Out of Red Bull, and possibly straight into Ferrari - Adrian Newey’s uncertain future is already having a MASSIVE impact on F1.
Ferrari is understood to be working hard to secure Newey’s services for when the outgoing Red Bull technical chief becomes available in early 2025, although it is not the only team interested.
Aided by his close friend and manager Eddie Jordan, Newey has secured an early Red Bull exit that would allow him to join another team in the first few months of 2025.
But where will he go and how will that impact the team he's leaving behind and the one he's joining?
0:00 Newey's early exit
1:06 Ferrari's going for it
2:27 Red Bull crumbling?
4:48 New superteam prospect
6:28 Williams wants a reunion
8:28 A fresh bout of Verstappen doubt

No Pierre Wache and his team are the full time developers of the 2022/2023 and 2024 car. Newey was parttime consultant and focused on the suspension, as he himself said in 2022… Pierre Watch was ON THE PODIUM at the car launch this season as well.. Newey wasn’t THE designer, Newey had already said that himself several times these last seasons! In 2021 Horner already said that they were reorganizing the team for the time Newey would leave, Newe6 was mentoring young engineers, Wache got promotion… RBR was prepared for Newey leaving. He is 65… he was only parttime at RBR cos he was also designing for the Ocean Race sailing boat and working on the DREAM TRACK CAR FOR RED BULL, THE RB17. His special project, the track car without any regulations or restrictions….his dream project. And Newey had worked on the Valkyrie next to RBR racing team.

We need to remember that RBR keeping Newey within the organization for so long wasn't, necessarily, to take advantage of his services, but to deny such services to other teams. We've seen this before. For instance, when McLaren recruited Gordon Murray, there was a big element of simply denying his services to a rival team. Murray had a TD type role, but most of the actual blueprints and calculations where done by people like Neil Oatley, Steve Nichols, and Bob Bell.

Redbull has never had a win without Newey. He’s the common denominator lol and the first domino to fall. There’s a reason RB were able to take wins in the Merc era. I can't see Williams being a serious option. Firstly because, well, they're not exactly going brilliantly right now. But also because he already worked with them for many years, and I'd imagine he wants to go somewhere new rather than try to relive past glories. Ferrari offers that. The other thing with Williams is that while they're a better and much more financially stable outfit now than they were a few years ago, turning them around and getting them back to the front is going to be a long-term project and Newey, at 65, probably isn't LOOKING for a long-term project.

Im fairly sure that Adrian would only join Ferrari now, or retire from F1 design completely. At 65 I don’t see any point in joining any other team now, - being so very near the end of Newey’s working life. I have Gordon Murray in mind being a few years older than Adrian but has stayed involved in Automotive design on his own terms.

bc - Ferrari are now locked up. McLaren are now locked up. Could you HONESTLY see him sucking up to LS - and Audi won't do anything for three years - that's why. If it's not R-B - then maybe he does a Hamilton and move when it's not fashionable.. Or, he quits.

@@CosmicSeeker69 That still doesn't make sense, if for whatever reason next season Redbull are not so dominant then I can why it would make sense considering new engine regulations for 26. But from a competitive/performance side of it until Redbull start to not win races I don't see a reason to leave the team.

One question I haven't seen answered is how does Ferrari make it work financially, given the cost cap? TD45 makes it much harder to bury a contract like he's rumored to be being offered, so they'd need to exempt his salary, thus meaning that one more big contract hits the cap.
@seashackf1
@seashackf1 11 күн бұрын
Just like at RB, he’d already be exempted. Three highest paid employees and the drivers are all exempt.
@salkdhfpoahergpoahre1534
@salkdhfpoahergpoahre1534 11 күн бұрын
@@seashackf1 Right, but that likely means that another high value contract can no longer be exempt. There was some speculation that RB's push to move him further from the F1 team was to allow them to exempt another salary, so having someone that's kind of only 'part time' eating up an exemption slot could prove to be costly
@seashackf1
@seashackf1 11 күн бұрын
@@salkdhfpoahergpoahre1534 you’re right, it would mean a previously exempted salary no longer is and counts toward the cap unless he replaces someone. Either way RB made his salary work and not restrict their dev costs, so I’m sure Ferrari can do the same.

I think the biggest effect will be on the driver market. Currently Red Bull have such car superiority that they can run with a second driver who would be bettered by half a dozen other drivers in equal machinery. The danger is that if Ferrari narrow the performance gap we could see Perez regularly being beaten into forth by the two Ferrari drivers. That would make the Constructors championship close, especially if the new powertrain has reliability issues. My guess is that Carlos will be looking increasingly attractive to combat the powerful driver line up at Ferrari. And in the unlikely event of Max leaving Carlos would be a great option to take over as lead driver.

As much as I would like to see Newey go to Ferrari, I also like the idea of Newey joining Williams. Finally there would be a close fight for the top spots instead of an unbeatable juggernaut, who wears red or red bull colours. And maybe Williams could slowly return to it's glory days. Doesn't sound too bad.

I think Williams is the more likely destination than Ferrari. It’s a lot closer to his home (at 65, I doubt he’ll be up for a full relocation) and I doubt he’ll want to walk from one tough situation with internal politics to another.

As a Ferrari fan, I really encourage the idea of Adrian reuniting with the Williams. Albono deserves to be at least a top 6 finisher, and with a Williams designed by Adrian, it's just a matter of time before Albono finds himself on the podium, on the top step even. Maybe Loggy can do something too with that calibre of a car, but who knows.

You never want a new driver at the same time as major regulation change. Always stagger them. Ive heard this said by many people over the years and it makes a lot of sense. That means Max should move for 2025 or 2027. I suspect the latter because he will surely get the 2025 title at red bull.

Renault are micro-managers, Merc and Audi are too corporate, he's been at the old McLaren, Haas doesn't have any facilities or the money to build anything that he designs. I would have put Williams on the "no chance" list as well but for ownership... that's a big deal. This would be a good move for Dollarton as well, raising the status of their team in the sport and it's value as surely their goal is to sell it off for a huge windfall after the next concorde agreement is signed.

RBR are naive if they think they don't need to be nervous about Newey leaving. Even if Newey had nothing to do with the 2024 car or cars of the recent past, RBR still benefited massively because Newey wasn't out there designing cars for another team, which meant RBR had less competition all this time.
