Join us today at Monumental Lodge No. 3 of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW). This national organization got started in 1898 in Ohio because the older Elks organization, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, was a whites-only fraternal organization. In 1900, Monumental Lodge No. 3 was founded in Baltimore. One of the main focuses of its members was fighting for Black Civil Rights in this city and on the national level. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another Five Minute Histories video.
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and KZfaq channel.

I knew people who were members of this fine organization and I'm proud of what they stood for then and still stand for.

What the Us Supreme Court didn't like about laws like the West Ordinance was not the racial discrimination aspect but the fact that they prevented property owners from selling to the highest bidder.
