keyleth and the lava, one of the very few times matt looked really upset at a dice roll
@nervesconcord3 жыл бұрын
Tbf it was kind of self-inflicted, if you have a 10ft run up before your jump you can make a distance equal to your strength score in feet without needing a roll. Even with the standing jump rules you can still leap a distance of half your strength score without needing to roll a check, so at this point Keyleth would have had a 7ft/14ft jump distance.
@TheTibiacalmera3 жыл бұрын
@@nervesconcord but adding a check to it made that battle feel so much more intense and actually cool. Probably one of the best battles of CR.
@nervesconcord3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTibiacalmera You realise they came very close to a TPK here, and if that had happened we would be looking back at this clip and talking about how a missed rule lead to the premature end of Vox Machina which would have been a sucky way for it to end. Honestly I think Matt may have had a brief foray into fudged dice roll territory here.
@TheTibiacalmera3 жыл бұрын
@@nervesconcord yet it was very fun and exciting, even for the players. Failure can create very intense feelings of things going wrong, which is great for a RPGAME. Also the DM has freedom to make any rules they want to enhance gameplay and narrative and that could've been Matt's choice, which overrules the D&D rules. Furthermore, if you look at it realistically, the requisite of rolling for that jump (and the natural one itself) actually makes alot of sense, since they were fighting an ancient red dragon right before the green dragon, so they would've been exhausted. Matt's decision to force that roll was genius and the results were very, very powerful from a narrative standpoint.
@MrDe1mos3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTibiacalmera I'm sure he just forgot the rule, which is completely forgivable for any DM. But it's kind of making me sad how you are advocating Matt, just because he is such a star in a world of D&D, I guess. Realistically, I can make almost a 6 feet step with a slight push and I'm exactly 6 feet tall. I don't see how can I fail this jump, unless I can't keep myself on my legs. And if that's the case, I won't be trying. So I see it like a lame call. And again. I'm certain Mercer just forgot the rule. "Asking for a check for usual action, when 2 party members are down, is genius" - brr, it terrifies me imagining you as a DM.

Get yo-self some new dice. Sometimes they are badly mis-weighted. I have a dice that defaults to crits more than any other roll. After realising that, I tested all my dice, tallying the results of hundreds of rolls and seeing if they float in water because of hidden air pockets, etc. Whenever I am DMing, I am sure to use the dice that was the most balanced in all tests. Obviously you can just use Google dice or an app instead to prevent that... a lot quicker than rolling dice a couple of hundred times.

You can tell that the lava clip was old from the lack of singing after Marisha said "..make my way over".

It's so weird to hear 2017 given as an example of a bad year

I'm pretty sure if you were to fall into a river of molten lava you wouldn't actually sink, the liquid rock being heavier than you. You'd most likely float on the surface easily.

Travis: “2 shit throws in a row, can’t get any fuckin’ worse.” Little did he know that it could, in fact, get worse.

I thought, at first, you could cast Feather Fall on the chicken to give yourself a better shot. But Feather Fall has to be cast on a Creature. So, when the servant throws the chicken, you first have to cast Animate Dead. THEN you can cast Feather Fall, and it will be a much easier target!

Five most memorable nat 1's and Travis should have 3 of those with his throwing contest

My group didn't use "critical fumbles" so much as it was "if you roll a 1 funny things are going to happen". This eventually mutated into someone throwing their weapon. Then they roll a d8 for direction, and it goes 1d4 squares in that direction with the rule that if someone is in that direction it's an automatic hit and they roll just to see if they accidentally crit. Campaign "mid point" PC's have solved a major puzzle, gotten guidance from a goddess, amassed an army and charged a giant hive of monsters. The army buys them time to infiltrate. They sneak by the guards, and work their way to the stairs going down. A fight breaks out. Inquisitor goes first, charges... nat 1, throws his glaive off the stairs and cringes as he sees it go but doesn't hear the sound as the temple is deep. NPC bard that they all adore starts singing. Fighter charges in with his great sword, rolls a 1, rolls D8, rolls his D4, his great sword goes flying directly into the bard, he rolls, nat 20, confirms, rolls max possible damage. 1st round of combat 2 nat 1's, 1 dead beloved NPC. That dungeon was hilarious. Note, this method of nat 1's was mostly my players idea as I usually just gave some fluff as to how they failed and maybe granted an aoo or something. The inquisitor actually killed a boss during the campaign by accidentally throwing his glaive into the boss.

Ah- memorable Nat 1s.... Mine was when Avery (my Rouge) tried to sneakily open a door to get out of someone's house before he noticed us... Nat 1 and I pushed a pull door so hard I put my fuckin' elbow through it. Needless to say- I was spotted.
