My Black & Decker drill decided to complete stop working and would not charge or function with the factory battery charger. I knew the battery had only a few cycles on it so it should be recoverable. The stock charger refuses to apply any charge if the cells are not at the correct level.
Here's an easy fix anyone can do just be careful.
I used this drill all day afterward at the capacity seems right back to 100%. Beats the heck out of throwing it away.

Thanks a lot you saved me $300 for new battery drill. Had this sitting in my shed for easily 10yrs. Last night hooked it up to my car battery charger for 10 mins to get it to read 10volts. The Charger normally goes red to green within a second. It happily charged both my batteries.

I watched a lot of battery repair videos and yours made the most sense. Jolting with over voltage does not make sense so the welder and in series batteries were out. Your video showed that the dead battery needs just regular charging voltage to put enough into the battery so that the charger will accept the battery. I do not have a variable power supply so I used a good 18V battery and connected them parallel. It only took about 30 seconds of parallel connection for the dead battery to come back to life. Thanks for posting!

I repacked my NiCD battery with lithium ion cells to kill the memory issues with the nicads. Might be a good idea to clip in a pulse charger in your circuit too as it can break up the memory wall issues when you have a multi-cell pack like that (battery 1 is dead and battery 2+ are all OK still).

mine stopped charging but i paid like 5 bucks for the drill and battery, and have a better one now, so i just took out the nicd cells, recovered the undercharged ones, and made a 12V pack for RC testing :)

A Real Comedian ! ! ! However, I found that I can buy a Schumacher DSR Proseries DSR127 8-Bank Battery Charger, 6/12V, 2-12 Amps for under $1000 and then run it in parallel with my NOCO Boost Max GB500 and using them together I can revive this battery for less than $3,500, but that's at todays prices.

I basically have a brand new 24v firestorm. Bought it brand new and it didn't last anytime before the batteries went dead. I'd love to get it going again because it still has a lot of use left in it, but I can't see spending the money to purchase new very expensive batteries.

I attempted to parallel connect two Milwaukee Li batteries but did not work. I connected a known good M28 to a V28 that had been in storage too long and wouldn’t take a charge. They did not balance out as it seems that the M28 has some type of internal protection that keeps it from being connected that way because each time I attempted it the indicator led’s on the good M28 would start flashing in some form of test pattern. I currently don’t have a volt meter so I’m flying blind but any tips would help. If I purchase a power supply, what type should I purchase and at what settings to try and bring this V28 battery back to life? Thanks!

Did something similar. I took the dead battery pack apart, then connected alligator clips to the positive and negative terminals of another fully charged battery, then I jumped the positive alligator clip to the dead battery terminal and tapped each individual battery with the negative clip till each one sparked. Reassembled the dead battery pack and placed it on a charger, started charging immediately. Works perfect and saved myself $40.00

What is a Bench Power Supply? And what is the best and cheapest way to 'ZAP' one of these questionable batteries? Will a Zap from a 6/12 V Car battery charger Work to awaken one these batteries up? I've got 2 -Ryobi 12v batteries that will take a charge but drain, without even being used within 12 hours. Or could my battery issue be a different problem where a Zap will not Work!

Buying a "bench power supply" can work WONDERS to just about any battery AND do a BUNCH of other things. So, go get one for about $75 and come back to KZfaq for some great battery "How To" vids on using it to stuff like this. It's worth it. ... OR ... buy a multicharger like the RC charger he showed, better value and does virtually any battery.

Don't do this for lithium ion! DELAYED FIRE HAZARD for Lithium Ion (LIon) batteries! The battery pack was shut down as a safety precaution because LIon batteries used to catch fire. Then someone figured out why, and manufacturers started adding safety circuits to keep that from happening. What you are doing fools the safety circuit, and can lead to the battery pack catching fire: - Once an individual (3V) cell gets below (IIRC) around 1.4V, the copper electrodes start to dissolve. - If the pack is then recharged, the copper will form nucleation sites where metal whiskers will begin to grow (by electroplating), inside the cell. - After some charge / discharge cycles, the metal whiskers will begin to short out the battery cells. - Shorts in the battery cells can get hot enough to ignite the battery. - Oops, left it on the carpet near the crib! LIon batteries hold a LOT of energy. They can catch fire and even explode, which will at least ruin any power tool they are in, and might start a house fire. Better to get a new battery, or replace the old cells. Avoid cheap, maybe jump-started discharged cells. New cells fix the problem.

An interesting concept going on here. The average person doesn't have a great deal of expensive electrical equipment sitting in their home to repair a cheap drill battery. Cost of equipment versus cost of cheap drill battery. The answer is obvious, buy the equipment and if the battery ever goes dead again, you're all set to repair it again. Why would the average person not want to have all the fancy equipment not sitting there. After all a drill just pokes holes.
