From what I have read the proper process is to cover the china in whole milk and then heat it with the plate covered in the milk for an hour before allowing it to cool down. Here is an excerpt: "You place your cracked piece in a pot and cover it with two cups of milk (or more if needed). Next, heat over low for an hour. Allow to cool in milk and then remove and rinse. Your piece, if the crack wasn't too far gone, should now have resealed itself!" The magic is supposed to be that the milk protein casein fills the crack and when heated it forms a natural plastic that seals the crack. I would just use glue but I think that the test must be done correctly before dismissing it outright.

This is technique that works for small cracks and glaze cracks. Place the piece in a pot with two cups of milk, or more if needed to cover the piece. Heat the milk on low, just barely simmering, for about an hour. Turn off the temperature and allow the milk to cool. Rinse the piece off. The milk should have bonded with the cracks to help seal them.

Michelle DeDeo, Ph. D. Have you tried this? Or know someone who has? I have a mug that was really cold when I put hot water in it, and it got a hairline crack that leaks the tiniest bit of water through it. Would this method fix it enough that I could still drink hot tea out of it? Also, I only have raw milk, is that ok? And I noticed you said enough milk to cover the piece, is that to cover the crack or the entire mug? Thanks!

I had asked my grandmother a couple years back. She said it works but afterwards the plate is only good for display. After you wash it a time or two the bond fails. The milk needs to be boiled and left overnight to cool.

Okay, so, yeah warm milk isn’t gonna fix your plates HOWEVER I think what the poster was trying to do was make casein plastic/galalith/erinoid which is where you curdle milk with vinegar and wash it in formaldehyde. Casein is a protein in milk which, once isolated and treated, will essentially act as a hard plastic. People used it for comb handles, telephone parts, light switches etc before the invention of plastic. You can get an approximation of a fix with warm milk if it’s tiny hairline fractures in true fine china, but not thick cheap shattered dishes. Hope this explains why this life “hack” exists!!

i mean these videos are almost always not real, @@gabyottich7020. they're just clickbait. And they sometimes put in real simple things like supercooled water (which is a real science experiment you can do) to add credibility, just long enough for you to hit like and share. That's how they get money, through popularity and ad revenue. They don't care if it's fake. All that matters is that you share it. And while it doesn't take away money from people that do, I still think it's bullshit behavior because it spreads pseudoscience and makes people more susceptible to things like snake oils

I was a little shocked myself when I fixed my plate this way! I used whole milk and added 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar. it binds to the fat molecules in the milk and helps prevent flaking as it hardens into the cracks. I saw mine on Pinterest, but ended up doing further research on how to actually do it bc we all know how pintrest is 😅

Caseine glue was well known in the Middle Ages to glue wood panels before securing them with metal straps ('pentures' in French, which translates as hinges I believe) and forged nails (doors, wooden chests...), and caseine is found in... milk. Not so long ago, people still used milk to glue paper stickers on bottles. I agree with some of the comments below: you should have tried with a tape resisting water, not masking tape which is completely useless on moist objects.

not that it works...but that is NOT bone china. The china you are looking for is different from the plate you purchased. Bone and porcelain china are very thin especially Bone which when held up to light you can see thru the plate or any pieces of of the set. Fine China does Not mean it's actually true high quality. Almost all porcelain and bone china are very THIN pieces and will have a series number on them. The statement "fine china" is a misleading statement making most think that it is in fact "TRUE CHINA". So this in fact would not work on the piece you used. Also the piece you used was in fact too thick to be real. (signed) owner of porcelain bone china Winterling Marktleuthan Bavaria set 32

I really just read through SO many comments to see if anyone mentioned the fact that the plate used in the original video is MILK GLASS and no one did. Yeah, that white and blue milky look on certain, older dishes, is actually called MILK glass and it only comes in white and blue or plain white and if you use boiled, whole milk it can/will actually fix the plate.

Try boiling the milk to activate the proteins to untangle then they rectangle as the milk cools. Also try taping across the brakes with a heat tolerate tape. Taping along the cracks blocks the milk getting in to them.

So I do agree that the video on Facebook makes it seem like a lot easier but I did this myself on a ceramic bowl I’m not sure if it was fine China or what but I actually didn’t warm the milk I didn’t know you were supposed to and you’re actually supposed to clean the edges of the place where it’s broken first and I went and checked it after less than 24 hours and half of the crack was already you couldn’t even see it so I had put it back in and it wasn’t like as good as new but it wasn’t completely in half anymore like your video had showed so I don’t know if it just depends on the type of ceramics or what because I saw another video where it Was two ladies and one of their cups seemed to improve and the plate did not so maybe cups and bowls work better I don’t know I just thought I’d share my experience

You can take a screenshot when watching that facebook video and you will see that they take out a different plate from the milk (the "healed" plate has damages the broken one didn't have and vice versa; the painting patterns are slightly shifted as well). Another vid on this said Hot milk and the length was two days. The milk has casseins that will form a sort of plastic. It may be it only works on the more porous ceramics such as the thicker ceramics that if cracked open are like baked plaster of paris inside, (the clay it is made out of) In a shtf, there will be no ceramic shop especially coming from China so that would be so cool if this worked or worked for you. Parameters that may have had an effect...the other used scotch tape I think, I am not sure what type of tape, it looked like paper on top, you used, the chemicals perhaps could have changed something. It was hard baked china maybe not very porous and it does not work well on this type. the other vid left the whole apparatus uncovered. Maybe loss of water or whatever helps it to work. And lastly, it may be the milk, I would opt for the least expensive milk to do this or when my organic milk was going into cassein mode already, lol. Or wait till I have a stack and blow the whole jug on a gluing project. The conventional milk is raised with gmo's which come with their own toxins and chemicals in the feed, even antibiotics can have an effect. Just saying...it is not the all natural milk our grandparents would have been using. I think it was the temp of the milk or the hard china. I really want to try this. I use many ceramics now and the thick ones and they break easy, if a shtf happens, I might have to resort to the Tupperware, chewed up plastic kiddie cups. I don't think there is any destroying those...lol. The earth could vaporize, and we just might and all that will be here in our place is a plastic Tupperware kiddie cup. lol

It's funny because I know that it won't work but I still watch the 9 minutes to see the procedure. I need a life.
