Mine would be no bigger than a 24m at waterline mass production yacht . I saw a 2019 Pearl 80 and a 2020 Sunseeker 76 the other day . Both of which I thought was at a great price. I have bought my 1st boat ( a 5m Brig ) Which could possible be the tender .

I think the new expedition conversion from Maugham is pretty good. I would always prefer a converted Coast Guard, Fisheries, Naval or offshore supply vessel , or an offshore salvage tug to a new expedition yacht because those really go everywhere and survive the worst of weather.

David as you are an Icon of this industry, you can certainly appreciate that a larger yacht builder can perhaps more easily help future owners recycle a boat used in a former life as an offshore resupply boat can be transformed into a beautiful vessel such as that of Ragnar. Smaller brands may be able to do this as well, but I feel that a bigger brand would have an easier time in such an operation as this. Thanks for all your wonderful work. (:

This is another great video, lots of good points are made and I agree 100% on buying one of the top brands out there. I own a Searay boat in Chicago because I know it's a quality boat and that when it's time to sell people will recognize the brand and the quality that comes with it.

I would add well and long established brands. There are a number of smaller companies that have been around for years or decades that make great production or one off boats.

I'm buying a yacht to go-anywhere on earth in great luxury and with relative economy. I neither intend to use it to party in a marina nor to punish myself with asceticism on long voyages. I need something like the 'Spirit of Venice' or Sunday Morning' for economy sailing with my children and employing minimal crew. Anything under 90ft is too cramped, anything over 90ft is too unwieldy. I initially wanted an aluminium hull, a centerboard or swivel keel, a Bermuda ketchnrif (even though Gaffs are sturdier and low maintenance and schooners are much faster windward), twin engines, twin screws and twin rudders, but I'm now willing to sacrifice on the engines and screws because the larger ones, like Zanzibar, have aged into pure junk and there aren't any good ones available. I don't want to waste money on a new and untried one. The Garcia 60 Exploration is still a little cramped for me. I then need another one that can carry a helicopter and a submarine, like the Odyssey/Alucia and T6 to pursue expeditions into the Arctic and Antarctic. I plan to mostly use the smaller one and charter the larger one.

I haven't seen a yacht yet that I truly like. It bothers me how shitty the living situation for the crew is on every vessel I've seen. These people are top notch professional 5 to 7 star service providers caring for mega million dollar rich boy toys and they get treated like peasants and shoved into steerage. All that luxurious space, most of which doesn't actually get used it's just there to make the boat bigger for the cock measuring contest, yet the team is literally stacked on top of each other in broom closets.

Even though most trimarans are based on my concepts from 2003, including the Adastra and the Independence Class, and even though I believe trimarans are the future, the manufacturing and testing hasn't, yet, evolved to a point for me to have faith in them. Likewise, even though the Functional Power Boat designs based on Dashew's work are fast, practical and economical, they haven't, yet, been storm-tested for me to trust them to go anywhere in all weather. I want a 90ft aluminium hull, sailing ketch with a centerboard or swivel keel---the Spirit of Venice( a luxury yacht from the designer who designs the Puffin junk, but good centerboards) or Sunday Morning (Palmer Johnson), another 80's or 90's ketch from a French shipyard, or a new hull from KM yachts. Peri Navi, tragically, doesn't do centerboards, whereas nobody else makes luxury sailing yachts any longer because people generally buy catamarans. The era of luxury sailing yachts has been over for almost 3 decades.

As for expedition yachts, the San Lorenzo Exp 500 doesn't have a hangar for an onboard helicopter, so, if I find the money, I'll buy the Odyssey/Alucia, or, else, I'll settle for the T6, Ithasca, or Seawolf. I'll never be able to extensively operate the Andromeda, Ulysses, Octopus, or even the Planet 9 because of very high recurring operating expenses. Even though I want an aluminum sailing yacht, I want a steel expedition yacht with twin engines, screes, rudders and very goad life boats because aluminum won't survive the abuse, the high-speed impacts, and the large corroding electric currents. I want a sparingly used sailing yacht snd another sparingly used expedition yacht that have travelled all over the world in all kinds of weather, so I can trust the design and manufacuring/build, but used sparingly and with care, so I can trust the hull and the systems in their existing condition without risking flawed repairs. Converted naval vessels have the best build quality, whereas converted fisheries and coast guards vessels and salvage tugs are very extensively tested and proven in all kinds of weather. Offshore supply vessels are, again, practical and thoroughly tested eith massive aft/stern decks that can be reconfigured as hangars or pools etc. There are no mid-sized X-bow vessels, so I have to settle for the traditional flared-bow ones with most of the superstructure, preferably in the center of the vessel. I like Alberto Pinto's interiors and those by a British female designer, who has also done the interiors for a major car brand. I also like rhe classy, yet, practical San Lorenzo and Peri Navi interiors. A yacht has the naval architecture drawn by one architect, the layout by another, and the interior, in some instances, by a separate interior designer. All the old Dutch firms, the Vripack team, and a few Italian firms are the most reliable super yacht designer and builders.Aluminum sailing yachts are mostly French or KM.

First, I would like to thank you from all of the Dreamers out there. Some of us may end up yacht owners. I, personally, have been looking to buy for some time. My first choice, right now, would be from the Ulstein Group.

Have my eyes I set on a Y9 (just about the right size for me)... Y Yachts might not be a "big brand" but they do a lot of things very well! This said, my list in terms of sailing yachts goes a bit like this: Up to 24m LWL -> Y Yachts, Swan, Oyster Up to 40m LWL -> Southern Winds, Wally, Swan Above 40m LWL -> Royal Huisman, Vitters, Perini Navi Not a fan of cats so didn't list Sunreef (doing a great job in this category) here...

Apart from space, size, features ETC, I always look for range. There's a lot of choices available, but why do many of them have such pathetic range? I'd expect at least trans Atlantic capabilites.
@jacobyrassilon
@jacobyrassilon 5 ай бұрын
Usually bigger the boat, bigger the range...at slower speeds, ofc. The long range boats usually have full displacement steel hulls and bigger fuel tanks.....but kind of creep along at 8-12 knots. There are exceptions to all things, but that's usually where you get the most range.

You weren't just scraping the barrel a little with point 5, you were contradicting point 4 and arguing the exact opposite of reality. As you say, new and innovative technology is expensive to develop, which is why it is usually the exclusive prerogative of bigger brands. Smaller brands can rarely afford to develop their own technology, so must rely on third party suppliers, who are themselves usually in the same boat regarding development of new technology. That is why most boats use the same standard equipment from a small number of large brand suppliers - so in the real world, smaller brands' boats are easier to service than boats from bigger brands because they don't have bespoke equipment. When did you last see a superyacht that did NOT have a Volvo, Man or MTU engine ? Or a Cummins / Onan genset ? And as for finding it difficult to discern what equipment is fitted to a SUPERYACHT - what utter nonsense ! Each piece of equipment fitted to a superyacht will have more paperwork than you could ever read in a lifetime to ensure proper installation, use, maintenance, conformity to class standards and reduction of legal liability. If it doesn't, then no reputable shipyard would touch it with someone else's 10 foot bargepole. If you don't know what equipment is fitted to your SUPERYACHT, then you need to fire your captain and engineer and hire people who can do thier job properly... or just people who can read.

Buy? Anything from Northern Europe that's slow and tough. Avoid? Speedy boats. They may look sleek but I wouldn't touch one. They will cost a fortune, the tech will be out of date before it even splashes.

feadship. as big as can be reasonably owner-operated by a skilled couple. but lets be honest - in most circumstances a yacht is not an investment. it is a depreciating asset. that being said it offers many other than financial returns.
