On May 19, 1870, Black Baltimoreans hosted the largest celebration of the ratification of the 15th Amendment in the country. 20,000 people paraded around the city and ended at the Battle Monument to hear the addresses of luminaries like Frederick Douglass, Isaac Myers, and Hiram Revels. Join us today to learn about the celebration here and the national fight for Black male suffrage. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another video!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and KZfaq channel.

This is something that needs to be taught in the classrooms around the Nation once more! It's so vital to learn how our nation has evolved and yet backslid on these Amendments.

@@kcailly1 so, what exactly are you trying to say? Please don't tell me you're trying to infer that Black People should not have rights, because I will report/block you!

There's lots of irony in this video given where we are today.

Yep. It's rather sad. It's also sad I didn't know about this (I knew about the 15th, but had no idea of this celebration or the local connections). I bet the schoolkids here in Baltimore City don't know about this either. After all, all they are taught is that the US was founded on Slavery and racial grievances for things that ended 150 or 160 years ago are constantly pushed. That is, when they learn anything, which BCS is not good at.

@@remo27 America was founded on slavery and racism. The constitution literally protected slavery and it is discussed during formation of the nation and in founding father's documents. You can literally read the founding father's thoughts on race. You people are delusional....

@@kcailly1 Ahh yes, the same founders who often were either anti-slavery or thought it would die out, naturally, which it was slowly but surely doing even by the time of the Civil War. From the very beginning , the "Northern States" were more populous and tended not to have slavery, I don't think you have an explanation for that. Slavery was protected by the Constitution as a form of PROPERTY RIGHT, clearly, it was subservient to Enlightenment Ideas of Private Property. Slavery is mentioned no where in the Declaration of Independence, so you are delusional.

@@remo27 You are equivocating. Only some of them were antislavery and capitulated to allowing slavery to be protected in the constitution because they had other interests that outweighed their antislavery beliefs. And that's a lie the north didn't tend to have slaves. There were slaves throughout the north and they were dependent on slave labor in the south. There were lots of sympathizers in the north, especially border states. Black people were not considered human beings at the time according to prominent enlightenment figures. You're just saying anything.

@@kcailly1 : The other interests, that 'outweighed' their anti slavery beliefs was independence from Great Britain and forming a union of the British colonies. In a war, you often take the allies you have, not the allies you want. As for the rest of your ridiculous spiel no, the north was not 'dependent' on slave labor from the south. The north was always the more prosperous part of the country. As for slaves 'all over' the North, they could only be slaves in States that allowed it, and the vast majority of Northern States did not allow slavery. How you could be so ignorant and think you have a point is beyond me.

Wonderful episode as always. History shows the Democrats were the original slave owners and Republications at time were leading the charge for slavery freedom. Have things really changed; with dependence on the Government is that not the same?

@@kcailly1 Democrats who switched to Republican did so as they also became increasingly less racist. The Republican Party has never championed slavery or Jim Crow laws; the Democratic Party did.
