Join us at the intersection of E Lombard and Horseradish Lane as we celebrate Baltimore’s Corned Beef Row! This historic corridor used to be a bustling Jewish marketplace where you could find buckets of fish and wooden crates filled with live chickens…and it is still home to delicious corned beef sandwiches! In this Five Minute Histories video, we focus on two family-owned companies still in business today: Tulkoff’s Horseradish and Attman’s Deli!

When I worked downtown this was our favorite place to go, I remember the love chickens in the crates on the sidewalks & I enjoyed picking my own half done pickle out of the barrel. Yes, I still eat the pickle with my sandwich.

My dad took me here all the time as a kid- I loved picking my own pickle out of the barrel. We always shared the same thing- hot corned beef on rye with mustard, hot dog wrapped in bologna, Utz chips, big dill pickle and a root beer- the best! The people that work there are awesome and kind of remind me of Seinfeld's "no soup for you" episode as they will yell at you if you place your order with one sandwich maker and then try to order more from another sandwich maker- only speak to your sandwich maker!! lol Don't be intimidated by the long lines in that tight space- they are long but move fast and that is what makes the experience fun and authentic. It's one place in the city where all walks of life intertwine and get along: corned beef sammies unite us all!

Do you remember grabbing the pickle out of the barrel with a bare hand before the health dept realized that was a bad idea? Fond memories from many years ago! Love that place!

Went there many times with my dad. A visit included bread from Stones Bakery and, of course, Attmans corned beef sandwiches. None better! Fond memories.

I miss the delicious corned beef sandwiches from Attman's! (I live in SW Louisiana now, and I haven't been able to find any place like that around here.)

You should have seen the old Tulkoff manufacturing entering through a large door in an alley. I am in printing, and once interviewed for a job in their print shop where they printed all their own labels. The shop and main office were on a sturdy wooden loft above the horseradish manufacturing. They do make delicious stuff.

For many years there was a tiny stall in Lexington Market with 2 old guys who sold only 2 products. They would grind horseradish and coconut while you watched. The horseradish would go into the brine and be jarred up. The coconut went into small brown bags. My Mother sent me to the market on the subway or on break from grad school whenever she wanted to make a coconut cake.

Amazing how many more stores there were back then. I first went to Jack's back in the mid 70's and it was nothing like that.

I was a fan of Jack's Corn Beef. Lenny's took over but they since closed. Is any restaurant operating now on the site? Thank you.

if I am correct the town of warren was flooded out when lock Raven dam was built putting the town under water

@@beardandfriends8227 look for the book What Lies Beneath by Ann Royston Blouse and Cynthia Schafer Mann, all about the towns that were flooded for the Baltimore water supply

Why these corned beef stores are not out in the counties and more around the city I cant understand. This beats burgers and pizza any day of the week.

Lenny's is in baltimore County on Reisterstown road but Attmans is the best.

I remember when there was quite a bit more to "Corned Beef Row". I also remember when much of the block was burned by rioters in 1968 following MLK's death. I am suprised that you left out such a dramatic part if the history.

Actually only one store burned--that's why there's an empty space next to Attman's. The other stores survived with relatively minor damage.

I learned about the pickles from a deli in NW Baltimore called Mandel's. I have a jar in my fridge now to make sure I have extras when I get Kosher hotdogs.
