifts of the Holy Spirit. Scripture uses faith (pistis) in different ways. Here, Paul is not talking about saving faith like in Ephesians 2:1-10 or 1 For. 1:21, but he is talking about charismatic faith that moves mountains or other such miracles. It is not Luther nor the Lutherans that conflate the Law with the Gospel. Rather, the RCC conflates justification and sanctification. Thus, both doctrines are muddied, and not distinguished or taught in their truth and purity. We can see this by RCC condemnation for the teaching of Justification. For example, Trent gives out many anathemas to those who say that men are righteous before God through the righteousness of Christ, or that they are justified by grace alone through the favour of God, who forgives sins for Christ sake. Also, your very words are an example to this conflation of the Law and the Gospel. For you and RCs, Justification by faith in the love of God plus our own love = Semi-Pelagian. Scripture teaches us that there is a distinction between Justification and Sanctification, between the Law and the Gospel, between our duties and God's free promise in Christ. The bible tells us that in Justification people cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works. People are freely justified for Christ’s sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor and that their sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake. By His death, Christ made satisfaction for our sins. God counts this faith for righteousness in His sight (Romans 3 and 4 [3:21-26; 4:5]. Justification is God's work alone. after we are justified for Christ's sake, we are sanctified. Here as redeemed and converted sinners, we can cooperate with the help and power of the Holy Spirit to produce good works, but these works don't save us or keep us in the faith--God alone saves us from start to eternity (divine monergism). In sanctification, the focus and foundation is not us, but the Holy Spirit, without whom we cannot do good works that are acceptable or pleasing to God. God doesn't need our works of love, but our neighbour does. Yes, Augustine is right that if one's faith is living then it is bound to bear good fruit, a la James. James is talking about dead faith vs living faith. Not about justification--although they are very close to one another. For the Law cannot be performed until the Holy Spirit is received through faith in God's gracious work in Christ and His saving work on the cross. A dead man cannot tell you if he wants two sugars and a dash of milk in his coffee. But a living man can. We were born spiritually dead and under God's wrath, but we have become spiritual alive through faith alone by God's grace alone as a gift of God, not our works, in Christ alone. Paul teaches in Romans 4 against RCC doctrine of Justification and what you falsely assert. Faith in God's promise not works of the Law makes one righteous like faithful Abraham believed that God is able to carry his promise--not demand, i.e. Law. God bless you brother and enlighten you with His Holy Spirit that you are led by Him in the knowledge, faith, hope, and love in Christ and His saving work for all sinners--you and me included--unto life everlasting in His kingdom of glory in the new heavens and the new earth.

@@shogunshogun , with all due respect, your speech shows you indulge in wholy trivial, vague and often directly nonsensical notions about Catholic justification. You surely have learned many misunderstandings, misrepresentations and caricatures. The Catholic Church tells us that in Justification people cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, for Catholics that is pelagianism. We totally reject semi-pelagianism, too. Even Luther ( the first Protestant) ignored the official teaching of the Church. Here you are what a Protestant scholar, Oxford professor has to say: " It is quite possible that Martin Luther may have confused one theological opinion with the official teaching of the church and initiated his program of reform on the basis of this misunderstanding "Biography of John Calvin", p.11. Catholics know that salvation is the free gift of God and that even our "good works" (no one is good except God alone) are the fruit of God's grace from first to last! Our free will is weakened and diminished by Adam's fall (Council of Orange), free will is yet no destroyed (Trent). We cannot accept we are robots as Luther/Calvin thought. God is true, the blood of Christ justifies and sanctifies. There is not justification without sanctification. God counts faith for righteousness in His sight, Paul tells Abraham's faith justifies, Abraham did not believe in "atonement alone" as Luther taught. Context reveals that St. Paul was talking about the initial grace of salvation or justification by which we are raised from death unto life. The construction of the Greek text of Ephesians 2:8-9 makes clear that both grace and faith are entirely unmerited. Many Protestants are shocked to discover this is precisely what the Catholic Church teaches-and baptizes babies to prove it. How much more can the Church do to demonstrate this truth? What kind of works could a newborn baby have done to merit anything? However, once that baby grows up and reaches the age of accountability, he must begin to “work out [his] own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in [him], both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Phil 2:12-13). Or, as Paul says in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Are we justified or saved by faith, according to Jesus? Certainly! But by faith alone that would exclude works in every sense? No way. In John 11:25, we read: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” That is faith. Yet, in Matthew 19:17-19, Jesus declared: “. . . If you would enter life, keep the commandments . . . You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” That is works. In Matthew 12:37, Jesus puts any thought of justification by faith alone to rest: “. . . for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Jesus is infallible, Luther was not. God bless you
